SoFi Stadium construction ongoing in L.A. within 'Safe' guidelinesConstruction of SoFi Stadium, the future home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, is ongoing amid the statewide "Safe at Home" orders in California. The directives put in place at the city and state levels last week allowed for the continuation of commercial construction, though it's a fluid situation. There remains the possibility that fewer exceptions to the stay-at-home orders will be granted in response to the growing coronavirus pandemic, which could postpone the Inglewood project and the renovation of Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium, construction for which also continues. "We're going to do whatever we need to do to save lives," Alex Comisar, a spokesman for L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, said Wednesday. "We'll continue to take direction from public health experts from the county and the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] to determine what policies need to be put into place. With any activity that's going on, we expect folks to take into account proper social distancing." In a statement released Friday, representatives for SoFi Stadium said construction "continues moving forward with an increased emphasis on the already existing elevated health and safety protocols put in place last week." SoFi Stadium, a revolutionary indoor-outdoor venue that will sit at the center of a 298-acre development, was deemed 85% complete in late January and is still expected to open with Taylor Swift concerts July 25 and 26. All nonessential employees are currently working from home, and job-site personnel are working with their general contractors to increase health and safety protocols, according to stadium representatives. In a conversation posted to YouTube by the Dodgers on Tuesday, team president Stan Kasten said construction workers at Dodger Stadium are "fully compliant with all of the regulations of the county, city and state, as well as the CDC and [World Health Organization]. All of those things are super important to all of us. But consistent with all of that guidance, the work is continuing." The Dodgers are undertaking a $100 million renovation that will include a two-acre center-field plaza, upgraded outfield pavilions, a new sound system and a series of elevators and escalators that will provide a 360-degree connection around the park's perimeter. Field-facing renovations are complete, Kasten said. In recent days, construction has slowed, and fewer workers have been on site, a function of both the season being delayed and nationwide protocols to combat the coronavirus. SoFi Stadium is scheduled to host the Rams and Chargers in the final five months of the 2020 calendar year and stage the Super Bowl in February 2022. But tighter restrictions by the state of California, L.A. County or the city of Inglewood could shut down construction and force both teams to scramble for temporary homes for the fall. The project has already been delayed a year because of heavy rainfall in early 2017. On March 17, one day after the L.A. County health officer prohibited gatherings of 50 or more people, the State Building and Construction Trade Council of California sent a memo to its members outlining safety measures that included adding sanitary facilities, bringing food from home, maintaining separation of at least 6 feet and performing deep cleanings on job sites. The memo stated: "If these guidelines cannot be met and a project is in tight quarters, consideration should be given to shutting the construction project down until safer conditions exist." www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28955197/sofi-stadium-construction-ongoing-la-safe-guidelines

Eric Dickerson to speak with Rams about fans' logo concernsHall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson has offered to be the voice of Los Angeles Rams fans who have been angry about the new team logos that were released earlier this week. Dickerson, who is the Rams' vice president of business development, considers himself among those who are unhappy with the new look. On Wednesday, Dickerson tweeted that he would speak with the Rams about fans' concerns. "@ramsnfl fans, I reviewed your comments regarding new logos and share in your disappointment," Dickerson tweeted. "I'll be speaking with the Rams on our behalf. Please like if you prefer the logo on the left and retweet to vote for the logo on the right (Rams booster club). - The Rambassador." On Monday, the Rams revealed the first of a two-part rebranding effort as they prepare for the 2020 season in their new home at SoFi Stadium. The Rams unveiled updated team colors and logos, and new uniforms are expected to roll out later this spring. The Rams have moved on from the navy blue, light gold and white color scheme that they adopted in 2000 in St. Louis. Their new colors are similar to their throwback royal blue and gold -- but with a brighter twist. The Rams are calling their new hues "Rams Royal" and "Sol." Before the reveal, Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff acknowledged that for some fans, the new look would require an adjustment period. "I'm sure it will be a surprise. It will be change," Demoff said. "But lots of things are, and I think it's a change that our fans will come to know and love over time." During a virtual telethon the Rams hosted Tuesday on a local television station to raise funds for coronavirus relief, Demoff said that if more than $2 million were raised, he would read the top 10 mean tweets he received about the new logos. The telethon raised more than $2,045,000, according to the Rams. Rams fans also created an online petition to change the new logo. More than 6,200 signatures have been collected. This is not the first time Dickerson, a star player for the Rams in the 1980s, has expressed his displeasure about matters within the organization. In 2016, during the Rams' homecoming season in Los Angeles, Dickerson voiced criticism across several media outlets, including ESPN, about coach Jeff Fisher as the team stumbled to a 4-9 record. Fisher, whose job already was in question, was fired with three games remaining in the season. The Rams finished the season 4-12. www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28953905/eric-dickerson-speak-rams-fans-logo-concerns

NFL owners approve $500 million in extra funding for Rams' $5 billion SoFi StadiumThe Los Angeles Rams have received the $500 million they were seeking from the NFL to fund the construction of their new SoFi Stadium, according to The Athletic’s Daniel Kaplan. NFL owners reportedly approved the loan on Tuesday. The Rams were reported last week to have requested the half-billion to help cover costs of the team’s stadium in Inglewood, which will be shared with the Los Angeles Chargers. The stadium is believed to hold a price tag in the neighborhood of $5 billion, by far the most expensive stadium in any sport in American history. How is a stadium that expensive? The eye-popping price tag is a result of a number of factors the Rams might not have foreseen when making the move for their massive stadium out west. The inevitable unexpected costs of projects this big, earthquake-proofing and other civil needs, construction of a surrounding entertainment district and lower seat license sales than expected have all played a part. With the loan approved, the Rams will now owe the league a total of $900 million through its G-4 loan program. Rams owner Stan Kroenke has been reported to have $1.6 billion of his money invested in the project, along with more than $2 billion from various banks. Requesting a half-billion dollars in loans isn’t the first eyebrow-raising financial news for the Rams this offseason, as two former players — Todd Gurley and Clay Matthews — aired out complaints of missed payments. The Rams general manager countered that the guaranteed money owed was not yet due. Coronavirus hasn’t helped construction on Rams’ stadium Like so many other projects and ventures, the Rams’ SoFi Stadium project hasn’t been helped by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Stadium builders were allowed by the California government to continue construction as most of the rest of the country closed its doors, but five workers have tested positive for the virus. SoFi Stadium was previously scheduled to open in July with a pair of Taylor Swift concerts, but those have already been postponed due to the pandemic. The bigger issue for the Rams is that the coronavirus could hurt the team’s ability to pay the gargantuan loans they took on to build the stadium, as it would lose millions in income if fans aren’t allowed into games when the NFL season begins, which feels like a very real possibility. Perhaps foreseeing that issue, the Rams reportedly requested “massive” debt waivers and additional time to repay their most recent NFL loan. sports.yahoo.com/nfl-owners-approve-500-million-in-extra-funding-for-rams-5-billion-so-fi-stadium-035601453.html

Rams reveal new uniforms that include metallic chrome blue helmetThe Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday revealed their rebranded uniforms that will debut this season. The new look includes a blue jersey featuring yellow gradient numbering and interchangeable blue or yellow pants. There is also an off-white jersey and pant combination. The Rams' new helmet is a metallic chrome blue, with a gradient yellow horn and blue face mask. "I already told my friends this is the coolest jersey I ever wore, I ever got to put on," said Rams wide receiver Robert Woods, who donned the iconic USC uniform in college. "It just feels like we're a part of something new and exciting. ... We're setting the trend, really." The Rams unveiled new uniforms for the upcoming season. Los Angeles Rams The new uniforms come as the Rams prepare to open the 2020 season against the Dallas Cowboys at the new SoFi Stadium, a $5 billion project funded by team owner Stan Kroenke. "Our focus was always, this is going to be an amazing, iconic, modern building. You want the uniforms to match the style and design of the building," Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff said. "But still have the tradition and some elements that our fans had grown to know and love. I think that's a balancing act for any team to go through this as you move forward." The Rams' rebranding effort began in 2016, when the team relocated from St. Louis to Los Angeles. Their plan always aimed at debuting a new look to coincide with the opening of SoFi Stadium. In March, the Rams unveiled updated colors and logos, as they moved on from navy blue, light gold and white, the color scheme they adopted in 2000 in St. Louis. The Rams have dubbed their new hues "Rams Royal," "Sol" and "Bone," which refers to the off-white uniform combination. "I really enjoy the color combos, and I think our away uniforms are going to be some of the best in the league," Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth said. "I really think that bone color is going to be amazing, so I'm excited about it." The updated logos include a modern-looking ram head and an L.A. letter mark that includes a horn. Rams fans, along with Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson, have vocalized displeasure with the recent changes, most notably the new team logos. Demoff acknowledged when the team released the new color scheme and logos that it could take time for fans to adapt to the modern look, but he expressed confidence that they will eventually embrace the change. Nearly two months later, Demoff said he thinks there has been an improvement in fans' tone, and he remains eager for them to see the new uniform and brand in action. "The easiest changes to get done are to go backward. The hardest changes to get done are to move forward," Demoff said. "We thought that was the right approach for the stadium, but I think we'll have a much better sense of the overall brand launch once we're playing games, with fans in the stadium, and people see the brand, the uniforms, the logos in action." The Rams' original rebranding launch included events at SoFi Stadium and players wearing the gear throughout the offseason program, but those plans were scrapped because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Rams have not designated a home or away jersey, Demoff said, and are launching their rebrand with only two jerseys to maintain flexibility moving forward. "We thought with the new stadium, with two new jerseys, that would be plenty to unveil in 2020, and we didn't need to have all of our potential looks come out this year," he said. "We have every available possibility to us to expand our uniform concepts as we move forward into 2021 and 2022." www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29168922/rams-reveal-new-uniforms-include-metallic-chrome-blue-helmet

5 more workers at SoFi Stadium test positive for COVID-19, prompting LA County inquiryThe Los Angeles County health department is reportedly investigating the SoFi Stadium construction site as five more workers tested positive for COVID-19. Two of the patients were working on the 6,000-seat performance venue attached to the Inglewood stadium, another on the stadium's video board, one in the pump house for an artificial lake and a fifth working in the "Trailer Complex NFL Conference Room." The stadium is listed on the county Department of Public Health website as a congregate setting being investigated due to multiple positive cases. As of Thursday, the stadium was listed on the website as having 13 positive cases, with the five new cases reported by The Los Angeles Times boosting that number to 18. abc7.com/sofi-stadium-rams-chargers-nfl/6255892/
