Watching yesterday's game, one thing stood out for me when I compared it to the Moose games I watched over the past few years:
In the AHL, you can often get away with making mistakes. In the NHL, they are absolutely merciless. They are vultures. You make a mistake, they're on it and you pay. I forgot what it was like to see that level of play live (and with my being emotionally invested in it).
Thoughts?

Of course there is a difference.
There really is no comparison between the AHL and the NHL and I hope the powers at be realize this.
Because we did get our ass handed to us last night.

Bad passes ain the skates turn out to be good passes as they are so good with their skate to stick skills. Also every shot towards the net is a rocket and everything is tipped.

The Jets paid dearly for their mistakes. The Habs pounced and finished. The Jets lack finish as we really have a top line of 2nd liners.
There is little room for error. The Jets PP is atrocious and Penalty kill average at best. We will not win many games playing the way we did yesterday on special teams.
Size, speed and skill are all up a notch from the A. Having watched Shea Webber and now Gill play the d-men can really shut guys down.

There certainly wasn't any difference between the reffing yesterday and the AHL playoffs last year.

I would definitely agree with those sentiments form thedeuce and jval. In regards to JimmyMann, I think any defenceman that shows that kind of shutdown skill in the A, won't be there too much longer.

To wit: eliminate two Oduya miscues and we have a very different game yesterday.
New game plan - make no mistakes, take full advantage of their mistakes. It couldn't be simpler! ;D

I disagree with the getting our asses handed to us. The scoreboard said 5-1, but 2 of those goals were when the game was already over and the 3rd goal was a result of horrific officiating. We controlled the game for most of the game. We even controlled the 2 give aways that result in easy goals. Ever single montreal goal was on a rush usually involving odd man defence. We made mistakes that cost us. Those mistakes were not from huge amounts of pressure. Montreal didnt create the mistakes, we handed it to them. We outshot Montreal by a pretty good number. I simply disagree we were outplayed.

Pavelec makes a few good saves and the game would've been different. True. I keep hearing how it's not on Pavalec because all the goals were on golden, point-blank chances. No doubt it would be unreasonable to expect him to stop all of them, but it's reasonable to think he'd pull one save out his ass on one of 'em. m.

WTF was with that brutal call on Byfuglien. That iced the game for the Habs.

I don't think you can blame Pavelec for those goals, however the great goalies will make that one extra save to keep his team in it. I think if he coulda made the save on the third goal, woulda been huge. jets had the momentum, and a bad call by the refs and resulting goal killed it. O well it's only game 1

I wonder if having Winnipeg-born officials was a good idea. Might they have felt they couldn't or shouldn't make a call because it would be perceived as biased?

This is why the Stanley Cup is so difficult to win.
We need to get a lot better if we are going to make the playoffs.
Montreal bloodied our nose, now we have to wipe off the blood and get better because Chicago is looking to do the same thing on Thursday.
