The Toronto Blue Jays have signed pitcher Jose Berrios to a 7 year $131M contract extension with a player opt out after 5 years. The Jays got him at the trade deadline for a high price OF-IF Austin Martin who was the Jays number 1 pick in 2000 4th overall in the draft and Simion Woods-Richardson who is young but had a bad year in the minors last year. The deal is essentially a 6 year $120M extension since Berrios had 1 more year of arbitration. This is a very good deal for the Jays. 20M a year for an almost ace is pretty cheap. Berrios would have been by far the best pitcher on the market next year at this time. He is 28 years old in may so he's relatively young.
Marcus Siemien and Robbie Ray who both had great years are free agents. Ray will likely win the CY Young award. But he is over 30 and has an injury history. Siemien will be 31 and a half years on opening day so getting them signed will be tricky.
A Vlad Guerrero extension would be the nicest thing of all. He's only 23 next year and has 4 years left before free agency. What a monster year he had.
