Is there a architectual reason for this or is it simply that True North wants only to mirror the Press Box? Yes architectural, there is nothing to support it. Thanks!

That Barclay's configuration for hockey is crazy. There will be no specators, except for a few upper sections at one end of the rink??? And that's how it's going to be for years and years down the road? Seems horrible. The Barclays Center will be the quirkiest arena in the NHL. It was going to be built for hockey originally but Charles Wang the Islanders owner wouldn't make a commitment so Bruce Ratner the Barclays developer built it as an NBA only arena to save money and have better site lines for basketball. Then Charles Wang’s new arena in Nassau County was voted down in August 2011. Out of options he moved to the Barclays Center anyway. He said it was that or move out of New York completely. I think people could find such an odd arena charming. It will certainly be one of a kind. When they had the press conference announcing the move Bettman said they were going to add 500-1000 seats. My guess (no inside info) is that they add temporary risers with seats on them on the left side ends where the blank space is on the 2 corners. I suppose there is a chance they could reconfigure the sections facing the wrong way next to sections 07 and 25 on the chart I posted(that you had a pic of) too. The only way to completely fix the left side is to tear down the entire left side of the arena and rebuild it properly for hockey. Not going to happen. So they are stuck with this the next 28 years. As far as how this works overall, I think it will work as bizarre as it will look. There will be between 15,000-15,500 NON OBSTRUCTED seats. Everyone made a big deal of MTS being too small and it works. There will be 86-104 luxury boxes compare to the 32 old boxes they have now hanging from the ceiling. According to the New York Times the team will make 35 more million per year extra on luxury boxes and club seats alone compare to now at Nassau Coliseum. If you take a look at last year’s Forbes list(I know insert disclaimer) if you add 35 million to the Islanders league worst 63 million in overall revenue the Islanders would have finished 14th in the league with 98 million dollars. Then you have to factor in other stuff besides this. The Barclays Center has all the fancy restraunts and stores that generate huge $$$. Nassau Coliseum has none of this. The arena is in the heart of the city served by 12 subway lines and many bus lines. Nassau Coliseum is in the middle of suburbia with NO mass transportation at all! On accident they will draw more fans. In the last leaked gate data they finished below Phoenix in gate revenue. The team is getting huge media attention here in the US for a change (because people find Brooklyn super cool for some reason I don't understand) and fans don't have to worry anymore about relocation. Check out the Islanders section on HF boards. Almost everyone loves the move. Also the team will be able to sign big free agents for a change. They were turned down many times before because of how horrible the facilities were at Nassau Coliseum. Then there is the main thing, the Islanders massive TV deal. So they have a ton of leeway that most teams don't have. All they need from Barclays Center is semi adequate revenue compare to the almost 0 revenue they get now from Nassau Coliseum. On the negative side they won't get to keep all the arena revenue like the Jets do at MTS. No terms of the deal were released and probably never will be. But I don't think the deal is that horrible for the Islanders. Most people didn't expect Wang to make any decisions until the spring of 2015 yet he committed to the Barclays now. So that shows the deal he got isn't that bad else he would have waited for Nassau County to come up with something, Queens to come up with a new arena or sold to out of town interest like Quebec or Seattle. I think worst case scenario the Islanders will pass the crappy Sun Belt teams like Florida, Nashville, Tampa, Carolina and also Columbus/St. Louis revenue wise. At best maybe they pass a few other lower 2/3rd market teams like Colorado, Buffalo, Anaheim etc and become close to a mid-market team.

A+ thread. Would read again. This is not new information at all, it has been speculated for a long time that if they were to add skyboxes they would add in the those areas. This was all shown on Jetsowner a few years ago, so its not like you broke anything new here slippy, but by all means keep stroking yourself

if mts centre can figure out a way to put luxury seats on the roof, being able to watch the game from a "bird's eye view" transparent domed floor, I say Kudos to them for thinking of a way to generate more money. Good for them! If they can make a transparent roof I'd hope they'd be leasing the space out for a new Hooters location... m.

I for one wasn't aware of this so I appreciate him starting this thread as well as all the great replies which followed.
