I am so sick of people saying "an enforcer is a waste of a roster spot" or " the league has changed" BS !! A skilled team will always need someone to watch out for their stars. Why wasn't Ryan Reeves brought home ? Maurice rarely uses his 4th line any way. The Jets small D are getting hammered. Remember the pounding Enstrom took ? History does repeat just ask Hawerchuck. He was hurt in almost the exact spot on the ice as Sheif. When guys like Ehlers need to drop the gloves there ia a major problem with this roster. End rant.

Agree. Just look at how the Flames were (1) pounding Morrissey and Pionk small dmen; (2) indiscriminately going after/hurting our star players - Sheif and Laine.
If the league will not protect star players then someone else will fill the void.
Problem with Maurice is when we had probably the toughest guy in the league with Pelosi he used him sparingly if non-existently.
Another problem with the Jets is they have been drafting/getting small dmen. Heinola is a classic example. Skill at the position is fine but they will get their @sses kicked come playoff time. No deterrence and no size.

It was not always like this. I recall hearing that Anaheim wanted to pull out all stops to beat the Jets as quickly as possible, since at the time, Winnipeg had the biggest team in the NHL, and the Ducks were afraid the longer the series went, the more it would wear them down.
The loss of Buff, Tanev, Lemieux, Chiarot, and Trouba has really hurt us badly. For the first time since the return of the Jets, they look like the Jets of the 80s. Too small and passive to compete.

Logan Stanley would have been great in this series, if he lived up to expectations.

No doubt we need to add some toughness and grit. The loss of our nuclear weapon Buff is an issue. Today's game featured an addition of some grit and we did okay. But I agree with all you guys, we gotta get tougher.

An alternative description might be more appealing than an "enforcer". Look at all the enforcers with an early demise in the NHL. It is truly horrific. Kordic, Probert , Evans, Rypien, Boogaard and others among the men dying early. I am of the opinion that players like Ryan Reaves, Bieksa, Chariot, Buff and almost any Bruin are tough, still play hockey, and can protect their less masculine players on the team without being enforcers. Like it or not the pure ankle skating fighter is gone from the game. I am looking at you Jimmy Mann!

The other way is to keep going after the other teams stars as long as they do. I'd say to tkachuk his buddy gaudreau will be next...

Stanley or even Nogier would have been way more effective than Pionk. Pionk Heinola and Roslovic need to be packaged up and shipped out.

Flames figured out that if they neutralized Pionk by pounding him at every turn, legal or not, the team defence would fall apart. Pionk is a keeper but we need more size. logan Shaw and Wheeler are big enough, but we do not want Wheeler taking 5 minute majors and I am not sure that Shaw is fast enough or willing to mix it up.

Calgary is built for the playoffs. Winnipeg is not. Small defensemen and a 4th line that doesn't hit. I've been a supporter of Chevy but that is starting to dim. Eakin and DeMelo are both good players but undersized and too meek for the playoffs.

All Pionk did during this series was run away. He was so panicked by Calgary's bigger players he would cough up the puck consistently. Rolovic did the same. Neither is built for playoff hockey and should be shipped out. Heinola won't be any different. 2 yrs ago the opposition payed a price when they went up against Trouba, Buff, Myers, Chariot. Until that is re established we will never be a playoff team. There has to be players to make the opposition think twice about taking runs and cheap shots.

Putting the year in hindsight and not knowing for sure why Buff decided his heart wasn't in it, it's not hard to fathom it could have something to do with being the only one left of that 4 you mention so having to take on that whole role by himself. He's getting old and spent his career being policeman and years being Chopper to Yakky Doodle Enstrom. Meanwhile Chevy making a habit of taking the best player on the draft board under 5'11 185lbs.

Chevy has to be feeling some heat. the team has deteriorated for two years straight and the lacks in the team have not been addressed well through either the draft, development or trades. Admittedly, the Byfuglien debacle was both problematic and protracted but Chevy will have no excuse next season.

Heinola is already different ... as an 18 year old he made it through training camp and was not out of place playing 20 minutes plus on a team with no protection. Morrissey as a 18 year old went back to Juniors and then spent a whole year in the AHL Morrissey didn't play a 20 minute NHL game until he was 21 on a team with Buff and Chairot and Trouba.
