Anyone who thinks this team makes the playoffs is clearly too excited. They aren't going to finish top 4 clearly, and I can't see them winning a playoff round, but I certainly don't think it's ridiculous to think they could make the playoffs. I'm not saying I would bet a ton of money that they will, but they didn't miss by too much last year and they are a young team that should only improve each year. That alone says to me there is at least a shot at the playoffs. We're still missing vital pieces that essentially need to be added through the draft. We lack the veterans needed for a late push. We only make the playoffs provided that our team drastically over-performs and then it's unlikely they'd even win a game in a series against Washington or Pittsburgh. Not to mention our schedule and being stuck in a division with teams in the South-eastern United States. Making the playoffs would be a waste of a season, I think. We're better off finishing outside of the playoffs and getting another season of high draft picks to help fill the cupboard.

Not even win a game against Washington or Pittsburgh, really! Atlanta won 4 of six games they played against Washington last year.

Feel free to argue to the contrary, but this team won't get anything positive long-term out of finishing 8th in the Eastern Conference. Winnipeg has no pressure whatsoever to do well this year, and as far as I'm concerned there's a lot of positives in seeing development amongst our young players. I'm certainly not hoping we tank, but realistically our chances of winning the "Nail Yakupov Sweepstakes" by finishing dead last are higher then we are to make the playoffs. I'm actually very optimistic about our chances... three to five years from now, but "success" as far as I'm concerned this season is unrelated to whether or not we make the playoffs.

I think Phoenix may win the Nail Yakupov sweepstakes with the team they are putting on the ice this season.

You may be right on that point regarding Phoenix. Of course that could mean that Yakupov is putting on a Nordiques jersey next season instead of the Yotes' burgundy reds.
