Do you think the NHL over estimated the value of what teams are worth?
The $500 million price tag seems to have scared off many cities.
Only two serious candidates seems strange.
You would think big companies and big wheels would be lining up to
get the chance to own a big league team.

To simplify my answer, absolutely. There is no way you can just list an expansion fee no way a team in Vegas will be worth anything close to a team in Quebec City. If they played this smart they would have at least gotten a bid from a Toronto group and caused a bid for a franchise. Now the negotiating powers are on the bidders because there are two openings for teams and two bidders.

Really bad move by the NHL. THIS could be the move that finally sees Bettman get the boot (probably not though). No way they can lower the fees going forward, it would make the league look weak. There is literally no move now that wouldn't make the league look weak. They have to take the two bidders, get them through the process and close the expansion doors. I doubt you'll see expansion again for quite some time.

No, the NHL didn't overprice expansion. For a change the NHL did the right thing. It prevented questionable markets from bidding which is a good thing. Seattle had no arena and needed the NBA first. Portland is weak corporately and doesn't have enough population(yet) to support 2 full time teams well. Toronto is a pipe dream because of MLSE and you need to fund an arena. Canadian fans complain about all the time about the weak teams in the league so the NHL finally did something to prevent questionable markets from bidding. You guys should be happy. They set a high standard. Isn't that what you always wanted?
In the long run the league can get $500M again. Seattle once they get NBA will probably bid $500M. NHL first didn't pencil out because they are privately funding the arena in either spot. You need NBA to make it work. Alexander in Houston could sell/die and the new owner could want the NHL. Keep in mind too the next American TV deal will be a LOT more than $200M so that will increase all franchise values/expansion prices.

I criticize the league all the time but here is a rare instant they did everything right. I don't think the jumped the gun at all. Seattle needs a couple more years to get their house in order(get NBA expansion and get arena shovel ready). 3 years bear minimum I bet. Portland needs probably another 10 years of population growth at least. Besides this wasn't the time to bring in a 2nd team with the Blazers bottoming out. They will suck for at least a couple years. What do that have other than Lillard? Last thing in the world they needed was another team given how bad the Blazers are going to suck(they lost 4 starters). Alexander is a problem in Houston. What was the league supposed to do? Wait 10-20 years and root for him to die and hope the new owner wants NHL?
No way should they have put this off. Quebec's arena is ready. It's time for a team! No way should they have to wait for Seattle, Portland, Houston to be ready. Vegas sold 13,300 season tickets and has no other pro teams. The owner is confident enough for a team so good for him. If it don't work the team can be booted out. The arena doesn't need to be "saved" because the Vegas arena would have been built anyway. Vegas gets so many shows a privately funded arena pays for itself.
So what was the league suppose to wait for? They don't need more cities for leverage for expansion. It's not like a team being relocated. If Vegas/Quebec refuse to pay what the NHL wants the NHL doesn't have to expand at all. So the NHL still has the leverage.
The only way you can really complain is if Quebec/Vegas are willing to pay and the NHL pulls a bush league move by not accepting the money for some stupid reason like symmetry etc...

Ya they would say that because both markets have major problems. Kansas City isn't big enough for 3 teams and isn't growing fast. The mayor won't offer any incentives for a team either because the city is making a profit off the current arrangement. So ya of course they'd complain. They want a team for nothing because the market isn't good for NHL(or and NBA team either) Bottom line is it would be stupid to add a market like KC. It would be at best exceptionally weak and most likely go under.
A second team in Toronto would be great but you have the MLSE problem. Pro sports teams in general don't play nice when if comes to territory. MLSE would want a ton of $$$ for territory rights. So much it wouldn't make it worth while. Plus you'd have to fund an arena. Doesn't pencil out. NHL also doesn't want Grame R. He is a crook. If Toronto ever got a 2nd team he won't be the guy who brings it.
There's already 30 teams!!! No way the NHL should add more unless those markets have high confidence in themselves/have everything ready. If you're not willing to pay that means the local ownership groups either aren't ready(seattle) or aren't good enough to support a team at more than a weak level.
There is no embarrassment. The NHL if they want made bear minimum 1B dollars!!!! I wish I could embarrass my self and make a billion dollars just like that.

Keep this in mind too. The Islanders sold for $485M. If you read the article I posted yesterday the Islanders will stop losing money at the Barclays Center but will only be around 20th in revenue(a lower 2/3rd team). So $500M isn't that crazy. It's only crazy if a.)your market is shakey b.)you aren't ready c.) you have to deal with greedy MLSE

All of a sudden the Coyotes situation looks like Seattle/Portland would be the emergency landing spot. Also looks like the league will go with a the 4 conference alignment perhaps... |
