Ducky loved Winnipeg but yes he and Murdoch did not get along so one had to go. I still have the Game Worn Rookie Jersey he gave me under glass with his rookie card.

If I was GM, Bob Murdoch would never have been hired, (I'd have gone with Ted Green who wanted the job,) and the negativity that plagued the Jets organization on Smith's watch would never have happened. Meaning, no I'd never have traded Dale.

Hawerhuk has gone on record saying he never had a problem with Winnipeg, the Jets organization (at the time) or the fans. But he had a huge problem with Mike Smith (who also backstabbed John Ferguson to get the GM's job). Would I have made the trade if I was the Jets owner? Nope. I'd have fired Smith lickety split.

I never liked this trade. Others say it was good for us as Teemu benefited from Housley setting him up and we also got Tkachuk. This may be true, but I still don't like this trade. I had the pleasure once of having a few beers with Selanne at the old Grapes on Main the year he injured his achiles. He was very open with me that Dale Hawechuk was the most talented player he ever played with a few years earlier in a Jet training camp after he was drafted by the Jets and before Teemu came to Winnipeg full time. He was really looking forward to playing with Ducky when he got to Winnipeg but alas, he was long gone to Buffalo by then. Can you even imagine a line of Hawerchuk and Selanne back then? Dale still had plenty left in the tank in the late 80's, unfortunately for us, Smith replacing Ferguson killed all hope of getting out of our conference. With Hawerchuk we were damn close though a few times. I sure would like to see him with the Jets again one day in some capacity.

It would have been nice to see Hawerchuk and Selanne on the Jets together back in the day. Even watching them together in this year's Heritage Classic alumni game at IGF makes one wonder about the possibilities and what could have been.
