Note: I have not taken ANY action regarding ANY member since this forum was created -- i.e., we've move threads, etc., but not limited or canceled any members' account. buff33 deleted his account because he didn't like the karma feature (specifically being smited)...he sent me a PM about it which I just read...I wonder if we need to change this feature....
...some possibilities are...
-- no smiting, just exalt -- limit smite/exalt to 1 a day (or less frequent) -- get rid of feature -- keep it the same...
it's supposed to be for fun, but...

I'm not hugely for or against this feature, but I don't think it should go. I do think it would work well to show who has "credibility". I.e. on jetsowner, I'm assuming jetsfan88 and other people like that would have had big karma points for giving us good information before it was public. That would be a nice feature, other than that I don't care if my karma is + or -... I'm not sure why anyone would quit the site over it!

It's a reputation feature that many boards have some form of. I'm not sure why anybody would "smite" him based on his post, but quitting the board because of it is more than a little bit over the top. You have to have a little bit thicker skin than that to participate in most forums. It would be nice if we could see who was "agreeing or disagreeing" with posts, but other than that, I say leave it as it is.

Smite is such a harsh sounding word. It promotes negativity just thinking about it. "Agree or Disagree" would be a little more neutral. The idea of having it is great though. Well we all know that this person who quit after one "disagree" is definately Not Woofers.

...it is not an agree vs disagree with a post feature...it's a reputation feature...there are only a few ways we can change it...
here are the changes we can make...
- get rid of feature (easy)
OR (generally requires adding certain code, not simply me clicking on a button)
-- change words "exault", "smite" and "karma" to something else... -- disallow "smiting"...lowest point total is "0" -- limit frequency of members ability to "exalt" or "smite" (for example, only 1 per day)
We cannot have a feature that indicates who did it to who...
We could get rid of feature and add a "like" or "dislike" button for posts...but that is not the same...it doesn't follow a member...

Limiting the lowest to zero would be a good idea. You can't have Negative credibility anyways lol.
What about changing to Like and Dislike? People will like credible posts, and dislike junk threads or trolling...

He deleted his account based on that? Holy. Are some of us a little sensitive? If you get offended on your "smite" or "exalt" levels, then I think you're being a little paranoid and geeky, in my opinion. You could say the same about the WFP site which now allows you to give thumbs up or down - same principle as this.

I'm not sure why the feature is needed at all. I don't really look at it that often to be honest.

I'd vote to can it. These karma points have nothing to do with credibility. Over at Jetsowner we all knew who had something worthwhile to say and who didn't. I've seen some people who haven't said a whole lot on this forum get some high karma points whereas a few folks who DO post good stuff dwindle around zero. (and no, I'm not talking about me.)

The feature is a little childish if you ask me.
With that being said I could careless if if my karma was +100 or -100.

I think it's too often used when disagreed with. i corrected someone on a post once about the actual letter of the law in regards to scalping. They called me wrong several times so I presented them with the actual wording with a link to the Manitoba goverments website citing the law. They in turn smited me 4 or 5 times for proving that they were in fact incorrect.
I think its pretty useless. i don't take anyones post more or less seriosuly based on what their karma rating is.

Yeah, it has no real value. It can be gamed - someone could create a hundred accounts and smite whoever they wanted, no matter what the limit is. As long as people understand that, it can stay. If it causes an uproar, it should go. That said, dude should have thicker skin. Newsflash - sometimes there are idiots on the internet.

I like it because I'm shallow and sad and at the time of my typing this I have +6 from 43 posts. That's an amazing average except for jschmoe who has +2 from 6 he is the Ted Williams of karma. But the urge to kill myself is dropping. All kidding aside, I think it can be a useful feature. Lots of karma plus lots of posts equals respected poster with a vested interest in the health of the site. I don't necessarily think it's prone to spamming like in Cheswick's example. When you consider the time some of these arguments (they all look like arguments) to actually think up, type out, wait for a response, read, process and reply to it, clicking the smite tab is probably the easiest, least time-consuming part of the whole ordeal. And if you're in something like that, well, it's only to be expected from the other guy. Not to mention outsiders reading the whole thing and thinking it's a stupid/good topic. Bad karma may not necessarily indicate the poster is an idiot with ideas contrary to the tone of the board, just someone who can be confrontational or argumentative. I see the downsides to it, but ultimately I like it. One thing I do like is the 'like' or 'dislike' tab to specific posts. I HATE HATE HATE clicking on a topic I was interested in, only to see 20 responses that say stupid Crap like 'well said' or '+1' or 'this' before I get to the next actual response.

*Must word post correctly, if not then smites* All due respect to the OP but, is this a serious discussion? C'mon, someone actually deleted an account because of an anonymous online forum rep number? ETA: I vote STAY. It's just a game folks, not real life. If you don't like it, don't participate. EETA: I like the "star thingy" under the username myself, but hey, small things amuse.... lol

Keep it, have fun. If someone is deriving real personal gratification from their karma and gets driven to dispair by a smite then they have bigger problems in life than this forum. Of course, I say this as someone who's a blatant karma whore. And a bad one at that, apparently.
