I was just curious to know if anyone on the forum had old Winnipeg Jets 1.0 stories?
I've heard a few, but was too young to remember the 70s and the first half of the 80s. I had heard of Babych and Winnipeg boxer Donny Lalonde going at it (who knows if it's true?), a legitimate Tkachuk-Selanne rivalry, Tie Domi and his off-ice "shenanigans."
I recall Berthiaume wanting out of Winnipeg, since the media reported he swore at a kid wanting an autograph after a particularly bad outing, Selanne being the nicest guy on the planet, and being pissed he was traded, Tkachuk rolling his vehicle, Domi partying too much, etc.
It's always interesting to hear, as I was at a bookstore, and spent over an hour reading excerpts of the unauthorized Bobby Hull book.

Ok, I'll start off.
Thomas Steen legitimately loved Winnipeg. He was given the chance to be traded to Vancouver, but he was afraid of diving.

My hockey team (Tyndall Park) got to play the Jets twice, when I was 9 and again when I was 10, at their January open practice. There was a contest on Skittlebits with Joey Gregorish where teams had to collect Campbell Soup labels and we won the contest both years. The 1st year, I believe Berthiaume was still one of the goalies and I remember jabbing at a rebound. He actually gave me a shot with his glove and then lifted me on top of the net. !@%$! The 2nd year, the Jets had Cronin and we jumped him and piled on at the end of the game. That was fun. Good sport about it.

My very first time on skates was at the Winnipeg Arena.
I was trying out for the community team - I think I was 6 when I started. And this was in 1980. Not sure how the community was able to have their first tryouts at the old barn - but there I was just completely awestruck.
Staring at the Jets logo on the ice - looking up at the Avco Cup banners and of course the huge portrait of the Queen. It was quite the experience for a little kid - especially for me at it was my first time on ice.
It's a memory that is still quite vivid.
Another Jets 1.0 memory is getting to meet my favorite Jet, Dale Hawerchuk at St. Vital Mall. I think this was in 1984. I still have the picture he signed for me. For me it was like meeting a rock star cause he was our Gretzky. Great memory.

Got to play at the Winnipeg Arena when I was 10 years old (88-89) season. played at 5pm then me and our entire team got to hang out and watch the Jets play the Islanders from the comfort of the upper deck. man was it steep up there
Great memories.
Oh yeah.. my Dad was season ticket holder in the first NHL year 79-80 season. I was born between the 2nd and 3rd period of the first game.. dad was at the game. Jets fan for life.

Grade 12 English assignment, 1984 I think. Wrote a paper on violence in sports. My friend snuck me into the arena during a Jets practice. I saw John Ferguson sitting in one of th seats talking to someone, can't remember who, and I started to ask him some questions. He turns to me with a big scowl on his face and says "get out of here kid. Make an appointment with my office." Nothing really bad, but the way he said left an impression I will not forget. Ended up interviewing Dave Ellett instead. What a goon.

My Dad took my brother and I to the WHA Jets last game when they won the Avco Cup.
Next season, he took us to our first NHL game, the original Tuxedo Night against Montreal and the Jets won!
I was in the building when Dave Ellett scored the winning goal in OT versus my old nemesis, the Oilers.

I was in the building when Dave Ellett scored the winning goal in OT versus my old nemesis, the Oilers. I was at this game as well. I grew up in Northern Manitoba, first the Pas and then Churchill. I had always followed the Jets but when I moved to Winnipeg after graduating I started to go to the games regularly with 7-11 tickets. You have to know I was as broke as broke could be back then, I mean scrounging for a bus pass and groceries every month so those tickets were a big time expense. Anyway the playoffs start against the Oilers and my buddy convinces me to shell out the unheard of sum of $30.00 (a weeks worth of groceries) for a ticket in the upper deck for that game. I did it because I truly believed that was the year we would finally beat the Oilers now that Gretzky was gone. I'll never forget that game as long as I live, because I've never experienced another sports event like it. All 15,000 + were on the exact same page emotionally and the tension went off the chart into that overtime. When Ellett scored that goal I honestly felt like the upper deck was going to come crashing down, it was swaying and bouncing so much and the cheer was earth shattering. I left the arena that night a life long Jets fan. I also thought that was going to be the year that it happened and I started saving my cash for the next round. Sadly we all know what happened next, that's when my life long hatred of the Oilers also took shape.

My latest memory occurred yesterday. My daughter took me to the Alumni practice. Bought me a Heritage Jersey, and lunch at Moxie's.
After we got our table, she had to step away for a bit. A group of guys came in and were seated next to our table. They asked me if I'd mind switching tables, as they were with dome other people at the table on the other side of mine. No problem. I said, and we did the switch. My daughter came back by then, and helped them move our now vacated table up against the one their friends were sitting at. The manager was not happy and very apologetic, and said that I hadn't needed to accommodate them. Again, no problem.
So while eating lunch, I could overhear snippets of their conversation. Heard "Black Aces" and that one of them were a member. Now I know the term refers to hockey players who practice with team, but don't get into many games, so my ears perked up, but I figure these were former junior players. Then I here the story of Tom McVie's benching Bobby Hull one game because Hull arrived late for the game. Heard one of these guys refer to himself as Kim.
That's when I realized that these were Jets Alumni!
So as my daughter and I were leaving, I figured couldn't pass this opportunity, up and I approached the one who initially requested the table switch.
"Excuse me" I said, "would you be Kim Clackson?" The answer was yes. I shook his hand, and thanked him for leaving me with some wonderful memories from my youth, a lot involving my father."
"They're the best kind" he said, and proceeded to introduce me to Andrew McBain, Scott Campbell, Hexi Riihiranta and Veli Pekka Ketola! The last two of whom I would watch in the WHA when my father took me to games at the old barn.
And today, I saw the Alumni game, thanks to a wonderful (early) Christmas gift from my two daughters!

I actually just heard of a story (sounded credible), that former Police officer, and father of Cody Eakins (Dallas Stars) one time chased John Ferguson Sr. out of his press box, after the two had some kind of heated argument. Butch Eakins was rather notorious during the 90s as a member of the WPS.

Little bit of a understatement "notorious" I have seen him and his wife first hand at minor league games in action, my son was same age and played against him! Have a hard time believing J.F. ran from him both guys were extremely tough SOB's Butch himself was a pretty dam good player.

I believe he was the officer that was responsible for the "Blue Flu" 15 years ago, where members of the WPS deliberately phoned in sick from work for a day to protest his indefinite suspension from the force.

My ex wife was a hostess for the Jets in the 90's. It used to piss me off because I had been a Jets fan living in NW Ont and she knew nothing about the Jets when we moved to Winnipeg in 1990. Fast forward to we lose the Jets and the Jets beat Detroit in Detroit to bring another game back to Winnipeg. Tickets were very hard to get and a friend said he'd hook us up. Well that day I sat by the phone and he claimed to have called.
So game day my ex wife somehow got me and my bf tickets that Detroit had released. We lost but I made it to the last Jets 1.0 game and I will remember it forever.
Side not I fluked into getting to the first ever Jets2.0 game with my 10 year old son.
