Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to see either of the first 2 games, but maybe better to just wait for the BOJA summary and save myself the pain of watching what sounds like the first 2 periods were. Sounds like a very entertaining 3rd and OT though. Maybe young Jets just needed to get the rust out and are primed for 3rd game against the Flames today at noon. Go Jets Go!

GAME 3: WINNIPEG JETS VERSUS CALGARY FLAMES
The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames young stars faced off on Monday with a rather strange 10 am (Pacific) start time. Both franchises are coming in with a 1-1 record, but they have had opposite results against their opponents. While the Jets lost to the Oilers and won a comeback victory against the Canucks, the Flames lost to the Canucks and won a tight physical 3-2 game versus the Oilers. Winnipeg's coaching staff decided to give Zhilkin a rest today, allowing Caron to get back into the lineup. They also kept physical RD Bauer out of the lineup, which might be a mistake against a large & physical Calgary squad. While the feed from the Calgary Flames site is pretty much as good as TV, the announcers aren't overly adept at naming who the Jets players are. So, here is what I think the forward lines are today:
McLennon*/Lambert/Torgersson Barlow/Lucius/Chibrikov Levis/Julien/Caron* Golder*/Nikkanen/Ford*
Milic got the start in a back-to-back situation, however Winnipeg's plan is for DiVincentiis to play the second half of today's game. From the opening puck drop, the Jets seemed to have more "bounce in their steps" as the squads went back and forth for the first 5 minutes. The first line got caught on a long shift and this was made worse by an icing call. Lambert lost a draw clean and Calgary quickly moved the puck across the ice, allowing a Flame to step in a beat Milic glove-side to give them a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. Shortly after, Lucius intercepted a pass at the offensive blueline and drew a hooking call on the resulting rush. Lucius won the draw and the Jets had possession when McLennon took a cross-check at the side of the net, giving Winnipeg a 1:47 five on three PP. Once again a won face-off allowed the Jets to set up and get many chances: ⦁ Chibrikov walked right in off the opening face-off win and hit the crossbar with a snapper. He quickly followed that up with another two shots from in tight. ⦁ Barlow 1-timer just missed high. Chibrikov 1-timer wide. Barlow 1-timer hit iron. ⦁ Lucius & Torgersson denied on quality looks. With the 5 on 3 time dwindling, Salomonsson wristed a shot through traffic (Torgersson) and the puck seemed to change directions slightly to beat the Calgary goalie to tie the game up at 1-1. Winnipeg couldn't do anything with the short 5 on 4 besides a long point shot. The Jets hit another post (Levis) before the Flames start a period of push back: ⦁ Milic made a nice blocker save on a shot from the face-off circle. ⦁ Nikkanen blocked a 1-timer. Chibrikov got in the way of a point shot. The Jets' 2nd line had a chance on a counter-attack, Lucius turned away. 1st line followed up with a rush, nice give-and-go passing in combo w/ Lambert almost sprung McLennon (hooked, but no call) in all alone. Winnipeg lost another d-zone face-off, forcing Milic to make a quick reaction pad save. Milic turns aside a 1-timer with his blocker. During an offensive zone shift by the 2nd line, Chibrikov took a cross-check and the Jets went on a PP with 1:50 to play. Lambert set up McLennon for a 1-timer that couldn't beat the Flames' goalie. Lucius dangled with the puck from the corner and almost slid it across the goal mouth to Golder, but it was broken up at the last second by a defensive stick. Period ended tied at 1-1, with the Winnipeg Jets controlling more of the play (no idea on shots, but WPG had quite the advantage after the 1st).
The teams felt each other out for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd, with neither giving up any high quality looks. A bad gamble by Lundmark in the neutral zone led to an odd man rush, but again Milic's blocker took care of things. Chibrikov & Lucius combined on a rush and set up a mid-slot chance that was denied by the tender's glove. The Flames Lipinski won another clean draw in the o-zone and once again it ended up helping them beat Milic to take a 2-1 lead (point shot with a 2 foot rebound that Milic couldn't beat the Calgary player too) with 14:30 left in the period. Barlow was hauled down in the offensive end, giving Winnipeg another PP. Early chance by Lambert off a face-off win, but after that the team was a bit sloppy. Late in the advantage, Chibrikov pulled the puck out of a battle along the end boards, skated in front of the net and when he was about 3 feet away, he snapped a shot by the goalie's glove and into the top corner to tie the game up at 2-2 with 11 minutes remaining. (CGY has allowed 7 PPG against, worst in the tourney) At the midway point of the period, DiVincentiis entered the game to replace Milic, while the Flames did the same with their goaltenders. Barlow got a bad break when he was called for a one-handed hook to give Calgary their 1st PP of the game (2 for 9 in tourney). The Flames won the draw and controlled the puck, setting up a 1-timer. Salomonsson was whistled for a penalty to give Calgary a long 5 on 3. Another lost face-off allowed the Flames PP to set up. A 1-timer was blockered by DiVincentiis and the Jets were able to briefly clear the puck. Flames got set up again and took advantage of the space with a lovely tic-tac-toe passing play, allowing a tap in to a wide open net. Calgary up 3-2 with 8:22 to play. With 7 minutes left, the shots were 23-19 in favour of Winnipeg. Kniasev jumped into the low slot and was almost rewarded with a pass, but a good stick interrupted things. A bit of back and forth play before the Jets took a tripping penalty with a minute to play. DiVincentiis made a big glove save (high slot) and then recovered from a missed shot that bounced off the boards to provide another scoring chance with a pad save. Period ended with Calgary having the edge in shots (25-24) and the lead (3-2).
The 3rd period opened up with end-to-end action, leading to an early save from DiVincentiis on a cross-ice pass & shot. Caron sprung Lambert on a partial breakaway and he tried to go back short-side with his move, but the tender didn't bite. DiVincentiis again came up big with a denial on a low slot shot from Klapka and then on a long point shot through traffic. Salomonsson made a nice block on a shot, kept control of the puck and skated it out of the d-zone. Calgary starting to control the flow of play a bit, aided by their dominance at the face-off dots. Winnipeg got a quality look when Chibrikov & Lucius broke out on a 2 on 1. The small Russian kept the puck, cutting across the mid-slot before snapping a shot off the cross-bar. Lucius almost picked up an assist when he slid a pass to a wide open Lambert, but once again a defender broke it up in time. Julien & Golder had a 2 on 2 with some nice passing, but the eventual shot was deflected wide. Game started to become stop & go, with both squads icing the biscuit frequently (signs of fatique?). Nikkanen made a strong play in the d-zone to intercept a pass, then led a rush up the ice with a dangle at center to buy space. Unfortunately the high slot shot from his linemate was blocked. DiVincentiis made a nice pad save on a 1 on 1 rush, denying a shot from the right face-off dot. Winnipeg finally got the refs to pull their whistles from their pockets in the 3rd, giving them a PP with 5 minutes to play. They couldn't take advantage though, as sloppy passing and miscommunications led to a few off-side calls and no sustained offensive pressure. Too many "prayer" passes in the game overall - i.e. I hope & pray they get through. Calgary sealed things up when Winnipeg opted to pull the goalie on a dump in. The tender was barely at the bench before the puck was crossing his goalline. The Flames tested DiVincentiis a few more times when he returned to his crease. Nikkanen took a cross-check to the back (got up right away), sending him into the boards, with 8 seconds left. Parker Ford jumped the offending Calgary player and the Jets got a short PP out of it. Another lost face-off led to Winnipeg not even touching the puck before the final horn blew on a 4 to 2 loss to the Flames.
BOJA GAME RECON: ⦁ For the most part, the Jets' top two lines had pretty good games. The team had more pep to start the game and created way more chances. 5 posts or so ended up hurting the offense, along with some ill-timed penalties. ⦁ The PP was much improved over the first 2 games (despite their final effort), getting lots of looks and game-tying goals from Salomonsson & Chibrikov. ⦁ Chibrikov was the player of the game in this one. He was a force on both the offensive and defensive side of things. Absolutely beauty of a snipe on Winnipeg's 2nd goal. ⦁ Another strong performance by DiVincentiis, who had no chance on the one shot to beat him. The Flames broadcast wasn't high on talking about or showing the shot count, so not sure how much action he saw (but more than Milic regardless). ⦁ Young guys like Lambert, Lucius, Barlow, & Torgersson were all noticeable out there today as well. While none impacted the game like Chibrikov, the top 6 for Winnipeg played well. ⦁ Kniazev was less involved today, but still made some timely jumps to join the rush or potentially create scoring chances.
BOJA TOURNEY RECON:
⦁ Chibrikov. The 5'9" forward may be worth the $77 I spent on AHLTV for the Manitoba Moose games by himself. It will be nice to see if the Moose keep him with Lucius, as the two have some chemistry. Maybe with a goal scorer like Malott on the other wing since Barlow will be returning to juniors? ⦁ The Moose might also have most of their other top 6 line set up as well, since Lambert and Torgersson seemed to work well together. Maybe sign McLennon to join them? Or is the answer already on the Moose/Jets roster? Harkins? ⦁ I like that Salomonsson is the type of defenseman that optimizes getting his shots through to the net over just powering them towards goalies. He seems to have a knack for getting a fairly low speed wrister through a maze of bodies and was rewarded with a PP goal in this game, after a rebound on a similar shot set up a goal in the game versus the Canucks. The young Swede is definitely more active on the offensive side of things when compared to Lundmark, so you would have to think that makes his NHL ceiling a bit higher. ⦁ The prospect goalie depth is a strength for the Winnipeg Jets. DiVincentiis was pretty dominant in his game & a half and should be primed for another fantastic season in the OHL. Milic faced a barrage of shots in his opening match and was the only reason the Jets had a chance to mount the comeback they did. He wasn't great today, but none of the goals against were "shoulda had ems". Not sure why Winnipeg hasn't signed Milic to a contract yet, as they have 6 open slots at this point. The ECHL Norfolk Admirals only have one goaltender on their roster currently & space to add the young tender, so maybe it will get done in the next couple weeks. ⦁ After what he admitted was a disappointing first game, the Jets' most recent 1st rounder looked a lot more comfortable out there in games 2 & 3. Barlow's talent was displayed with some nice moves and deft passing, but his shot is something to be admired when he gets into a spot to release it. ⦁ With LDs like Ville Heinola and Kniazev possibly on the Moose, the team could continue to get offense from their backend. Even with the loss of Gawanke's scoring touch, Manitoba blueline offense could still be good, especially the left-side if they can slip Chisholm through waivers. The former Shark prospect will be interesting to watch and see how often he has games like he did against the Vancouver Canucks. ⦁ Torgersson was the most consistent forward at the Young Stars Classic, with Lucius a close second. The big Swede consistently put himself in the right place (usually in front of the net) and was rewarded with a plethora of chances. His screens probably played a big part in two of Winnipeg's six goals in the tourney. ⦁ Lambert was great one game, above average another, and average in the remaining match. While not ideal consistency, it at least showed the young Finn can play at an average level consistently. Will be key for him to carry that good feeling he got from scoring and helping the Seattle Thunderbirds to a WHL Championship over to his AHL season. The move to center might not be ideal at the face-off dot, but Lambert was doing his part to be a 2-way player at the position so it might pay off. Winnipeg really needs one of Lambert/Lucius to turn into a top 6 center. ⦁ Lucius wasn't flashy in any of the three games, but his line was typically creating as many chances as they gave up. The young center had his scoring chances and looks to be bigger (one inch and 13 lbs, I recall reading). He has great vision, but think his skating needs a bit more work before he reaches the NHL-level of play. Really liked how he shined with Chibrikov's creativity making more space to work with in the final 2 games.

Yeah BOJA reading your stuff made me think I was back in the old Hot Stove Hockey days. No, I am not that old! But all the important events were so precisely described (how could I tell differently), I could imagine it happening. Thanks for all the excellent work. Now are you available to type out a PhD thesis for me? It's due tomorrow and I don't do the AI ChatBot thing.

When looking at Team Numminen, the top 2 lines may be CONNOR / SCHEIFELE / VILARDI and BARRON / KUPARI / NAMESTNIKOV. My thinking is that this represents the Jets' 1st and 4th lines and Gustafsson is probably the only other player likely to have a true shot at making the NHL team. The other lines I came up with were: BARLOW / LUCIUS / TORGERSSON, JULIEN / GUSTAFSSON / REICHEL, VIEL / NIKKANEN / FORD, & SUESS. With Team Selanne, the top 2 lines I came up with were EHLERS / PERFETTI / NIEDERREITER and IAFALLO / LOWRY / APPLETON, which I think show possible 2nd & 3rd line combos for Winnipeg this season. Jonsson-Fjallby and Harkins are forwards fighting for the press-box spot(s). The final three lines might be: HARKINS / LAMBERT / CHIBRIKOV, JONSSON-FJALLBY / ZHILKIN / LEVIS, & MALOTT / TONINATO / BONGIOVANNI. What does everyone think of this possible forward line-up?? CONNOR / SCHEIFELE / VILARDI EHLERS / PERFETTI / NIEDERREITER IAFALLO / LOWRY / APPLETON BARRON / KUPARI / NAMESTNIKOV With GUSTAFSSON / JONSSON-FJALLBY / HARKINS probably fighting for the one forward press-box spot (assuming Jets carry 8 defensemen).
