With Russia claiming they have legally annexed Crimea, and most other countries saying it was illegal what long term effects will this have? The EU, USA and Canada have instated trade santions on Russia and have backed Ukraine's soverignty, will this lead to more santions and a deepening rift between the East and West, or will it eventually lead to a war? Interested to hear thoughts and opinions on the subject.

There will be no war...Sanctions for a perhaps a year then back to status Quo. Any one remember the Tien A Mien Square massacre? Sanctions gallore...then after a few years back to normal The screwed up thing is if Moscow would have been patient let True domecracy prevail and have a fair and legit referendum with out the Military or strong arm Militia groups the population of Crimea would have voted to join Russia anyways. The Vast Majority of the population is ethnic Russian the UN supports free will and would more than likely recognized the vote if done in a fair and democratic way. The minority Ukranians are largely opposed to the union while the indigenous Tartars are abolutly against it.... That being said Majority rules. .

there will be no war over Crimea.Sanctions are a joke and have no bite where it concerns Crimea. the West can talk big, but in the end, they will sit back and let it be. however, IF Russia was to try to invade the rest of Ukraine, you can be sure that the World would stand up and take notice. thankfully, i cant see that happening.

In the long run, there are sure to be big problems with this move, just like pretty much any annexation of land by a hostile and invading country. The vote was rigged, as ethnic Russians compose just over 1/2 the population of the Crimea, not 97%. If Russia attempts to annex land closer to the EU, such as Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, etc., it could lead to war. The Ukraine is in a geographic location that is nearly strategically impossible for Western Nations to do much about.

Whenever you see a political vote with 97% favouring one side, and according to some more than 100% voter turnout, there is something not quite right with the vote.

I am more concerned with Russia or the US annexing parts of Canada for our natural resources.

As a Ukrainian Canadian, I'm afraid for the people of Ukraine. Russia dwarfs Ukraine in every possible way, but most importantly in term of military presence; Ukraine doesn't stand a chance against the Russian military. Russia is acting like it's 1940 all over again, forcefully invading and annexing portions of other countries. I pray that they are stopped by any means necessary. They have no right to invade any part of Ukraine or any other country.

Step one: foreign country passes laws widely derided as bigoted and intolerant. Step two: foreign country hosts Olympics. Step three: foreign country loses in the premier event at said Olympics. Gold goes to a North American nation. Step four: foreign country annexes another country over the protests of the international community.
Something familiar about all this...

Tasteless joke: it's the start of the Soviet Reunion!
Seriously, though, this is not cool, and I don't think anyone's going to step in. I hope it stops here.
