That does seem crazy. I literally can not fathom how someone would not have seen the value in this tape, if it existed. I got a copy of the Jets final WHA game against Gretzky's Oilers from a guy about 8 years ago. That thing is awesome. They definitely had old WHA footage, just not for sale. I was directed to Peter Young, in the sports department, but someone returned my call and said the footage was not for sale. At the time, I was looking for VHS footage, but if I can recall, all they had was old film reels.

didn't the film maker who made "Death by Popcorn" find some tapes in the trash when CKY was moving and had problems when the film was being played at film festivals because he used the tapes without permission ?

I don't find it hard to believe they would throw out old tapes. The amount of room to store old footage would be immense. What they likely would have done at some point is try and transfer the footage they thought had value to modern storage means and then dispose of the old tapes that were subject to deterioration. Some tapes may have been in poor shape and the quality of a transfer less then acceptable making perhaps more footage deemed disposable. The people responsible for transferring tape or deciding what should be transferred may have not had the best judgement and I have no doubt some valuable stuff was lost forever.

thanks for the link Ric O, i knew i had seen this story before, which proves that footage was going in the trash, does seem crazy not to save the video of one of the most important hockey games ever played in Winnipeg

^You're welcome. Kind of makes you wonder how much good stuff has been lost forever though...

Why would CKY do that, especially if they knew there was local interest in the archived tapes? I could not have been the only one to inquire about old Jets footage over the years. I would love to shake the employee's hand who tipped off the Death by Popcorn crew about the tapes.

I'd even be interested in the CJOB audio of that game, for I'm sure that they did broadcast the game

CJOB re-broadcasted the very first ever Jets game against the New York Raiders(?) last year or the year before. so i am certain they have the Jets v CCCP game.

Well from personal experience I can tell you that CJAY TV / CKY TV had a lot of old stuff that is now gone forever.
My mother worked for them and later with them for many years (60s and 70s) and I was hoping (in the 90s) to get some footage of her.
It's all gone.
Heartbreaking actually.
