Council sets schedule for last Seattle arena voteSeattle's City Council has finally decided on a schedule for what could be the last big hurdle for the Seattle arena project. On Monday, Seattle City Council member Mike O'Brien told KING 5 he's scheduled a public meeting on a proposed street vacation for the project, for Tuesday, March 15 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at City Hall and scheduled officially by a council resolution next week. O'Brien says his transportation committee will then take up the street vacation request at the April 5 and April 19 meetings. He says April 19 would be the earliest it could be voted out of committee and sent to the full council for approval. The first window, under those circumstances, for a full vote on the vacation would be on April 25.[/u] It comes after lengthy discussions through this weekend, between council members and city staff, about the best way to proceed. At one point, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray even personally got involved, according to multiple City Hall sources, and pressured the council to set a date for the street vacation. Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes also advised the council during a closed-door Monday executive session on the best way to move forward. Investor Chris Hansen needs a two-block stretch of Occidental eliminated in order to build his planned NBA/NHL arena. He has offered to build a public park, new sidewalks, road and pedestrian bridge in exchange for the street vacation. However, the Port of Seattle and maritime interests have strongly suggested that the loss of the road will cause traffic congestion and damage maritime operations. The arena proposal was approved, via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the council, back in 2012. That deal called for multiple studies and a comprehensive environmental review. The final environmental study, and SDOT's recommendation, both stated there would be little impact if Occidental is eliminated. The SDOT November letter said there would be "no significant adverse impact" related to land use. If the street vacation request is successful, it will likely trigger a Master Use Permit (MUP). Most observers do expect at least one legal challenge of the MUP once it is approved. The Memorandum of Understanding expires in 2017 and calls for up to $200 million in public financing if National Basketball Association and National Hockey League teams are acquired. The NBA has shown little interest in Seattle since Hansen tried to buy the Sacramento Kings in 2013. The NHL has consistently flirted with Seattle, and its leagues commissioners have met face-to-face with Seattle's mayor more than once; however, no local group applied for expansion during a window last year. www.king5.com/story/news/local/seattle/2016/02/01/council-sets-schedule-last-seattle-arena-vote/79669372/?platform=hootsuite

Seattle must first support a minor-league team for many years. Then support multiple NHL exhibiton games featuring 2 non-Seattle teams on a weeknight.
Then, maybe, after building a new arena, they should get a look.
Y'know, just like Winnipeg.
