Are you tired of the City of Winnipeg naming highways and streets after people on City Council or other bureaucrats? Let's name a highway after a Winnipeg-born hero, and the recipient of the Order of Canada: Terry Fox. Despite suffering from Cancer, Terry Fox had a dream to raise money for cancer research, by running a marathon across Canada. He gave his life to help others. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over $500 million has been raised in his name. Please take some time, and sign my petition. I will present it to The City of Winnipeg, once we have enough signatures. Sign the petition here.

Be sure to check out today's Winnipeg Sun, or visit the Sun website, as they did a write-up on the petition: Ex-’Pegger pitches renaming Perimeter Terry Fox WayI urge everyone who is interested, to sign the petition. Having said that, the Terry Fox Foundation is always looking for volunteers to help organize fundraisers for cancer research, and help out with the Terry Fox Run. You can also donate to a charitable cause.

I agree with the sentiment to honour the man and his legacy but sorry, Terry Fox deserves more than a portion of the perimeter hwy. I'm sure there will be a future cancer research centre that would be more appropriate than another stretch of asphalt. Maybe, instead of sticking the Buhler or Richardson or Asper name on it they could consider Terry. EF U CANCER

Tell us why the Buhler or Richardson names don't belong? Fox is as worthy and more so of any recognition he gets. But the Buhler and Richardson families too are just as deserving.

I'm not saying those names don't belong but they're pasted on everything for their cash contribution. With the amount of cash they ante up they without a doubt likely deserve their names up there, but if it's a choice between who's got the most cash to ante up and Terry Fox, well Terry trumps them all. They're not even in his league. Which is why I feel he deserves better than some stretch of pavement way out on the south perimeter. Now rename the Cancer Care building in his honour and your headed in the right direction.

I've never liked renaming existing streets to honour individuals - or for any reason. What usually happens is that the locals continue to use the old name or, at best, there's a period of confusion during the transition period. If you're in New York you can be sure you're talking to a non-New Yorker if you call it the "Avenue of the Americas" instead of Sixth Avenue. It won't apply to the Perimeter but there's also a chance that the area served by the road becomes less than pleasant. Are the descendants of John Higgins still honoured that Higgins Avenue is named after their forebear?
Milt Stegall Drive and Cactus Jack Way are other examples. Their roads are now so far away from the arena and stadium that they were a part of that the naming is almost pointless. How much more appropriate it would have been to have the new unnamed roads around IGF named after these two.
I'd like to see something more connected with Terry Fox named in his honour. Perhaps calling the next hospital built in Winnipeg the Terry Fox Hospital? A cancer care center named the Terry Fox Centre for Cancer Care? That'd be more on point. And more poignant.
All that said, I'm good to go however this ends up. This is a very literal IMHO posting.

The perimeter highway just seems like a perfect fit for something like this, and Terry Fox is about as deserving as anyone for the honour. Literally everyone who visits Winnipeg by driving will cross the perimiter, so everyone would see it even if they're just driving through. And due to it's function, it will never have the problems you discussed like becoming a run down cest-pool or having a public facility that it's nearby move. To me it just makes good sense, but I think it should be the whole highway, not just a section like I believe is being discussed.

"run down cest-pool" Man your lucky this isn't the Free Press or you would have that pulled for using a racist comment. The fine people of Point Douglas are outraged!

Are there any businesses with a Perimeter address? It seems like all businesses that run along the Perimeter are off of service roads, so it's not like this will effect any of the existing businesses. The only thing that would change, would be the route signs, I would imagine...
I had also heard a rumor, that if the Province does, in fact intend to change the name of the Perimeter to Terry Fox Drive, the announcement would be as early as this weekend, to coincide with the 32nd annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but the timing could not be better.
