Hey guys, I need to pick your brains. As all Winnipeggers know, the local institution, the cornerstone of Winnipeg dining, the ShangHai Chinese Restaurant on King Street closed a few months ago.
Our family, being fourth-generation fans of the restaurant, have been trying to find a reasonable facsimile to the old ShangHai. Someplace that replicated their thick-noodled, handmade wonton, wonton soup. The Golden Dragon dish which made dining worthwhile. Sweet and sour shrimps like no other. Heck, I'd love to order a "Ruddy Mary" from a cocktail menu again.
So, any advice? I'm not looking for the 'BEST' Chinese restaurant in the city, just the one that serves up dishes that are the closest to what ShangHai used to offer.
But if anyone has any suggestions in general for good Chinese in the south side of the city, I'd like to hear it. We've been doing the New Golden Inn on Pembina, just south of Jubilee. They're slow like frozen molasses but pretty good. And they give 10% off for cash.
Let's discuss!

Four Seasons is very good. it is not a place to sit down and eat though. it is a pick up only. you can find it on Fermor, next to the Zellers.

The River Mandarin was my favorite but it was shut down a few years ago.

I've never been to the Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, so I can't say if any places I've been to are similar. However, the Dragon Palace on Portage Ave. (near the Grace Hospital) is one of the best chinese restaruants in mine and many other people's opinion. The reviewer in the Winnipeg Free Press have reviewed it several times and always raved about it.
Along with all the typical traditional dishes in chinese restaurants, they also have a dessert: Fried bananas! Yummy!
I also really like Fortune Cooking on St.James St., and Good Earth on Portage Ave., just west of Polo Park.

Oops, read AFTER I already replied that you were looking for restaurants in the south end of the city. Sorry. Anyways, if you are in the west end of the city those are some suggestions.

Komodo on Cottonwood behind the Mac's is pretty good as well. Always hot and reasonably quick
