Bouchard (04:36 3rd) Goal: Man: Hawryluk L (24 shots, 20 saves), Harkness (19 shots, 16 saves), MRU: Sims (19 shots, 19 saves) This game featured a fast-paced and entertaining 1st period, but in the 2nd period the Bisons fell apart. Riley Sawchuk himself had a hat-trick for the Bluegars. During that period, the Bisons seemed to lose all confidence and basically threw in the towel. Without leading scorer Brett Davis, the Bisons never mounted consistent offence all series. Of note, Davis has scored 4 goals in 3 games for Team Canada in the Universiade. However, it seems possible to me that neither Regina, nor Manitoba, nor MacEwan will beat anybody other than one another or Holy Trinity. Regina has no such games left on their schedule. U.B.C. Without him the top line has faltered and there is not miuch chemistry, due in part to the injury situation as well as Davis‛s absence. The last series these teams was wild. The Bisons were unlucky to go pointless. However, since that time UBC has found goaltending, and Manitoba‛s has come and gone. The Bisons have now fallen to 7th place, however still have the inside track on the 6th playoff berth. That‛s because there exists a strong chance that none of the bottom four will win a game against one of the top five. I know that even Holy Trinity did win a game against MRU, but that sort of result is not at all to be expected very often. The game seemed to tilt in the favour of one side at a time. The Bisons jumped to a 2-0 lead, fell behind 3-2, the rotated goals until an empty-netter put it away. This was the only good game of the weekend so far. The other scores so far are 9-2, 8-2, 7-2, and 6-2. Details follow. They have started the new year on a six-game losing streak (seven overall). The last four games have been played without Brett Davis, who was off being the leading goal-scorer for Team Canada winning a gold medal at the Universiade. His addition should make a big difference here. Of note, the Bisons trail MacEwan and Regina by a point. However, other than these games against Holy Trinity, it is fairly likely that all three teams in the "race" could go winless. The Bisons really need all four points up for grabs. If so, they will likely have a lot of wiggle room for a playoff berth. Combined with Regina‛s 2 points and MacEwan‛s one point, the Bisons not only have to win the Saturday rematch, they will have to defeat Calgary and/or Alberta. The Herd led 3-0 early, 3-2 after the 1st, 6-3 after the 2nd, and 7-4 with less than 14 minutes to go. Two late goals for Holy Trinity perhaps made the score look closer than it really was. Still hard to overlook those 3 shots in the 3rd period. This was extremely chippy. Holy Trinity had two 4-minute penalties, and the Bisons had one 4-minute and one 5-minute. The so-called race for 6th place is one where a single upset win could well tip the balance. Last weekend, Regina picked up two points against Saudi Alberta and MacEwan got a point in British California. So if the Bisons can end the Dinos‛ 19 game win streak they could vault into the playoffs. Each side will rely upon certain PPG players. The Dinos have Riley Stotts (32 points), Jake Gricius (30 points), and Max Patterson (24 points), all in 24 games. The Bisons counter with Brett Davis (29 points in 20 games, plus 7 goals and 5 assists in 7 games at Universiade) and Devon Skoleski (26 points in 23 games). The Bison goaltending has ranged from sub-standard to average, and it better be average or better if they want to steal away some points this weekend. This is a home-and-home battle for glory in banjoland. The Banjo-Mutts have looked at times like a potential contender, and then like also-rans at others. Will Mr. Slate take the team out on the town for a celebration? If so, maybe the Bisons can steal the point they need for a playoff berth. February 10: MONKEYS PUT BISONS ON EDGE OF ELIMINATION ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 4 MANITOBA BISONS 1 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofA: Team Website ➤ UofM: MHKY: Golden Bears top Bisons 4-1 (with boxscore) ➤ UofM: "Servant leader" Mike Sirant reflects on 30-plus years with Bisons hockey ➤ UofM: Busy weekend for men's hockey includes seniors night, Mike Sirant appreciation and much more ➤ UofM: Hayden Ostir and Julia Arnold are Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week Each side is involved in one of the two 3-way races on this final weekend of the regular season. The Evil Monkeys are in the race for 2-3-4 where they hold a 1-point lead over UBC and MRU. The Bisons are in the race for 6-7-8 where Regina and MacEwan are tied with a 2-point lead over the Bisons. Friday night‛s results left everything intact. For the Bisons to be successful, they must win Saturday afternoon‛s rematch and both the the Banjo-Cats and Family Guys must lose in regulation. If my guess is correct, that would leave the Apes in 4th (if they lose in regulation) or 3rd (if they lose in overtime). A Monkey victory, however, assures them of 2nd and a bye to the semi-finals. Here are the tie-breaker rules: Hopefully they‛ll bring back the Timbits between periods feature on Saturday. They‛ve gotten away from that this year. Here‛s how the game went. Quick SummaryAlta: D. Lategan (14:54 1st), M. Fonteyne (08:07 2nd), M. Fonteyne (03:32 3rd), T. Preziuso (18:36 3rd) Man: C. Hartje (19:27 2nd) Goal: Alta: Kruger (19 shots, 18 saves), Man: Harkness (36 shots, 33 saves) The Herd played a pretty solid game. They utilized the traditional blueprint to beat the Monkeys, i.e. hit them lots, and let them take a lot of shots from outside the slot area. The weakness was a powerplay that went 0-for-6 with few grade A chances. At the end, they moved Hartje back to the blueline and condensed the forwards. Since coach Mike Sirant is retiring at the end of the year, they had a pre-game ceremony for him. My expectation is that this will help the team next year. Not that I expect Barry Trotz to return to the campus, but the team is in dire need of some renewal. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 3 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MRU: Team Website ➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Lose 3-2 to Cougars (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMRU: M. The Bluegars, Monkeys, and T-irds have to beware of the Banjo-Mutts ensconced in 5th place. The Bluegars would need help to jump out of 4th place. CALGARY DINOSAURS 8 MACEWAN GRIFFINS 1 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofC: Program wins record up for grabs against MacEwan ➤ UofC: Dinos reach new heights with 24 wins in a single season (with boxscore) ➤ MacU: Graduating Seniors Q&A: Correale, Oszytko, Reagan, Roach and Trott reflect on careers ➤ MacU: Griffins' playoff hopes come down to one game after tough home loss to Dinos (with boxscore) Quick SummaryCalg: M. Appelt (06:20 3rd) Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (13 shots, 12 saves), MacU: Davis L (32 shots, 26 saves), Parkinson (17 shots, 15 saves) Looking at these stats, it looks like Bedrock U is poised to hit 25 straight wins on Saturday. I see that Mac‛s #1 goaltender (Abel) was not dressed for this one. The Family Guys would lose a 2-way tie-breaker with Regina or a 3-way tie-breaker with Manitoba thrown in. So they need at least a point, and some help, on Saturday. REGINA COUGARS 3 U.B.C. Both sides were the same both nights, except that the Bisons used Chase Hartje as a forward for two periods on Friday. Here it is: MANITOBA Goal 1 Harkness - 34 Hawryluk Defence 16 Hartje - 6 Dyck 27 Gottfried - 8 Toth 5 Schioler - 4 Malchuk 2 Stewart Forwards 10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 11 Ostir 18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso 14 Keane - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab 20 Apetagon - 29 King Scratches 35 Murphy - 12 Patrick 13 Sutter - 19 Arpin - 23 Fawkes - 26 McCorrister ALBERTA Goal 30 Kruger (35 Berlin) Defence 8 McLeod - 6 Freadrich 22 Sakowich - 3 Sexsmith 7 Plouffe - 40 Platz Forwards 23 Smallwood - 17 Fonteyne - 10 Prokop 11 Preziuso - 18 Hughes - 64 Volcan 12 A Hall - 14 Florchuk - 9 J Hall 37 Trolley - 29 Paterson - 15 Lategan Scratches 1 Bennett - 31 Schneider 5 Davidson - 26 Wolski - 27 Savenkov 13 Fincaryk - 16 Wiebe - 19 MacGregor The TSN Turning Point on Saturday occurred 14 minutes into the 2nd period when the Evil Monkeys were leading 3-2 and the Bisons appeared to have a shot. The Monkeys dumped the puck into the Bison zone and goaltender Simon Harkness came out to play it and tried to shoot it behind the net and around the glass. Instead he shot it IN his net, with nobody around, making the score 4-2. Not giving up, the Herd came out on the next shift and created mayhem in the Monkeys‛ zone, hitting a goalpost and a crossbar in the process. However, the next Ape shot was a low danger shot which trickled under Harkness to make it 5-2. Back-to-back unassisted goals, and that was all she wrote. The remainder of the game was simply playing out the string. These teams will play the 4-5 series in Calgary. I‛m not sure how the Banjo-Mutts‛ goaltenders looked, but these numbers are alarming. Nolan Yaremko scored his 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th goals of the season. The Bluegars miss out on a quarter-final bye by one point and must surely be looking at those points dropped to MacEwan and Holy Trinity late in the season with a great deal of regret. The Bluegars had late losses against MacEwan and Holy Trinity, which cost them a first round bye. The Bluegars outscored their opponents 119-65, and Sask barely edged their opponents 91-90. The Mutts have shown flashes of brilliance, so cannot be counted out. REGINA COUGARS (8-17-3, 11-20-5, OHT35 #29) U.B.C. At home, Regina lost 6-1 and 3-2 in OT. and on the coast last weekend they lost 6-3 and 4-1. UBC is riding a 12-game winning streak. Regina enters on a 1-6-1 skid. The stats over the last three years really favour UBC, however there was a time when these teams were fighting in the sub-.500 segment of the standings.
