The only reason the Jets are back is because of Darren Ford Thanks Darren !! Um. No. Just... No. The reason the Jets are back are because of the passionate fan base in Winnipeg. If you think, for one second, that Darren Ford is the ONLY reason they came back... I will just assume you're sleeping on a bed made of white t-shirts, with the term "Mission Accomplished" screen printed on the back, with an autograph of Darren Ford - which was also screen printed on the shirt because, in his words, he "would be too busy signing autographs all night, and just wants to enjoy the (home opener)". The guy is an egotistical humble brag - and although he kept the conversation of the NHL in Winnipeg at the forefront of social media, to assume that Winnipeg would somehow FORGET about the NHL and the Winnipeg Jets without him updating a 'Jets Meter' and posting a few 'inside blogs' every few years - you should probably hand over your season tickets to a deserving fan. honestly - this guy is praised like a saviour, but he's just a 'blogger' with an inflated sense of self worth and actually says 'you're welcome' when some lunatic says thank you to HIM for bringing the Jets back to Winnipeg. THE FANS brought the Jets back to Winnipeg. YOU, WE - the FANS. Not some delusional internet mouthpiece. harsh but actually very, very accurate...

Some may have too much love for the guy, and some a WEE tad too much hate... I'm passionate about hockey in Winnipeg - and he always acted as if he was the sole reason professional hockey returned to Manitoba. It offended me as a Jets 1.0 fan, A Moose fan, and as a fan of the team we have now. Anyway - glad to see the AHL return to Winnipeg. Nobody ever thought we'd be in a position where we housed an NHL team and it's affiliate. Even Darren "Mission Accomplished" Ford couldn't have seen this coming. Although, I'm sure he had the 'inside scoop' on this move.

I stumbled across the Jetsowner site by accident. Great place to talk to people who believed in the team coming back especially with all the doubters out there (I think we can all think of a few). Near the end, ya I think it got to Darren's head a bit, especially with that other site he moderated that has since closed down. But I think he has a place here as a member. Good place to talk hockey and to talk about the Jets, why not?

Darren actually wakes up each day thinking he had something to do with the return of the Jets. It sad really... Ya see, I don't think that's the case. I spoke with him all of three times in my life and once was at my kid's skating lesson long after ROTJ so only twice in connection with ROTJ. And I inferred nothing that suggested he felt he deserved credit for ROTJ. What specifically can be shown to definitively demonstrate that he believes he's responsible for ROTJ? There's nothing out there I can see. m.

There's nothing out there I can see. m. ya, ppl are pretty hard on him. I met him after a game once and he seemed OK. Let's look at some facts. He was a voice for the return long before it was popular thought the a team could return. I joined the site in 03 and if you brought up the return to anyone 90% of them would laugh in your face and say it's impossible. The site that darren made kept all of our hopes alive. It help educate ppl and change ppls minds on how real a possibility it was. I remember the day my dad switched to the believer side. That moment I knew it could happen. Darren also had inside info. That's a fact now tho back then tons of ppl didn't believe him. He gave us that info in a form of the jets meter. Which was actually brilliant. I think Ovi1 never believed and was constantly negative on any possible positive news. Another fact was Darren got invited to the news conference. Maybe showing that chipman felt he was part of the return. Sure, the fans brought them back but it was a snowball effect of believing they could return started by Darren. The only foul I can remember is those mission accomplished shirts. Wouldn't look so bad if he didn't sign them. All in all iI still think he's a pretty awesome guy. Cheers Darren.

^ The whole site at the end got out of control though. There were those "Mission Accomplished" t-shirts, and the banning anyone who said the team had to be the Jets. There seemed to be an entitled attitude at the end but like I said, water under the bridge let's watch some hockey.

how does someone buy boxes of "Mission Accomplished" shirts, with their signature printed on because "they wouldn't have time to sign them all", if they didn't feel responsible for bringing the Jets back. I'm sure the guy has been humbled since then, but let's not sit here and pretend that he wasn't a little delusional at one point in time.

^ Haven't we all? The forum got out of control at the end and things went to his head. When his Jet Stream forum was a flop I'm sure it was a wake up call. Guys followed the Jets, not Darren. Whatever, we have our team that's all that matters.

I think ppl are probably taking things to literal.

The autograph on the t-shirts was a bit telling of an ego involved, but in the big picture it was Darren's willingness to stand up and take the arrows of ridicule coming from everywhere that got my respect. I believed the Jets would be back from the day they left , once the conditions became right for the return...but I don't think I would have been overt about it as he was, and that's to his credit.
Yeah Chipman and Thomson brought the team back and nobody else deserves credit...except for the 13,000 who bought season tickets in a second and the 8000 who wanted to but couldn't, and the thousands more who didn't make the 8000 because they had to cut off the waiting list somewhere. A lot of those people were the ones who kept ROTJ going, topical, kept Winnipeg at the top of every "which city deserves the next NHL team?" list.
I honestly believed that grassroots show of support was meaningful in building some momentum as it made it clear that there was a critical mass of support that wasn't going away no matter how many times they were told to stop dreaming and accept the AHL, the best you're ever going to get.
I hated the banning of those who dared to bring up the name "Jets", never understood that and frankly they would have lost me then if I hadn't known the return was so close to becoming reality.
Anyway, let's not forget there were some good times back then, and how the excitement level was raised with any bit of news and speculation that came out to most of us, only via a few Jetsowner members who actually were in the know. That was the privilege of being an ROTJ (not DF) zealot.
...but like the Wolfman says, "let's watch some (Jets) hockey!"

I remember sitting around a campfire at lake of the woods with some friends bringing the topic up and every single one of them said no way not happening. One friend who had Moose season tickets said he was happy with the Moose liked the cheap tickets and beer haha! After reality set in he bought Jets tickets in an instant and has been ecstatic ever since...funny how things went.

I won't try to discredit the fact that those grassroots supporters who believed wen most didn't, had an impact. 15 year later, for that to still be on the minds of Winnipeggers, that must have had at least a small impact.
I don't know when anyone stood up and took an arrow, and I don't really care. I believe that the Jets played so well last night, they're looking like a team that could make a deep playoff run and I for one will be at every game. Beers are on me!
