Links: ➤ MacU: Griffins find late success but it's not enough to overcome slow start in loss to Huskies (with boxscore and video) Goaltender Ashton Abel was coming back from injury for the Mythical Mutants. October 7, 2023: BISONS SKUNKED IN U.S.A. MANITOBA BISONS 0 NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING HAWKS 10 Links: ➤ Summaries: UND ➤ UofM: Team Website ➤ UND: NOTES: No. 7/8 North Dakota to open 2023-24 season with exhibition vs. Manitoba ➤ UND: No. 7/8 North Dakota rolls to 10-0 exhibition win over Manitoba (with boxscore) I was listening on-line to the radio broadcast. It was 2-0 when I left to pick up some Chinese Food, and 7-0 when I returned. It was 0-0 after the 1st, and 7-0 after the 2nd. The goaltending of Kolby Thornton held the game scoreless for 20 minutes. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 5 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MRU: MHKY: Cougars lose 5 - 2 to Golden Bears ➤ UofA: Team Website Quick SummaryAlta: A. Holmes (17:25 3rd) Goal: Alta: Kruger (28 shots, 26 saves); MRU: Sims (20 shots, 15 saves) After eight series thus far in the CW, this is the first one to be split. The Evil Monkeys have to be happy enough to swing in the vines, eat bananas, and throw feces in all directions. Both sides switched goalies from Friday, and maybe that wasn’t a great choice for MRU. The Bluegars are now 3-1-0, and the Monkeys are 1-2-1. TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 3 CALGARY DINOSAURS 6 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ TWU: SPARTANS DROP SECOND OF WEEKEND TO DINOS ➤ UofC: Dinos set U SPORTS record with 27th consecutive win (with boxscore) Quick SummaryTWU: J. Gengenbach (19:54 3rd) Goal: TWU: Berkeliev (53 shots, 48 saves); Calg: Stankowski (18 shots, 15 saves) The scoreboard in this series was not nearly as bad as it might have been. Bedrock U dominated the shot clock, but it still took an empty-netter to quash the hopes of Holy Trinity. The Dinos are in the 1st place log-jam at 4-0-0, and TWU falls to 0-2-0. MACEWAN GRIFFINS 1 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2 (in a shootout) Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MacU: A spectacular save and two posts prevent Griffins from first win in 2-1 shootout loss to Huskies (with boxscore and video) ➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Win Shootout Thriller Against MacEwan (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMacU: E. Strang (03:45 2nd) Sask: J. Ball (01:30 2nd) Goal: MacU: Davis (33 shots, 32 saves); Sask: Ross (24 shots, 23 saves) Both sides switched goaltenders from Friday, and both played well. The shootout did not produce a goal until the Banjo-Mutts scored on the 10th attempt. The Mutts controlled more play than the Family Guys, but this was a big improvement for them from Friday night. The Mutts are now in the 1st place triumvirate at 4-0-0, and MacEwan falls to 0-3-1. U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 5 REGINA COUGARS 4 (in a shootout) Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofR: Team Website ➤ UBC: Team Website Quick SummaryUBC: L. Kindree (18:36 1st), C. Douglas (16:44 2nd), S. Schmidt (08:00 2nd) Goal: UBC: Schwebius (19 shots, 15 saves); Reg: Meger (57 shots, 53 saves) No game stories are posted yet, but this one had quite an ending. The Banjo-Cats built a 4-1 lead, despite being out-shot. A late 2nd period goal gave the T-irds an opportunity for a comeback. They out-shot the Banjo-Cats 19-2 in the 3rd period, and tied it up. At least the Kittens got a bonus point, giving them a 0-2-2 record. The T-irds are in that 1st place bundle, at 4-0-0. Although the score was the same, the play was much different. The Bisons were a lot more aggressive, both physically and by increased offensive focus. The failed 3rd period powerplay was your TSN Turning Point. Had the Bisons scored to make it a 3-2 game, they were right in it. Their aggressiveness with the puck hurt them as a blue-line turnover gave the Moose a 2-on-1 break where Nicholas Jones notched his 2nd of the game. From that point onward, the Bisons never raised much of a fuss. By the way, UND will not host the Bisons next year. They will play Augustana, a new Division I team from South Dakota, due to changes in NCAA rules which allow a pre-season exhibition game against Division I, II, or III or ACHA teams. I think the team was embarrassed this year. I overheard one player saying words to the effect of “We didn’t play. We just looked at the crowd.” The linked stories say who cleared waivers to go from the Jets to the Moose, and those sent from the Moose to the ECHL. Those sent down from the Jets were forward Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, defenceman Kyle Capobianco, and goaltender Collin Delia. None were eligible to play against the Bisons. Those sent to the ECHL were forwards Danny Katic, Keaton Jameson, and Ryan Foss, defenceman Darick Louis-Jean, and goaltender Dante Giannuzzi. As a bonus for many of the several little kids in attendance, the Jets practice ended during the warm-up. I saw the newly re-signed Mark Scheifele and another player I did not recognize signing autographs as they walked across to the dressing room. Also, former Moose Cory Schneider retired today at the age of 37. OUT EAST Mon Oct 9 Guelph 4 R.I.T. In Manitoba, UBC won 8-7 and 6-4 and in British California they won 6-4 and 5-2. The T-irds looked really good against the Evil Monkeys, and decent against Regina. The Bisons seem to start slow every weekend, and then build. They improved as play went along last weekend, when they faced superior opponents from the AHL and NCAA. On Monday afternoon the Herd had two very good periods against the Moose. It comes down to Kolby Thornton in goal. If he’s on, they have a good shot. If not, well ... with 7 goals scored per game last year, they still would have gone 1-3. I’ll be watch to see if Ryan Gottfried is able to play on the Bison blueline. IMO he’s their best defender and his absence at the end of their 3-2 loss to Sask and last weekend hurt them. In CW news, UBC’s Liam Kindree was player-of-the-week last week, with 2 goals, 4 assists, and a shootout goal. Also, the CW is altering formats in most sports. For Men's and Women's Hockey, here’s what they said: I have no clue what that means. In this Battle of Edmontown, the Family Guys host Friday and the Evil Monkeys host Saturday. I do not recall the Apes looking so sub-standard to start a season. A 4-4 pre-season and a 1-3 regular season is not awe-inspiring. That said, they did not pad their schedule with weaker opponents. Of course, these teams faced off in pre-season. Otherwise the Monkeys faced their four toughest conference opponents. Both games go at 7:00 MDT/8:00 CDT. Holy Trinity’s four pre-season wins were over BCIHL teams, so let’s not get too excited. Until they show otherwise, their opponents will be thinking “we need these four points” every weekend. Both games in this series are evening games. I saw the last half of the game and the Bluegars played a sound defensive game. The Bluegars took a 2-0 lead about 8 minutes into the 3rd period, after which they made no pretense of shooting for a hat-trick. After leading on the shot clock all night, it ended up 28-28 when the Dinos outshot them 13-4 in the 3rd. So rest those record books. Any winning streak record will not be set until 2024-25. Friday’s lineup listed forward Michael King on the blueline, but that was not the case on Saturday. By the middle of the 1st period, the Bisons had a 2-0 lead. The T-irds chipped away at Kolby Thornton and built a 4-2 lead. An empty-netter salted it away. The Bisons fall to 0-3-1. Another road trip awaits the Bisons next weekend, to Edmontown where they will face MacEwan. Meanwhile, UBC have a good chance to start 8-0-0 when they face Holy Trinity. Florchuk (12:16 3rd) Goal: MacU: Davis (50 shots, 44 saves); Alta: Berlin (15 shots, 12 saves) This one started at 8:00 CDT, the same as the Battle of Calgary which gained my attention. In a statistical oddity, the Evil Monkeys led 5-1 after two periods and then outshot the Family Guys 23-4 in the 3rd. However, Mac scored twice early to make it somewhat interesting. Despite losing some blue-chip talent, the Bluegars have it together in the early going. The Dinos are now 5-1-0 and the Bluegars are 4-2-0. They led 2-1 entering the 3rd period before the Banjo-Cats hit the moonshine and rallied for the win. The result was hanging in the balance when an empty-netter put it away. I saw the game from mid-2nd period onward. Holy Trinity was trying to keep it tight and did hang in there, tied 2-2 after two. It was all T-irds in the 3rd period and the outcome was not really in doubt. You might have thought the Blue Jays were playing, because this was largely a no-hitter. In any event, the Bisons had their chances but could never cash in. Hayden Ostir himself had three breakaways. October 21, 2023: SATURDAY MORNING LINKS Only the Banjoland game stories were posted Friday night. Here are the rest, with the late Thursday stories from British California thrown in. The Presto Sports summary for the Bison game is also linked. Links: ➤ Summaries: CW Presto ➤ UofM: MHKY: MacEwan shuts out Manitoba 5-0 (with boxscore) ➤ MacU: Strang first Griffin to net a CW hat trick, Abel gets first shutout as Griffins blank Bisons (with boxscore and video) Links: ➤ UofC: Dinos falter late at the Drake (with boxscore) ➤ UofA: Sexsmith caps wild comeback with OT winner (with boxscore and video) Links: ➤ UBC: T-Birds win program record seventh straight to start the season (with boxscore and video) ➤ TWU: SPARTANS OPEN HOME-AND-HOME WITH TIGHT LOSS TO T-BIRDS (with boxscore) CW REGULATIONS On October 12th, the CW announced format changes, without there being a whole lot of definition behind it. Here’s what the announcement said: So I rummaged through the playing regulations. Those only contained this year’s material. But I did find out that: 1. The regulation on providing goal judges has been deleted. 2. Teams are supposed to provide game sheets for non-conference games, yet those are only occasionally uploaded. Here is the rule: 3. I saw the Women’s Soccer Format, which looks like a blueprint for men’s and women’s hockey. (BTW Manitoba, Winnipeg, and Brandon do not play CW men’s soccer.) My guess is that each year two or three Alberta teams will join UBC and Holy Trinity in the Pacific Division, and the other team(s) will join Regina, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in the Prairie Division. For playoffs, maybe they’ll use the CFL format where the 4th place team in one division could cross-over to the other if warranted.
