Winnipeg should be up there around the same range of Edmonton and Ottawa. Both small cities with a huge hockey fanbase and the support that goes along with that. None of those cities will ever be a top money maker, but in today's NHL, they will make money and can pay players enough to be a contender in the League.

We were like 12th in revenue this year I think we are good. In a couple decades when they build a new rink, maybe they will put more than 15,000 seats in that rink, who knows. In the meantime Winnipeg will never be a top 5 income team, but they will be profitable and sell out every season. I don't think they will ever build a new rink. They are just getting the ball rolling on the multi-multi million dollar SHED! project downtown. This project has the MTS Centre as the anchor for all other development that will be popping up over the next 3-5 yrs or so.

A new rink is likely 25 - 30+ years away IMO. If there is a way to keep it downtown (where Portage Place is now?) that might be best. Who can predict that far in the future?

Ignorant person: "MTS Centre is not NHL calibre! And it's too small!"
- WE GET AN NHL TEAM -
Ignorant person: "Well... how can you make it bigger...?"
Seriously: Any MTS Centre "expansion" talk is a complete waste of time. But hey, proceed if you don't mind wasting your time.

but, Slippy is actually correct on this. the MTSC is NOT going to expand. EVER. so, to keep talking about IS a waste of time. the MTSC is the perfect size, a little cramped and the washrooms are awful, but it is perfect for our needs in terms of the NHL.

^ and a Karma point for you mcguire4 for "getting it".
The MTS Centre is 15,000 because of non-hockey events. How many concerts, monster truck shows, figure skating, wrestling events and stand-up comedians will ever attract 15,000 ppl? The occasional one. 90% of the time for non-NHL events most of those upper deck seats sit completely empty.
People have to stop thinking of MTS Centre as merely an NHL arena and nothing else.

This one time Slippy is right, any talk about expanding is a waste of time, becasue first of all it would cost way too much money to justify adding 1000-2000 more seats, and more importantly, Chipman has said many times that he does not want to expand the MTS Center and that he likes the way it is now.

I just see this thread as being useful in the sense that it keeps all the talk of more seats in MTSC in one place instead of people unfamiliar with the topic bringing it up in other threads. Yes, all of us from ROTJ have been over this a million times and know that it dosen't make sense to expand the arena. And why would they its financially successful just the way it is. But I don't want people bringing this up over and over again so keep this thread as a reminder that it just isn't going to happen so if people have that tingling feeling to ask this question, they can put it here, and read the facts about it just not happening.

If there is any expansion it will be done in the way of suites. Suites can be done and added to the upper ring that connects to the press boxes. They will get a quicker return on there investment so this kind of expansion will be profitable, the demand is there for these suites, I feel in time this will happen.

I agree that this will probably happen. 15000 seats is perfect for Winnipeg, at this time and for the foreseeable future anyway. My only problem with the place is that everyone in the upper ring is compelled to lean forward in order to obtain the best view. That was one of the unfortunate compromises they had to make in order to save a couple of sidewalks... but I digress.

That was an unfortunate compromise they had to make in order to save a couple of sidewalks... but I digress. I only have to lean forward when the people in row one lean forward. They lean forward for two reasons: 1) the big black bar directly in front of them (can it be replaced with something less obstructive?) and b) because they can (seriously, in many cases they don't have to lean forward to clearly see the ice surface). Fix this and I dare say the folks in the upper ring will be fine with the sightlines...
