That means the Hornets will now own and have access to all of the historical elements from the recent Bobcats' era (2004-14) as well as the original Hornets teams that played in Charlotte — including stats from stars such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Muggsy Bogues. All of the Hornets records from their years in New Orleans will revert to the Pelicans' history, Whitfield said. "That was a piece that was really important to us because we knew how important that was to our fans," Whitfield said. "Being able to have the old Hornets alumni back and be a part of family was important. We can say to them, 'Hey, you are welcome back and you are a part of the family.'" So if the NBA can do this for basketball in Charlotte, why can't the NHL do this for the Winnipeg Jets in Hockey?

^ I'm sure itll happen eventually, most likely once the team is either relocated or settled in for 20 years once the out-clause is decided.

If TNSE really wanted the records I guess they can make a case for them. Maybe they felt they didn't have that kind of leverage in 2011 but now they do. And maybe the NHL wasn't prepared to do anything with those records considering Phoenix's situation wasn't resolved as of yet. Handing Jets 1.0 history back to TNSE at that point just wouldn't have been good optics for the Coyotes.
Now that Jets 2.0 are solidified in the league and the Yotes situation have improved (as having an owner) I suppose it's time for the history to be transferred.

^ The optics is why i don't think they will make a case for now. Let things simmer in the desert. Once a permanent decision has been made True North will prolly get the old Jets records stats etc.

Congrats to the NBA on this decision...acknowledge and reward the fans that were actually part of the making of that history.
No matter the state of hockey in Phoenix, Jets history means nothing real to the people of AZ so hopefully the NHL will acknowledge that soon and do the right thing for us (those of us who still care about this kind of thing).

Driving home this evening listening to H&L they mentioned that the NBA will also transfer the records of the old Seattle SuperSonics to the new Seattle NBA franchise from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

And I think it's a pretty easy change to make.
The Yotes have enough recorded history themselves so they don't need Jets 1.0 stats.
Those can be transferred to Jets 2.0 but we still retain Thrasher records. So our recorded history can be from 1979 to 1996 - then nothing between 1996-97 to 1998-99 and then back up with Thrashers 1999-2011 to the current Jets since 2011.

So if the NBA can do this for basketball in Charlotte, why can't the NHL do this for the Winnipeg Jets in Hockey? Oh my god an NBA post!!! Before you know it all you guys will be NBA fans This is really a great sports story even for non-NBA fans like yourself. The Bobcat brand practically killed NBA in Charlotte. The only reason the Hornets moved in the 1st place was the owner got accused of kidnaping/sexually assaulting a woman. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Shinn (read sexual assault part) and taxpayers didn't want to fund an arena for someone like that so a deal was made where the owner would take the team and name/history to New Orleans and Charlotte would get an expansion team(the owner refused to sell). Since I followed sports(starting in 1989) this was the most heartbreaking relocation in any sport. In your article it also said the move is paying off He said 90 per cent of last year's season ticket holders have renewed for the 2014-15 season. He also said the Hornets are currently No. 1 in the league for new season tickets sales. To get the Hornet name back from New Orleans last year the Charlotte ownership made a donation to New Orleans charity(I think it went to wildlife stuff). If Chipman/Thomson wanted they could call up the Edge Ice clowns and make an offer. Maybe a donation to the clowns to fund ice rinks in Arizona so kids play the game and the game grows. Or hell maybe just straight out cash to help the clowns pay off their loans to Fortress/the NHL. There is no way in hell the clowns will or can say no to some cold hard $$$$. God knows they need it. Bettman would approve of it. Anything to help out one of his southern pets. The few fans the Coyotes have would probably like to give the history back too. If you were a Coyotes fan why in the hell would you want any association to Winnipeg when 100% of Winnipeg wanted your team to die. Best for a clean break for them too!! Jets fans should start a movement/petition. In Charlotte a pair of high school kids started a "bring back the buzz" website and look at what happened. They even held massive rallies at games to bring back the Hornet name/history like this. (for sure watch from the 2.30 mark on) This is how you kill a crappy brand like the Bobcats and get your name/history back. Copy something like this at one of the Jets games next year. Something like a "we want our history" or "we want our banners" etc... A thread needs to be started in the main form instead of the other sports form to organize this. Oh and give Atlanta(or the league) the Thrasher history back. If Atlanta ever did get a team back I'm sure they wouldn't go with Thrashers since it's a failed brand but there is no need for Winnipeg to keep it. Just go with the Jets history and say the team was "discontinued" for the time in between.

Charlotte Hornet/Bobcat attendance comparison
1st number is the team average/2nd is the league average
Charlotte Hornets
1988-89 23,172 15,087 1 of 25 1989-90 23,901 15,649 2 of 27 1990-91 23,906 15,254 1 of 27 1991-92 23,698 15,683 1 of 27 1992-93 23,698 16,050 1 of 27 1993-94 23,698 16,226 1 of 27 1994-95 23,698 16,729 1 of 27 1995-96 24,042 17,254 1 of 29 1996-97 24,042 16,925 1 of 29 1997-98 23,406 17,132 2 of 29 1998-99 19,232 16,752 6 of 29 1999-00 17,874 16,845 11 of 29 2000-01 15,010 16,778 21 of 29 2001-02 11,286 16,966 29 of 29
Charlotte Bobcats (1st season was in the old arena) 2004-05 14,432 17,319 29 of 30 2005-06 16,366 17,559 22 of 30 2006-07 15,549 17,759 27 of 30 2007-08 14,717 17,395 24 of 30 2008-09 14,574 17,503 26 of 30 2009-10 15,824 17,150 22 of 30 2010-11 15,846 17,317 21 of 30 2011-12 14,757 17,274 25 of 30 2012-13 15,324 17,347 24 of 30 2013-14 15,519 17,407 25 of 30
The Bobcat totals are sadly inflated too, the Hornet ones are legit. Attendance fell at the end when the fans knew the team was moving because of the owner.

{snip} (for sure watch from the 2.30 mark on) Wow, that was like watching a clip from an alternate universe where True North called the team "Manitoba Polar Bears". MTS would certainly been echoing with 'Go Jets Go!' season after season. m.

As great as Chipman/Thomson are the 1 weakness with those 2 is for some reason they don't embrace Jets 1.0. It was fan outcry that prevented the Jets from being the Polar Bears. They will need a little prodding to bring the history back. You guys should shoot for a big rally the 1st time you play the Coyotes at MTS Centre next season.

Thinking about it I really think LeBlanc would love to give the history back. Not only would he get some $$$ but it would help his "strategy" in marketing to fans who are fans of 2 teams. He'd probably think if presented with the idea, hey Canadian fans would really like this, I bet with a goodwill gesture like this I might even be able to draw a few more Canadian fans to Coyote games.

I agree if chipman made a call asking about it and seeing if they could run it by bettman together, it would work. No way Leblanc would turn down a PR move. Maybe Chipman could donate to the firefighters relief funds for the wild fires. Looks good on both sides. And you said it was fans that prevented polar bears....fans and Jeremy Jacobs who hated the idea of another bear team in the NHL. Thomson seemed to like Jets but Chipman wanted his own identity.
