1) The NHL owners and player agreed to play in the bubble with the prime reason to generate revenue from TV as did NBA and MLB PGA LPGA. Somewhat different bubbles but no tickets sold.
The NHL was doing exceptional well with TV ratings. The NBA was 20% below expectations. MLB was down 10%. These are all in entertainment starved environments.
PGA is up 27% LPGA is up 11%
the PGA and LPGA have remained unpolitical. The NHL made relatively small gestures to BLM. The NBA was a non-stop advertisement for BLM.
2) The NBA shut down the playoffs over an police shooting of a person a Black man with a record of sexual assault that could not be subdues with 2 taser shots. The best impact synopsis that I could find was by Jason Whitlock "WHITLOCK: MILWAUKEE BUCKS, BLACK ATHLETES CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO ‘JUST DO IT’

and on the actions of the players
3) The Impact of the NBA political "action" will be a further drop off in their TV viewership to be followed by less TV revenue and no ongoing gate money coming in and quickly leading to smaller contracts for the players.
4) The NHL taking significant political stances and action will reduce their revenue. It is already down about 40 % due to loss of gate. Rogers and NBC are not going offer more Money for less people watching,
The NHL CBA allocates 50% of the total revenue to the players salary. The NHLPA have agreed to freeze the salary cap to the 81.5 M for the next several seasons until revenue rises. 2.5 Billion of the 5B of NHL revenue goes to player salaries. 37% of NHL revenue (2018) is gate receipts. The NHL revenues are set to drop 40% IF they open to empty areas. The cap should fall to somewhere around 50M (50M *31 = 1.5 B) 40% of the players payment will be held in escrow until the seasons revenue is in. A player with a 6M contract will only get 3.6M
5) The owners are taking on risks. The governments are losing revenue from not having the Arena's they built bringing in any money, There will not be groundswell of taxpayer support for new arenas or repairs.
The small franchises that rely more heavily on league generated pooled revenue will be financially at risk. That covers Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary along with Arizona and Florida, Carolina, Buffalo, Tampa and Nashville. Why would Seattlke owner pay his billion dollar expansion fee when he will be able to buy any of these teams for 500,000 M (pre-firesale prices)
Bottom line
The NHL players are definitely looking at a cut in salary and likely a reduction in NHLPA members and should not be doing anything to hurt the reputation and earning power of the league.
Some of these players have banked more money than they will ever use and they should step away from the league and do their political actions on their own.

The Just Do It slogan was inspired by the last words of confessed double-murderer Gary Gilmore, who responded “let’s do it” when seated before a firing squad in 1977. Nike, the Portland-based shoe manufacturer, wanted a rebellious, counter-culture advertising campaign to reach young people. What’s more rebellious than the last words of a murderer?
and on the actions of the players
Rather than a pointless gesture designed to “garner attention” or organizing protests designed to seek “justice” for a resisting criminal suspect, why can’t we encourage black professional athletes to pool their economic resources and invest in black communities?
Jobs combat racism far more than destroying sports leagues that employ and compensate black men. Black professional athletes could start banks and businesses that dramatically improve black communities.
Athletes shouldn’t listen to the well-intentioned people who tell them to just do anything. Just doing it accomplishes nothing of value. It’s the philosophy of a confessed double-murderer sitting before a firing squad.
You can take the advice of Gary Gilmore or consider mine. Your choice.
