Great news from San Diego. The Padres are bringing back their old school brown uniforms with some gold thrown in. No pics on how they will look 100%. The fan base forced this.

The Padres are, in fact, bringing brown back to their uniforms.

San Diego will wear some form of brown starting in 2020, sources confirmed to MLB.com's A.J. Cassavell on Friday. The team's plan to return to using brown uniforms was first reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Padres have notified MLB of the intended change, and they have until May to submit the final versions of their new uniforms. Per the report, the team started focus-group testing brown uniforms with Padres fans this week, with all the variations featuring brown-and-gold combinations.

The Padres have had blue and white as their primary color scheme since they moved to Petco Park, and they haven't used brown on a regular jersey since 1990. But executive chairman Ron Fowler hinted during the 2018 season that he expected San Diego to bring back brown uniforms and color schemes by '20.

The team has most recently worn brown and yellow throwback jerseys for Friday night home games.

Padres have to look good because they are going to go on a great run soon. They have the top farm system in baseball including 10 of the top 100 prospects. It's a thought crime to rank any teams system anywhere near as good as San Diego's. They are also a dark horse to sign Manny Machado since they have almost no committed payroll other than Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer. The Padres are the next Astros/Cubs/Braves.

I really hope the do win it all since they never won before and the city got screwed by the Chargers/Spanos.

Something else interesting in baseball history regarding the Padres. It's very rare in baseball history to be a baseball team in a city with no other competition(NFL,NBA,NHL). In the NBA there are currently 7 markets that are the only team in town, the NHL has 8, football has 2 though one of those is Green Bay which is supported by Milwaukee.

In baseball history here is how rare it's been to be the only team in town. Remember the NBA started in 1946 so this is from 1946 on.

Baltimore Orioles became the only team in town when the Colts left but I put an astrick because Baltimore is in the same combined statistical area as Washington DC and got a crap ton of fans from DC to go to games until the Nationals showed up so they truly don't count.

The San Diego Padres have signed Manny Machado to a 10 year $300M dollar deal the largest free agent deal in pro sports history and the second biggest contract in sports history(Giancarlo Stanton signed a 13 year $325M extension with the Marlins).

3rd base was the one organizational hole they had. The hapless Reinsdorf owned White Sox were the runner up. They had brought Machado's brother in law Yonder Alonso and one of his best friends Jon Jay to entice him. Instead they told Machado to sign with San Diego since it's a much nicer city than Chicago and because of the Padres top notch farm system. Both had played with the Padres in the past. Oops!!!

Still reeling from Chargers' move, San Diego gets a jolt with Manny Machado joining Padres

It’s the most laid-back city in this country.

We’re talking, of course, about San Diego

Formal dress attire in "America's Finest City" is putting on a pair of jeans and white Chuck Taylors instead of shorts and flip-flops.

Fish taco joints qualify as five-star restaurants.

Fine arts are sand castles on Pacific and Mission Beach.

About three million people live in greater San Diego, the largest metropolitan area in the country with only one major professional sports franchise.

And that team, the Padres, happen to have the worst all-time winning percentage of any active team in Major League Baseball, have not had a winning record since 2010, were last in the playoffs 13 years ago and have never won a World Series championship.

The Padres decided to dramatically change that narrative and jarred this sleepy city like a tsunami, dropping $300 million on Manny Machado, generating a buzz in their clubhouse last seen when Tony Gwynn, Ken Caminiti and Trevor Hoffman were teammates two decades ago.

“It’s amazing what that has done here," Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer said Wednesday morning. “It’s a tremendous leap for this club and organization.

“In the last 24 hours, there’s such a vibe and buzz, everyone is so excited. We can’t wait for him to get here.

“I know San Diego is so pumped."

Hosmer, who signed the biggest contact in Padres’ history – eight-years, $144 million – a year ago, understands what a championship-caliber sports franchise can do for a city. He lived it.

Hosmer, drafted and signed by the Kansas City Royals in 2008, watched the franchise struggle for years before managing a winning record in 2013. They reached the World Series in 2014, and a year later, were World Series champs for the first time in 30 years.

“There’s something about a city not having experienced it in a long time," Hosmer said, “to be the group that kind of re-energizes, regroups a city. It’s such a unique feeling.


“Everybody’s dying to see what San Diego can be like. We’re hoping we can bust out the city."

Padres infielder Greg Garcia, the grandson of former Padres manager Dave Garcia, perhaps knows better than any of his teammates what it would mean for the Padres to win again. He was born and raised in the San Diego area. He grew up a diehard Padres fan. Loved the San Diego Chargers and was a season-ticket holder.

Now, with the Chargers gone, he feels the city’s pain and anguish just like every other San Diegan, believing the Padres can go a long way to healing their sports soul.

“I was a big Chargers’ fan, but I’m like a lot of people in San Diego, I can’t root for them," he said. “Can’t do it. It’s brutal. I experienced the same thing in St. Louis when the Rams left. Those people felt the same way.

“Now, it’s up to us players to go out there and build a culture, because San Diego deserves a winner. And I think we’re just the team to do it.

“I think this town is ready to explode."

Padres manager Andy Green stressed the impact they can make in the community during his inaugural spring-training speech, telling the players they can make a real difference in the community, helping San Diego regain civic pride.

“In our meeting," Padres catcher Austin Hedges said, “we talked about how starved this city is for wins. That’s what we expect to give them."

The NFL, NBA and ABA has come and gone in San Diego, and the Padres have been around for 50 years, but never has a major San Diego franchise won a championship.

“We, as an organization want to completely change that," general partner Peter Seidler told reporters "We want our franchise to win year after year after year. We’re going to do whatever we can rationally do to help make that happen."

The Padres, with baseball’s strongest farm system, aren’t fooling themselves or anyone else into thinking they are going to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West this year. Probably not the Colorado Rockies, either. You still need pitching to win in this game.

Yet, after committing $527 million on Machado, Hosmer and Wil Myers the last three winters, Padres chairman Ron Fowler and Seidler are letting everyone in San Diego know that mediocrity will no longer be tolerated.

They’re here to win.

And it better be soon.

“We’re the only sports team available to watch now," Padres catcher Chris Stewart said, “so hopefully it will draw the fans out of the woodwork. Maybe, the former football fans will turn into Padres’ fans now. Hopefully, they’ll come out in droves this season and finally fill that stadium.

“My God, after getting Manny, we’re sure pushing for it, I know that."

Machado, 26, the four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, is scheduled to arrive in town Thursday night, after undergoing a second set of physicals for the Padres to insure his contract. His press conference is tentatively scheduled for Friday morning. He’ll step onto the field for the first time wearing a Padres’ uniform, and instantly, the Padres will once again be relevant.

“The guy just got $300 million," Hosmer said, “so the respect level in the game of baseball for him is definitely there."

Machado may be just one man, but being the richest free agent in baseball history, he has not only lifted up an organization, but also an entire community.

Machado could be the Padres’ first player to start an All-Star Game since Gwynn in 1998, their first player since Adrian Gonzales in 2010 to hit 32 homers, and perhaps even be only the second MVP in Padres’ history, joining Caminiti in 1996.

Said Garcia: “I’ll tell you, it’s a great time to be a Padre."

Padres see $3M ticket boost thanks to Machado

The San Diego Padres have generated nearly $3 million of additional ticket revenue in the two weeks since Manny Machado agreed to a 10-year, $300 million contract, according to the team's president of business operations, Erik Greupner.

Greupner did not provide specifics on the raw number of tickets sold, but said it was "at least double" what is normally projected for that time of year.

Prior to signing Machado to what was then the largest free-agent contract in North American professional sports -- a title now held by Bryce Harper, who received a 13-year, $330 million deal from the Philadelphia Phillies -- Padres executives submitted projections for the initial wave of ticket revenue, and Greupner said the team is "at or ahead of what we anticipated."

Greupner has been with the organization in a variety of roles since December 2010, and compared this spike in interest with those generated going into 2015, after a flurry of offseason trades and free-agent acquisitions, and going into 2016, with the team set to host the All-Star Game.

"But even in 2015 and 2016, we didn't see a spike like we've seen this year in terms of demand," Greupner said in a phone conversation. "And frankly, it's been maintained for a longer period of time so far than some of the spikes we've seen in the past. So, we're encouraged that it's really setting a new trend line for us this season in terms of demand for tickets and merchandise."

The Padres have finished 10 of the past 11 seasons with a losing record and have not made the playoffs since 2006. Petco Park has ranked no better than 13th in attendance since then, despite establishing itself among the preeminent facilities in the sport.

Greupner and other front-office executives are hopeful that the presence of Machado, coupled with a farm system that ESPN's Keith Law ranks No. 1 in baseball, will set the foundation for consistent winning for a 50-year-old franchise that has yet to capture a World Series title. Unless that happens, Greupner admitted, the initial interest from the Machado signing will hardly matter.

"There's no doubt we have a tremendous opportunity with the Chargers having left San Diego for L.A., and also frankly a tremendous obligation as the sole remaining professional sports franchise in San Diego, to deliver a winner to the city of San Diego," Greupner said. "It's a tremendous opportunity. Our plan is certainly, through winning, to build an even deeper connection to the San Diego fan base and really give them an opportunity to celebrate a winner, which is something that the city hasn't had for some time."

San Diego Padres unveil new uniforms with brown-and-gold color scheme

rown is back for the San Diego Padres.

The Padres unveiled new uniforms Saturday night that feature a brown-and-gold color scheme, similar to the one used from the franchise's inception in 1969 through 1984.

The new uniforms were unveiled at Petco Park in front a few thousand fans by players Fernando Tatis Jr., Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado.


Machado modeled the home white uniform with brown pinstripes that included the word "Padres" in brown on the front, trimmed in gold.

Hosmer showed off the solid brown primary road jersey with a yellow "San Diego" across the front, with sand pants.

Tatis modeled a tan alternate road jersey with brown pinstripes. That jersey had "San Diego" across the front in brown and trimmed in gold.

Fans have clamored for years for a return to the brown. The team's primary color scheme for several years has been blue and white.

"People wanted brown and we gave it to them," executive chairman Ron Fowler said. "Now we've got to start winning baseball games."

"It's going to be different, it's going to be unique, and like they said, they're going to know who's playing right away when they see the brown on the field," said Tatis, whose phenomenal rookie season was cut short by a stress reaction in his lower back.

The Padres continue to build what they hope is a contending season. They've missed the playoffs for 13 straight seasons and haven't had a winning record since 2010.

"I think that's the way everyone's looking at it, is we can turn the page of those tough times," Hosmer said. "We're trying to start a new wave now, a new culture, and the brown really represents the beginning of all that."

The Padres finished last in the National League West at 70-92. Manager Andy Green was fired with eight games to go. Rookie manager Jayce Tingler was hired late last month.

The San Diego Padres have locked up 22 year old super star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. to a 14 year $330M deal. He would have been a free agent 4 seasons from now. He wants to finish his career in beautiful San Diego ala Tony Gwynn and get his own statue. He gets a no trade clause. This is the 3rd largest contract in MLB history next to Mike Trout and Mookie Betts extensions.

The Padres made the playoffs for the 1st time in 14 years last year and have added Tampa ace Blake Snell and Cubs ace Yu Darvish to the rotation. Plus they have Dinelson Lamet who finished 4th in Cy young voting last year and the top lefty in the minor leagues Mackenzie Gore. The Padres have a 6 deep rotation plus Tatis and Machado. Most people think the are the 2nd best team in the league slightly behind the Dodgers. It will be a great rivalry for years to come between those 2. I hope the Padres can win at least one title since neither the Padres or Chargers have ever won a title and as a bleep you to Dean Spanos for leaving such a nice city.
