Sportsnet announces Don Cherry to immediately step down from HNIC www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/don-cherry-immediately-step-hockey-night-canada/Hockey analyst Don Cherry will immediately step down from his role with Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet announced on Monday. The news comes one day after Sportsnet issued an apology for comments Cherry made during Saturday night’s Hockey Night broadcast. During Coach’s Corner, Cherry singled out new immigrants for not wearing poppies to honour Canadian veterans and soldiers ahead of Remembrance Day. The 85-year-old Cherry has been on Coach’s Corner since 1982 when the program was first started on CBC. He was a voice every Saturday night for hockey fans across the country, appearing alongside Coach’s Corner host Ron MacLean since 1986. His coverage extended into the Stanley Cup Playoffs as well. MacLean reacted to Cherry’s comments on Sunday by apologizing to both viewers and Canadians. Coach’s Corner joined Sportsnet’s NHL coverage after Rogers acquired the NHL television rights in 2014.

It's probably a few years too late. Aside from the content issue in his latest diatribe, he was irritatingly forgetful of the material to be shown and Ron would have to steer him to subject at hand. I won't miss him. And all he had to say was that he wished ALL people wore poppies and he would have been OK. That certainly would be my sentiment.

Except he's wrong . Attendance at remembrance day events is up.It has been for a a few years now.I am old enough to remember him coaching and use to enjoy his talks. Now they are hardly about hockey .As said previously he wanders off topic now, seems lost. He has been nothing but an angry old man for a while now. Why on earth bring immigrants into it? It's sad really .He should have road off into the sunset years ago. This has nothing to do with Liberals or any other group.Times do change. Nothing stays the same. His time came and went a while ago.

Another part of the Liberal agenda makes you wonder if Sportsnet was part of the media bailout, but will never know do to censorship. Snowflakes of the world are taking over. Maybe TSN wakes up and picks up Don!

It has everything to do with Liberals. Tell me Hillman, why wasn’t Justin run out of town for hiding his blackface controversy? Answer is, he’s a liberal insider and the same rules don’t apply to him.

Answer is, he’s a liberal insider and the same rules don’t apply to him. To start with I cantstand the little prick.I agree if it had been a conservative he would have been drawn and quartered. But this has nothing to do with that. The world has changed and you simply cannot blame stuff randomly on immigrants. You can say everyone should wear a poppy. He hasn't been relevant for years. It's a sad way to go out.

Just an add.I am a history buff.In Canada's past immigrants from Ireland and the Ukraine, the French, the Dukabors, the Jews, the first nations, the Metis....... have all been blamed for things. It's a good thing if that's not acceptable anymore.

I believe it was at the Heritage Classic where Cherry profile some indigenous nhl’s. , in respect of the treaty land of Regina. “Racist “ is one of the shut down words of the left. Cherry’s point was showing appreciation for the builders and defenders of Canada, which makes it one of the most attractive places for immigration. As much as the left creates their own news, Cherry never and would never make blanket comments about people who look different than himself. He’s said way more about Europeans than anyone else. Once everything becomes “racist” then nothing is racist. Racism is very very ugly and it doesn’t happen on “coaches corner”.

First the word immigrant was never used by Don! I think it offends people who walk by and turn there heads when they seen people selling poppies. If people feel shamed because they ignore the poppy sellers then good job Don, he may have lost his job but I can see poppy sale going up next year and like always Don still is contributing to the troops. P.s. if you are a new Canadian and purchased a poppy good for you, he wasn't talking about you he was talking about the other guy, and if you are a long time Canadian and didn't purchase a poppy then shame on you!

SN was looking for a reason to dump him. His heart was in the right spot, unfortunately, his comments didn't come out the right way.

HNIC ended officially when Rogers took over.
Don was let go from some imposter entity.
Rogers will never have the same legacy, folklore and impact that it did while still on the relevant CBC of the day.
As for Ron MacLean, being a character, is not the same as having character.............

Being an immigrant myself that is proud to live here but in a way has a bone on both sides of the pond I didnt feel offended by Don Cherrys comments at all. I may not always buy a poppy but that doesn't mean I dont love Canada and support its troops. Too many people have thin skin nowadays and get offended at the most minute issues
