That long contract that Ovechkin has nurtured complacency in him. Why does he have to try 110% every night when he is guaranteed all the money he'll ever need?!? He had the long contract even when he was scoring a big amount of goals. Many players have long contracts. Some of the problems Ovie is dealing with our change. - 3 different coaches in 18 months - 3 different systems - LW to RW - New line mates. Some games playing with Beagle and Crabb other games Backstom and Brower and other games Ribero and Wokolski. - Playing a hard power forward style that is burning him out. Kane will have a hard time as he gets older as well. Power forwards like Kane, Ovie and others have a hard time playing at that level for along time. Ovie will score but you will probably see in the 30-40 goal range. Goal scoring is down in the NHL. only 4 players last year hit 40 goals. Ovie actually finished 5th in scoring last year.

I don't mean to be playing Devil's Advocate, but what's your source on this? That is, where did you see the rumour? Eklund? www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/The-Great-8-Rumors-Could-they-move-him-Would-they-Should-they/1/49006#.UQ8692cSNcoThe Great 8 Rumors? Could they move him? Would they? Should they? February 3, 2013, 12:27 PM ET It is almost unthinkable. He "is" the Washington Capitals. But over the last week or so we have seen that even Alex Ovechkin can be the subject to trade rumors. Get off to a slow start under a new coach and before you know it, they are shipping you off to Winnipeg. If I have learned anything in my time doing this it is anything, and I mean ANYTHING, can happen. Sure, there are definitely some things that you would never expect to happen, and probably won't. .But to think anyone outside the situation knows all the factors would be foolish. . It sure doesn't feel like the Caps would move their franchise player. Consider this: When Ovechkin came out and said he would be playing in the next Olympics in Russia even if the NHLers weren't Caps owner Ted Leonsis surprisingly backed Ovechkin and said he would allow him to leave the team mid-season to do it! Leonsis and AO are just that close. But the rumors are out there, and not just on the Internet. Even some scouts are talking about it in media cafeterias before games. One scout said to me, "Well, you can be sure they aren't shopping him, but you can also be sure other teams are going to come and kick the tires when they see weakness in the Caps game." The main team that seems associated with these rumors around the NHL is the Jets.So we can debate whether or not the Capitals could trade Alexander Ovechkin but SHOULD they? In my opinion, they should not unless there is something else going on something behind-the-scenes that we don't know about. You will simply never get fair value for player like Ovechkin, especially in a down season. What do you think?

There is no way Washington trades him with in the division. I guess though they could bank on us getting moved to the west and he is completely out of the East?
Still do not want him!

Oh for the love of God! Ovi is terrible, he has a terrible contract, and his skills are going down hill. I don't want him.

Not a huge fan but he's an elite talent.
Would not give up Kane though. Just about anything else I would.

I think Ovi is the ultimate "buy-low" player right now.
That being said, it doesn't mean I want him on our team.
That being said, I can see him easily having four or five more 40 goal seasons in his tank. Hmm...
Boy would it be weird seeing him in any jersey other than a Caps/Rooski one. He's one of those players I love to hate.

I don't want him. lol Okay you might not personally like him but to say he is terrible is a joke. Last 5 years in NHL 2011-12 5th in goal scoring 2010-11 15th finished 7th in points. 2009-10 3rd finished 2nd in points. 2008-09 1st finished 2nd in points 2007-08 1st finished 1st in points. Only Stamkos has scored more goals in the last few years.

Ovie is a superstar whose needs to be rejuvenated.
A move out of Washington will do just that.
I would most certainly give up Kane for Ovie - but not anything over that.

Alex Ovechkin:
Contract length: 13 years Value: $124,000,000 Annual cap hit: $9,538,462 until 2020-21. Clauses: NTC (starting July 1, 2014, can list up to 10 teams each year he will not accept a trade to and can modify said list in September of every following year)
His contract is a rare escalating contract. The first six years were $9 million per but the last seven are $10 million per, starting in 2014-15.
Discuss this question: How good will Ovie have to be for that to be considered good value for the next eight years?
Benchmark: Sidney Crosby did a 12 year deal worth $104 million, annual cap hit of $8.7 million.

Seen this rumour a couple of times now. I believe the one place I saw it listed Kane, Scheif and a pick for him. Do we want him and at what price? No.

Before he came along how often did you see a Washington jersey? Almost none. Also if he was able to bring FA's here that is another value. For example Tomas Vokoun signed last year in Washington for 1.5 million because he thought they had a good chance to win. The year before he made 5.7 million. The next two years he took a lower salary 2 million per year to have the chance to win with Pittsburgh. Value is more than just on ice.
