Certain members were abusing it and making work for us. We had a choice to warn, suspend or ban the abusers, leave status quo or suspend it altogether. Since the Karma feature was only of value when it remained fun for everyone who truly cared about it, and it wasn't worth losing members over, putting an end to it for now made the most sense. How can you abuse the Karma function? I noticed that if I gave Todd karma inevitably it would somehow be changed and in fact he would go higher in the negative. At first I actually thought it was the mods removing my karma, but then a few weeks ago I figured out what was happening, had nothing to do with the mods. He was being smited, obviously a few others here figured out how you could still smite as well. I guess that is the abuse that Ric is talking about

I guess that is the abuse that Ric is talking about I remember you or someone else mentioning this a while ago, since it no longer matters how exactly were people exploiting the karma system to smite. I was going to ask when it was mentioned before, but decided not to becasue I figured it was best not to bring more attention to a exploitable bug in the karma system.

Two and a half pages of karma discussion? Imagine if this was the off season. We'd be rivaling the Coyotes relocation thread in a matter of days. Oy. I'm glad the Jets are playing tomorrow.
Speaking of which, don't forget to vote in the 'Who's going to win' poll thread I'll be posting shortly.

Your typing out an acknowledgement of bcmike's excellent post means less without the karma function? If that's how you interpret it....but, truly, I was trying to make a funny. In hindsight, I guess it wasn't much of a funny. Thanks for pointing that out. Karma for you.

I think you should warn those that were abusing it (myself included) and reinstate, if they abuse again, they get suspended.

Guys, we are planning to upgrade the forum to proboards v.5 in the near future - at least for a test drive. You will be happy or sad to know that the newer version does not support Karma, but it has many other interesting features (at least that is my understanding).
All I will say about Karma right now is that it is subject to abuses in a number of ways and that we have had members complaining about it and even quitting the forum over it. It does not really do what it is supposed to do -- that is, measure the quality of posting or popularity of a poster. It is subject to a number of abuses and the code fixes don't really address the underlying problems.
We do have the ability to turn it back on if that's what most of you want, but if we decide to move to the newer version of proboards that doesn't support Karma it'll be gone anyway.
