I don't like it. Neither would the Jets, as it reminds me of the old Smythe Division.
If the NHL rewards Quebec and Las Vegas franchsies, they will have to move a team from the East back to the Western Conference. My guess is Columbus, as they have less pull than Detroit, who would reject it. I truly believe this is what the league will look like in 2017-18:
Pacific:
1. LA 2. Anaheim 3. Arizona 4. Las Vegas 5. Vancouver 6. San Jose 7. Calgary 8. Edmonton
Central:
1. Winnipeg 2. Chicago 3. Minnesota 4. St. Louis 5. Columbus 6. Dallas 7. Nashville 8. Colorado
Metro:
1. Rangers 2. Islanders 3. New Jersey 4. Philadelphia 5. Washington 6. Carolina 7. Florida 8. Tampa Bay
Atlantic
1. Toronto 2. Montreal 3. Ottawa 4. Quebec 5. Detroit 6. Pittsburgh 7. Boston 8. Buffalo
They will move the Florida teams into the Metro Division, to balance things out.
The NHL really shot themselves in the foot with the realignment, thinking there would be a ton of interest for expansion. I think they were banking on Seattle/Portland and Las Vegas to be the two teams that would expand.

^ I think its obvious they wanted a team to go to Seattle. They haven't shut up about Seattle at all over the last 2 years or so. If Seattle put in a bid even with no guarantee of an arena you can bet your ass Bettman would have given Seattle and Vegas the expansion teams over Toronto and Quebec and have the team play in Key arena long term if necessary to have that market.

I would hate playing in that new division, so many games starting late. No teams in our time zone. We would have anywhere from 12-18 game starting late. No thanks. To the other poster, can't see Columbus agreeing to move to a division with no teams in the same time zone. The NHL is really going to have come up with some new to please all the teams.

No way the even Bettman would put the NHL in Key Arena. 5,000 unobstructed seats is not happening, Hell if the NHL would allow something that stupid then Seattle would have made a bid.

^^^ The problem isn't just weather Bettman would allow it but weather any of the ownership groups would want to do something that stupid.

Detroit should go back west. They have natural rivals there and plus it suits their system better. They are a europena style open ice team. The east is mostly smash mouth hockey because the fans demand a physical style.
Detroit going to the east is against their character...and they havent faired well so far imo

The west is far more physical than the east.

Maybe in recent times you are right, the east with teams like toronto and pittsburg has become more open but it still has certain franchises that demand a physical style. I dont really think of Anaheim as an overly physical team though and they are the class of the conference right now...neither is chicago...LA? yea they are a physical team.

saw this on HF boards. Thoughts? Thoughts...makes me want to puke. I would hate being in a Northwest division again. We are clearly much better aligned with Minnesota, Chicago, St.Louis, Nashville... Hopefully the NHL does everything possible to keep western teams from moving east.

^^^That's what I thought when I saw this but it did make things even and if it did come down to this or no Nordiques I'd plug my nose and accept this. I wouldn't be surprised if they just throw Quebec(if they come back) in the Atlantic and Vegas in the Pacific. MLB went with 6 teams in the NL central and 4 in the AL west for a long time until Houston went from the NL central to the AL west. The other option is temporary move Columbus back west. I don't think long term they keep either Columbus or Detroit in the West since neither team wants that. I think over the long term things can even out because the next teams either relocation or expansion will probably be western with Seattle, Houston and Portland getting teams at some point possible if certain market conditions change.
