Not too soon to start looking ahead. TSN radio today reported persistent rumours that both Laine and Ehlers are being shopped. This causes me to think that maybe Chevy is looking to add more toughness like the Tkachuk brothers.

So let's get tough! What about this? Laine for Parayko and Thomas. Do we need to add here?

St.L can't afford to add salary. They have 2M in cap space and have to sign Pietrangelo (8x5 min). Parayko 5.5 and Thomas 900 k = 6.4 M and Laine is a 6.75 and they have to add a 700K player to fill the extra roster spot.
Frank Seravalli of TSN who can up with the bright idea of Laine/ Ehlers being on the trade board. Meanwhile the only Blue on the Trade board is Vince Dunn who is an RFA and been a regular d-man for them for all 3 years of his ELC and they will note be able to sign to the 1.5-2 x 2 bridge contract he has earned. Out of the 2015 draft he has the 6th most NHL games of all Defenseman drafted.
St.L is in heaps of trouble.
Parayko and Steen with them keeping 2M of cap for Pionk lets them keep Pietroangelo. Someone is going to take advantage of St.L spending over the cap.
If the Jets are looking for a centre then Parayko and Schenn for Rosolvic and Niku. And then the Jets have used up 11M of their 20M cap space. Or they could sign Pietraanegelo for 10x 2.

connor Scheifele Laine
Ehlers Wheeler Appleton
Copp Lowry Roslovic
Vesalainen Gustafsson Harkins
Perrault (spare veteran) only making 3.3 M too much.
The RW Appleton / Harkins and Roslovic can move up and down to see where they fit the best.
Eakins was not that much of an upgrade on Harkins/Appleton and would put Roslovic ahead. He would be a good addition but a 2M max as he should be in the bottom 6 going forward. Not likely he will be getting better going forward.
I am really hoping that Vesalainen has figured it out as having a good big player never hurts. Is he ready to make the jump? It took Lowry 5 years after his draft year to make it to the NHL. Charlie Coyle 2010 28th pick overall was in the NHL 4 years after his draft year. Wheeler was 22 his first NHL season. Big guys take some time .
On defense.
Morrissey RD1
LD2 - Pionk
Samberg Poolman
Dahlstrom
Heinola Chisholm Stanley
Dahstrom is huge 6-4 232 and is only 25... He was pretty awful last year.... but had a broken hand which basically wiped out his season He was behind Bietto and sbisa in the depth chart because of Bietto's scrapiness ...BUT he is signed for 2020-21. He did have a good year 2018-19 with the Hawks... playing 18 minutes a game for 38 games.... not bad for a 23 year old rookie. Hawks signed him to a 2-year one-way deal.. No minor league salary
Belieau was good bottom pairing guy that would be above bietto in getting another contract from the Jets.
Really want the Jets to go after Brenden Dillon 29 years old 6-4 225 and plays with an edge. He is coming off a 3.2 x 5 year deal he signed with San Jose. Put him with Pionk and although Pionk did not play shy having backup on the ice is liable to make him play bigger.
DeMelo is the front runner for the 1 RD but not to get as big a contract as Dillon.

That free ups up 4.2 M extra less the 1M for a back up goalie. so St.L has 5.2 M . They also have 400K that they have to account for because bonuses drove them over the 2019-20 cap. The League is allowing them to take half this year and half the next. Still have to sign Pietrangelo and Dunn . That leave them about 5M short that they have to dump salary for.

Agreed that Dillon would be a vast upgrade, but there is a big problem beyond the defensive corps. Apparently the Jets gave up the most high-quality scoring chances in the league, and that falls on the forwrds at least as much as the d-men. If the forwards are reluctant to peel back in a hurry and pick up their checks in the defensive zone, neither the defencemen nor the goalie are going to look good. Maurice and Chevy are need to make significant changes in this. Laine did start to play both ends of the ice but Ehlers not so much, and he wasn't alone.

I suspect that where there's smoke, there's fire. Laine is a gem, but if Gretzky can be traded, anyone can and Laine is a very valuable asset who might not want to be here any more. The reality is that the team has degraded in each of the past two seasons and is likely due for an overhaul, not a tune-up. I expect some big moves- Chevy has done well overall in the past 10 years, but the clock is ticking.

Absolute BS Frank Seravalli of TSN started this because he need to have something to put up to get some internet hits. Next week he will have Gaudreau and Monahan being traded from Calgary..... which the Calgary media is actually pushing. The only guy on his trade list from ST. L was RFA Dunn. He miss the fact that St.L were forced to trade a 4.2 M goalie and now they are going to have to drop another 5M in salary. There was no one else on the trade list that was close to Laine. If there are teams talking to the Jets about Laine there must have a 6-10 M player they are willing to deal. The Best other guy on the list was Ehlers. Maybe the Jets could offer Ehlers and their 1st pick for Laine. The Jets don't have to pay Laine his 10M contract until 2022-23 and they will be one of the few teams that will have cap room. That would be just a bump of 3.5 M on what his cap hit is now. If Buffalo is willing to trade Eichel or Edmonton Draisatl, Carolina Aho

Just my opinion but any or all of these players should be gone by training camp: Roslovic Pionk Niku Hienola Perreault And I'm on the fence about Ehlers as he did show some improved playoff performance. A playoff run requires size and grit but don't tell that to the teams they get traded to. Ha!

LOL...why would the Jets get rid of Pionk and Heinola? The Jets need help on the blue line, not to trade them away. We also need a #2 Center.

I base my opinions on what I see during the playoffs. Teams that advance do not have 4 or 5 "small players that shy away from the physical play. An example was Pionk was targeted for physical play and he crumbled. Rosy was a spectator. Niku already shows he gets intimidated during the regular season and why would Heinola be any different. These guys will keep you entertained during the regular season but the whole objective is the Stanley Cup and they won't get us a cup.

Two trade scenarios: To BUF: Laine Roslovic To WPG: Eichel Ristolainen Trade # 2: To CGY: Laine Roslovic To WPG Monahan Andersson 2nd round Draft pick The Buffalo trade makes some sense in that Eichel and Laine are top tier players. Eichel has 6 years at 10M left.... so that takes away the reason for trading Laine as he would be extended for 10x6 ... This trade also leave Buffalo in shambles. Laine- Reinhart-Olofsson is not as good a second line as Laine-Roslovic-Ehlers and it would be Buffalo's first Eichel is more important to Buffalo than Laine is to Winnipeg. Ristolainen has two years at 5.5 left He was their #1 D but they have good young D-men Dahlin Jokiharju Miller, McCabe and Montour. They would jump at Ehlers for Ristolanen. Of interest their 2017 #7 overall draft pick Casey Mittelstadt was jumped into the NHL in 2017-18 and played 6 games - 5 Pts and burnt a year of his ELC so he is a RFA this year.. He spent the second half of last season in the AHL,. Hard to tell if he is broken or needs a change. -------------- Monahan is a slow soft sniper. He would be a strong #2C but not for any shut down assignments. Calgary is heading for the Jets situation on Defense with Giordano aging out and Brodie and Hamonic as UFA. They are losing 3 of their top-4 so they would not want to part with Andersson or Hanifin who are their top-2 going forward. They are also weak at centre without Monahan. If Calgary were to make a run at Laine Lindholm C/RW would have to be part of the deal instead of Monahan. There is nothing on Defense that makes sense. They trade Gaudreau to Buffalo for Ristolainen and a pick and then trade Lindholm and Ristolainen to Winnipeg for Laine and I still don't know if that is enough for Laine. Maybe they throw in Bennett.
