I never understood why Paddock never really got much of a chance to coach or manage after his run with the Jets. IMO, he was our best coach and General Manager in the Jets 1979-96 era.
Paddock later got a chance to coach Ottawa in 2007-08, and did relatively well until he was canned over the Ray Emery controversy. It's interesting to note that after Paddock was fired from the Senators, they immediately went into a tailspin, and got swept in the playoffs. Ottawa has never been to the playoffs since.
Fun facts:
2007-08 Ottawa Senators coaching:
John Paddock 36-22-6 Bryan Murray 7-9-2
Total: 43-31-8

^I agree, getting Dallas Drake was a key acquisition for the Jets.

a bad trade: we gave Bryan Marchment to Chicago for Troy Murray. Note: Domi wasn't traded for Eastwood and Olczyk, it was just Eastwood. Olczyk came from NYR on the same day, for a prospect that never materialized (Alexei Vasiliev). Sounds like a Mike Smith draft pick to me.

John Paddock was great. Felt terrible for him as he managed the team during it's demise.

The two different trades that brought Eddie O to Winnipeg were my favourite trades. Although, I'm not sure they are the best ones.

After Domi burned his bridges in Winnipeg at the end of his run, trading him for Mike Eastwood and Eddie Olczyk was one of the best deals Paddock made. (Actually all of the trades he made other than the Selanne deal he made practically at gunpoint were solid.) We shipped out a malcontent, (who is anything but welcome at the ACC these days for how he treated the organization which wasn't much different than how he was here,) for a top faceoff/penalty killer and an aging Eddie who had one more good year left. Paddock also traded Mike Smith era bust Mats Lindgren and a draft pick for Dave Manson who, past his prime, was better than Lindgren ever was. His coup de grace was trading Bob Essensa and Sergei Bautin for Dallas Drake and Tim Cheveldae. Essensa was shot after Smith destroyed him and Bautin was well... Bautin. Cheveldae was a decent goaltender who helped pave the way for Khabibulin to be the Jets' #1 goaltender and Dallas Drake went on to be a solid top tier power forward for the Jets/Coyotes for many years to come. Yea I never understtod why the Wings basically gave away Drake but goaltending was a major issue within the team.

Willy Lindstrom for Laurie Boschman hard to argue that one.

I was fortunate to go to a lot of games during the 95-96 season, and he was always in the thick of the game. He was a great acquisition. The Jets managed to pull a few good trades out in the 90's. I remember the King/Domi trade well, they played out the rest of the season quite well after that trade. Paddock was a good coach, and being from Manitoba it was a dream for him to be involved with the Jets.
