He's small but lots of great players have been. As long as you don't have a team of smurfs.

The Hawks it is ! I don't mind that. Maybe because they were my original six team pre- expansion.

Perfect timing.
$23 million in cap space opens up, as Kane and Toews are gone.
Blackhawks are in a good position to start another dynasty.

As a Blackhawk fan I hate to say this but this was totally rigged. Before commercial break the ESPN announcer revealed Columbus had the number 3 pick before Daley flipped over the card. Toews is probably retiring(and management says he won't be given a new contract) and Kane is gone though maybe now he will return. Attendance was way down and the Blackhawks can't be shown on TV anymore in the US. They magically get the number 1 pick for a generational talent to go along with a crap load of other picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Now they Blackhawks can to put in every winter classic etc... for the next 15 or so years. We are very close to a Carolina/Florida eastern finals which will have a rating of literally 5 people watching. LOL It was beyond obvious this would happen. The Blackhawks and maybe Rangers are the only teams that can draw TV ratings in the US.
Next week the NBA will out do the NHL and rig their draft for the Chicago Bulls which have a 1.8% change at the number 1 pick. The NBA has a similar generational talent a 7'3 guy from france the likes of which no one has ever seen.
NHL/NBA are faker than wresting

Blackhawks have the number 1 and likely 19 pick this year(assuming the Maple Leafs don't come back from 3-0)
4 2nd round picks 2 3rd round picks
Next year they have
2 1st round picks their own and Tampa's 2 in the 2nd their own and Vancouvers
2 in the 3rd round their own and Ottawa's
From what I understand the Blackhawks already have a top 10 farm system since they have 2 number 1 draft picks last year (Kevin Korchinski/Frank Nazar) plus Lukas Reichel

Pro sports should do away with the lottery system. Supposedly they are suppose to prevent teams from tanking. The Blackhawks tanked as hard as a team can possibly tank trading away 24 year old Alex DeBrincat. The NFL is so popular they don't need to pull crap like this and don't have a lottery system since it don't matter much which market it's stars play in. MLB just added the lottery system last year. Every time a Ken Griffey type superstar will come out in years the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs or Dodgers are bad they will "magically" win it no matter the odds even if they are like 1%. What lottery systems really are is cheat systems for leagues to place stars in big US markets or in markets in need of a new arena(see Pittsburgh NHL/Sidney Crosby/Edmonton)
In 2007 the Chicago bulls had 1.(something)% odds of getting the number 1 pick since they just missed the playoffs. That year local Chicago kid Derrick Rose a superstar came out. Chicago "magically" overcame the odds and won the pick.

Hockey fans react to NHL Draft Lottery’s epic fail "I'm not saying it is rigged.... but...." If the NHL was hoping to get fans buzzing about its Draft Lottery reveal on Monday night, mission accomplished. If the league was looking for positive publicity, that’s a different story. The San Jose Sharks, the league’s fourth-worst team, were revealed to have the No. 4 pick. To that point, the draft order was chalk and everything was going along swimmingly. That changed with the next pick. Kevin Weekes, who was hosting the broadcast, revealed that the Columbus Blue Jackets, were picking third. “And there is our first change in the order,” Weekes said. “With Columbus dropping to third. So now either Anaheim or Chicago will select first overall. Anaheim has never selected first overall and the last time Chicago drafted No. 1 was when they took future Hall of Famer, Patrick Kane.” But the slight change in the order wasn’t the problem. No, the problem is that while Weekes announced that the Blue Jackets were going to pick third, the card was not turned over. The broadcast went to a quick promo for Monday night’s playoff game between the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers, then went to a commercial. And when the broadcast returned from commercial, the matter wasn’t addressed. In fact, it was ignored. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly wished the Blue Jackets, as well as the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks luck before revealing the card with the No. 3 pick. To the surprise of — well — absolutely nobody, that was the Blue Jackets. It was then revealed that the Ducks would pick second. That meant that the Blackhawks, the NHL’s third-worst team during the regular season, would pick first and will almost certainly end up with generational prospect, Connor Bedard. This was an NHL Network production. In the United States, it was broadcast on ESPN. In Canada, the same broadcast was on Sportsnet. So, in a broadcast done by a league-run network, it was revealed that one of the best prospects in years is going to one of the NHL’s biggest markets and most celebrated franchises. That triggered some suspicion, to say the least. thecomeback.com/nhl/draft-lottery-mistake-blue-jackets-blackhawks.html

This way it looks better on TV. However, Kevin Weekes messed up, and announced Columbus had a dropped a spot, before the draw. Trust me, if the NHL draft was rigged, Edmonton would have never won 4 Draft lotteries. The NHL would have put McDavid in NYC, Philadelphia, or Boston, possibly Detroit. It makes no sense for a small market team to win the lottery 4 times in 6 years.

I disagree with doing away with the lottery system, since teams have tanked before. The most infamous case of this, is when Pittsburgh doing it in 1983-84, to get Mario Lemieux, as the franchise was nearly bankrupt. Ottawa tried it in 1992-93, since the hype towards Alexandre Daigle was so great, but it did not work out so well. There is no answer to appease everyone, but perhaps it's time to let generational players pick and choose where they want to go. With Gretzky, Lemieux, Lindros, Crosby, Ovechkin, and McDavid doing so well that they pretty much have turned franchise around, and made them millions of dollars, they should at least have a say on where they would like to play. I also heard a rumor that Bedard's family was contemplating not reporting to Arizona, if they have won the lottery, due to the franchise being such a Crap show. It's happened in all sports. John Elway is the best example that comes to mind. Jagr also was picked at #5, stating he was going to play in Europe for "a few years" to 4 GM's, however, he really wanted to play with Lemieux, so he told Pittsburgh he would report to the Penguins immediately, so they four higher teams passed on him. With Lindros, Quebec should ahve made a trade right after they selected him, but Aubit was an ass, and ended up making him sit for a year, before trading him to two different teams on the same day.

Oh great, another future obstacle to winning the division. Winnipeg will start to draft in the top 10 again, considering we have virtually no choice but to rebuilt, and Hellebuyck has gone on record saying he has no interest in playing for a rebuilding team (he mentions his age, and the fact that he wants a shot at the cup).

It makes no sense for a small market team to win the lottery 4 times in 6 years. Bettman came from the NBA. They are the original masters at rigging drafts. In the 80's for the Patrick Ewing draft when they picked envelops they froze the New York one so David Stern wouldn't pick it. They wanted Ewing in New York not Indiana because Chicago vs. New York was worth way more than Chicago vs Indiana. They helped Edmonton so much because they wanted a new arena. Edmonton may be tiny but with that arena in a wild Canadian market they became a top 10 ish team in revenue and franchise value. Look at the new big for the NHL tv deals in the United States with TNT and ESPN. They aren't paying that for the Hurricanes and Panthers. To recoup that you absolutely MUST have the Blackhawks on TV a lot. Most of our fans think it was rigged. No to letting players pick where they want to go. You'll make it like the steroid era of baseball when the Yankees and Red Sox won all the time. Every team should have an equal chance.

NBC's old tv deal with the NHL was for $200M per year
The new ESPN/Turner deal is worth $1B per year. That's why last night happened.
Whenever the Chicago and maybe the New York Rangers and Boston go into a rebuild and a generational talent is available they will win the lottery

First off, Edmonton was constructing its arena before McDavid was drafted. I was living outside the city when construction began in 2014. Once again, rigging a lottery so that one of the smallest markets in the league wins it 4 times, makes absolutely no sense. If they were going to rig the NHL draft for a Canadian market, it would ahve been Toronto.

I know construction started in 2014 but they gave them 3 number 1's before construction started. They gave Toronto Matthews. They wanted to give the Oilers McDavid to make 100% sure the arena sold out every night given how contentious getting it passed was. Calgary doesn't always sell out and in the 4th season of the new Edmonton arena WITH McDavid before covid hit they average 17,510 attendance in 34 games out of a capacity of 18,347. Without McDavid it would have been worse and made it harder to sucker Calgary into a new arena too eventually. Toronto while a more valuable franchise than the Blackhawks it isn't as important to the league. People in Canada will watch hockey matter no what give or take a little bit since it's the national sport for the most part. In the US hockey is a distant 4th. The league's main goal since Bettman too over was a big US tv deal. No team helps accomplish that more than the Blackhawks. In the US as long as the Blackhawks are semi decent they are ALWAYS on. Hockey revolves around them here. The league absolutely can't afford for them to be down. With cord cutting it will be hard enough for ESPN and TNT to make it worth paying a billion dollars a year. Look at how the local RSN's filed for bankruptcy of MLB/NBA/NHL teams due to cord cutting. If you were ESPN and paying 1B in a cord cutting world where would you like Connor Beddard? Chicago the number 3 market in the US or tiny Columbus or late game Anaheim? www.cbsnews.com/news/diamond-sports-bankruptcy-bally-sports-network/Here is the NBA's history of rigging drafts and where Bettman learned how to do it. www.cbssports.com/nba/news/nba-draft-lottery-2020-conspiracy-theories-that-make-us-wonder-if-the-lottery-is-rigged/The NBA rigged 3 drafts for small market Cleveland so LeBron could return home from Miami for the fairytale of leading his home town to the title. Watch next week how far the Chicago Bulls move up with 1.8% odds. The french guy is going to either Chicago or Houston. In 2015 Chicago had 21 national TV games during the regular season plus the playoffs. Last year they had 9 and no playoffs. They still had Kane and Toews. How many games could they realistically put on without any remnants of the title team next year? This past season they finished 20th in attendance at 17,167 with an 83.7% capacity with the chance to say goodbye to the 2 title hero's. Chicago made $5.2M in new ticket sales in less than 24 hours since the lottery. www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/37589110/blackhawks-ticket-sales-connor-bedard-lottery-win
