It's mind boggling that the best year Bob Essensa ever had in the NHL, he was a Vezina Trophy finalist, and lead the Jets to the playoffs, only to be benched for the entire first round against the Vancouver Canucks, in favor of Rick Tabaracci, an inexperienced backup. It made no sense to me at the time, and I have yet to hear a rational explanation. Tabaracci was impressive in the first 4 games, but burned out, and let in around 20 goals in the final 3 games. Why was Essense benched, and was it the idea of Smith or Paddock?
1991-92 stats:
Essensa 21-17-6, 2.88 GAA, 0.910 SP* (tied for second in NHL) Tabaracci 6-7-3, 3.23 GAA, 0.889 SP
Playoffs:
Tabaracci 3-4, 4.03 GAA, 0.877 SP

Essensa got hurt one yr entering playoffs and got hurt again during the 1st rd series. Thought it was the yr they had Edmonton on the ropes 3-1 but lost the next 3 though. Don't remember the series against Canucks.

Don't remember the series against Canucks. It was 1990 against Edmonton, where Essensa was hurt. In 1992, Essensa actually came in relief for 1/2 a game after the Cancuks blew the door open on the 6th or 7th game, so it wasn't because Essensa was hurt. It's sad to look back and wonder what could ahve happened if the Jets had put Goalie Bob in that series.

Right... Beauregard had to play in '90 right? Ya I remember now the Tabarracci saga. I was young but remember watching with my parents and all of us not understanding why he continued to play.
Want irony? Tabaracci suited up for Atlanta in one game in '99-00.

If he was injured, then he would not have dressed for any games. However, the powers that be (Mike Smith?) must have hated Essensa not to play him. Smith had a history of putting his own interests ahead of the team's. Smith is the reason Hawerchuk and Housley wanted out of Winnipeg.

If memory serves I think Bob was coming off injury and Itchy Scratchy Tabaracci was having a hot streak. By games five and six he had cooled off though, and Bob was fully recovered. Bob should have had the last two starts.

I recall Don Cherry in the pregame from Vancouver regarding the goalie decision saying that John Paddock had more guts than a slaughterhouse.

Beauregard and Essensa split the games in the 1990 series against the Oilers...Did Essensa get hurt at some point in the series? He did start game one and then they went with Beau in Game 2

Just to clarify, I am NOT talking about the Jets-Oilers series of 1990. This was two years later, when Essensa led the Jets to a first round match with the Canucks. It was also the first time I had seen the magic of Pavel Bure.

Bure, in particular, was unstoppable. 20 goals in three games. Way to go, Smith and Paddock....

1991-92 was the final year of Essensa's contract and was set to become a RFA. GM Mike Smith and his Agent couldn't come to terms by a self imposed deadline from Essensa (prior to the end of the season). Essensa planed to file for Arbitration and Smith knew this. So Smith and probably Shenkerow told Paddock to use Tabaracci instead, thinking if Essensa had success in the playoffs it would effect the amount awarded in arbitration.
This totally backfired as the Arbitrator awarded the first Million dollar contract in an arbitration case, based only on the regular season play, which was the guide they always used, because players don't get payed for playoff games!
The comments made by the team in arbitration, is what killed goalie Bob.
