Who needs the queen, were not British. What we need is a Stanley cup banner hanging from the rafters.

^I agree, don't like the whole royal thing, to me it's more about Manitoba history than the queen. and I don't think it should be in MTSC. one thing I was wondering about, is it not time for a new Manitoba flag ? I say drop the U J part

I never understood why people wanted to bring back the Queen portrait, other than for nostalgia purposes. We are not a British colony, and Great Britain has no influence over Canada since the early 20th century. My ancestors were British, and I consider myself 100% Canadian.
We should really honour Jets 1.0 players like Hawerchuk, Hull, and Steen first.

Our constitution was signed in 1981. We remain a part of the colonies as well. We are a commonwealth. But, I too have no use for the royals

I say drop the U J part I agree. There is nothing distinctive about our flag. From a distance it's hard to distinguish our flag from that of Ontario as they are both the same with the exception of the coat of arms. I don't mind if we have a bison on our flag but we should drop the Union Jack and change the background colour from red to something else.

^ sounds perfect, has it ever even been talked about ? A number of years ago the Winnipeg Sun ran a contest to design a new flag for Manitoba. There were lots of designs submitted but nothing ever came from it. It would appear that Manitoba is sometimes a little too conservative and slow to change.

I am not against the royals, in fact I think they still play an important role both for England and to a certain extent Canada and the rest of th commonwealth. Having said that, I totally agree that Manitoba should have a new flag, not because I would want to be rid of the union flag, but because it is time to have a flag that represents Manitoba - what it was and what it is. ...I would only argue it's worth waiting a while longer to make sure that the people who comissioned the current Manitoba logo are long gone!

Personally I don't have a issue with the Union Jack as part of our provincial flag...I have issue with it because it is so utterly indistinctive. Virtually the same flag as Ontario.. I defy anyone to tell the difference from a hundred yards or more. I'm sure not many in B.C have issues with their flag incorporating the Jack ..it is still distinctive.. Think of the pride those from Saskachewan have with their flag...it unique...distinctive. 9 out 10 provinces either have a British Flag incorporated (either the Scottish saltire, English St. Georges Cross, or the English Lion ) into their flag.. Even Quebec has the English Lion and a royal crown on its coat of arms... No issue with the 'Jack...but would like it gone simply for a new identity.. The NDP almost got a New Flag tabled in 2009 but it faded away... www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/Manitoba-flag-called-outdated-a-relic-40343152.html

Looks interesting, but need ot login to read. Mind posting here instead? cheers. Here ya go... Its from 2009 not much has happened on the subject in a few years.. SOME grassroots members of Manitoba’s governing New Democrats want the province to adopt a new flag, saying the current one, as well as that of Ontario, is an archaic symbol of British rule. Manitoba’s flag "is outdated and a relic from the days of our former British colonial heritage", reads a resolution by the NDP’s Riel constituency association in south Winnipeg. The resolution is on the agenda of the provincial party’s annual convention next month.
"Manitoba’s flag is often confused with Ontario’s flag, with the only difference being a bison... instead of three maple leaves." Both provinces’ flags are similar to the Red Ensign that Canada used as a national flag prior to adopting the maple leaf design in 1965. There is a red background, a Union Jack in the upper left corner, and a provincial symbol toward the bottom right corner. The Manitoba symbol contains a bison. Ontario’s features a clutch of maple leaves. "We’ve moved beyond our history of being part of a British dominion and I think we’re bigger and better than that.," Sean Robert, the man pushing the proposal, said Wednesday. It’s not the first time Manitoba and Ontario have been accused of needing a pennant makeover. In 2001, a U.S.-based volunteer group of flag enthusiasts called the North American Vexillological Association ranked the flags of 72 states, provinces, territories and districts. Ontario and Manitoba placed 43rd and 44th respectively. The group praised those with simple designs such as Quebec’s Fleur-de-lis, which ranked third on the continent behind Texas and New Mexico. Robert, a liquor commission employee who ran unsuccessfully for the federal NDP last year in Winnipeg South, is proposing the government hold a provincewide public contest to develop a more modern flag. "I’m no artist and I wouldn’t have the first idea as to what to put forward, but I’m sure that there are a lot of creative minds out there who would jump at the chance to design something new." But any change is likely to be an uphill battle. Manitoba’s opposition Progressive Conservatives say the current flag is an important symbol of the province’s roots. "I think it is good as is," Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen said. "It reflects some important aspects of Manitoba’s history. Certainly many of our traditions came here as a result of the British democratic parliamentary system. There’s also a reflection with the bison in the flag of the important role that ... Manitoba’s natural wildlife played with our First Nations and Metis people." Premier Gary Doer did not comment. A spokesman for the premier says Doer attends conventions to listen to debates and "not prejudge what (the) convention may or may not pass." — The Canadian Press
