October 28: BLUEGARS‛ CARRIED BY SECONDARY SCORING MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 4 MANITOBA BISONS 0 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Special teams and zone time a major factor as Mount Royal beats Manitoba 4-0 (with boxscore) ➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: October 28, 2022 (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMRU: R. Holmes (15:36 1st) , A. Fyten (16:07 1st) , K. Morrisseau (09:48 2nd) , C. Bouchard (10:26 3rd) Man: none Goal: MRU: Sims (13 shots, 13 saves), Man: Hawryluk (50 shots, 46 saves) The good news: The Bisons managed to shut down the Sawchuk/Yaremko duo. The bad news: They sacrificed any offence of their own in the process. Here‛s how they lined up: MANITOBA Goal 34 Hawryluk (1 Harkness) Defence 4 Malchuk - 16 Hartje 12 Patrick - 2 Stewart 27 Gottfried - 8 Toth Forwards 10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso 20 Apetagon - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir 21 Basarab - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun 18 Hooker - 29 King - 13 Sutter Scratches 35 Murphy - 5 Schioler - 6 Dyck 14 Keane - 23 Fawkes - 26 McCorrister MOUNT ROYAL Goal 35 Sims (33 Berry) Defence 25 Aquilon - 5 Ladyman 2 Walker - 24 Jensen 3 Gould - 16 Blake Forwards 23 Yarekmo - 13 Sawchuk - 12 Bouchard 19 Gillisss - 9 Regnier - 11 Fyten 8 Moe - 10 Holmes - 18 Stevenson 28 Rawji - 14 Morrisseau - 26 Power Scratches 3 Pow - 17 Tarzwell - 22 Hakim 27 Senkoe - 34 Farkas The stats show that the Bluegars were 1-for-8 on the PP, however two more goals were scored just seconds after a Bison penalty expired. Hawryluk had a good game in goal and has clearly emerged as the go-to guy. A few years ago, these teams played the heaviest games in the CW where the boards were rattling all game long. It is not like that now. Most penalties were cheap garbage that could have been ignored. Saturday night‛s game is thankfully the last one at The Rink. After that it is back to the fully renovated Wayne Fleming Arena. Including pre-season, the Bisons are now 0-5-0 at The Rink, 0-1-0 at The Ralph, and 7-0-0 elsewhere. The play was relatively even. For the Evil Monkeys, Prokop‛s goals were his 5th and 6th of the season, and Smallwood‛s was his 7th. The Banjo-Cats have nobody with that type of finish this year. October 29: DEPLETED BISONS SWEPT MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 7 MANITOBA BISONS 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Four-goal second period helps Mount Royal beat Manitoba 7-2 (with boxscore) ➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: October 29, 2022 (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMRU: S. Ostir (18:03 2nd) Goal: MRU: Sims (13 shots, 11 saves), Man: Hawryluk (L) (31 shots, 26 saves), Harkness (16 shots, 14 saves) The Bisons did not have enough healthy players to ice a full line-up, and played one short. Dylan Thiessen then left early after a blocked shot, so they were down two players. Last week they had extra defencemen, in this game they were down to five. Rookie Eric Fawkes played his first game. Here‛s how they lined up: MANITOBA Goal 34 Hawryluk - 1 Harkness Defence 4 Malchuk - 16 Hartje 2 Stewart 27 Gottfried - 8 Toth Forwards 10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso 18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir 21 Basarab - 28 Behun - 23 Fawkes 29 King - 19 Arpin - 13 Sutter Scratches 35 Murphy - 5 Schioler - 6 Dyck - 12 Patrick 20 Apetagon - 14 Keane - 26 McCorrister MOUNT ROYAL Goal 35 Sims (33 Berry) Defence 25 Aquilon - 5 Ladyman 2 Walker - 24 Jensen 3 Gould - 16 Blake Forwards 13 Sawchuk - 23 Yarekmo - 12 Bouchard 19 Gillisss - 9 Regnier - 11 Fyten 8 Moe - 10 Holmes - 18 Stevenson 28 Rawji - 14 Morrisseau - 26 Power Scratches 3 Pow - 17 Tarzwell - 22 Hakim 27 Senkoe - 34 Farkas The positive thing about this game is that the Bisons won‛t be playing at The Rink any more. From here on in they will be back at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Including the two exhibition games, the Bisons were 0-6-0 at The Rink. If the Bisons want to pick up points in Edmontown next weekend when they face the Evil Monkeys, they will need some injured players back. Devon Skoleski was back this weekend after missing a game last weekend.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 4 REGINA COUGARS 3 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofR: Team Website (no report yet) ➤ UofA: Team Website - no team stories since October 15th Quick SummaryAlta: T. They were one man short and had just five defencemen. For good news, captain Geordie Keane played his first game of the year and the 3rd period was tied! THE Evil Monkeys were 3-for-7 on the PP, which got them off to an early lead. The game was tied 1-1 with just over 6 minutes to play when the floodgates opened. Saturday‛s rematch was to have been played in Saskatown but a watermain break has forced postponement of that one to November 29th. U.B.C. This series in the Town of Bedrock is an important one for UBC. The teams met earlier, and the standings are now 4 points for the Dinos and 3 points for the T-irds through three games. I was shocked at the margin. The Dinos outshot UBC 14-3 in the 1st period and led 4-0. They started the season losing Friday and winning Saturday for three weekends in a row before sweeping Regina and UBC the last two weekends. That adds up to a 5-game winning streak entering the weekend. Meanwhile, the Bisons are on a 4-game losing streak. This followed a 4-game winning streak. The Bisons are playing at the Wayne Fleming Arena for the first time this season. Maybe this will change their fortunes. They were 0-6-0 at The Rink. Of major concern is the injury list. A full squad is essential if they want to be competitive in this series. Last season these teams faced each other on the opening weekend in the Town of Bedrock, and split. The summaries and stories are in the links. There are plenty of featured players to watch. The Bisons have three Top-20 scorers (Brett Davis, 6-8-14; Devon Skoleski, 4-9-13; and Chase Hartje, 4-8-12), and the Dinos have two (Jake Gricius 8-2-10 and Max Patterson 5-5-10). Although 5-5-0, their five wins have been nail-biters. They have three wins in overtime, one by a goal in regulation time, and one by two goals including an empty-netter. Meanwhile, they have 3 losses by 4 goals and 2 losses by 3 goals. While Mac has 10 points, their opponents have 13. This is with a roster which, on paper, is better than last year‛s and comparable to many recent rosters. There was some line juggling in the 3rd period, notably Colton Veloso was removed from the top line in favour of Hayden Ostir. This was a good move. Veloso is either injured or not fit and has not been able to keep up with his linemates. Ostir was skating much better. Veloso can play a grinding role on another line, where he could be quite effective. Once again, a Bison starting goaltender did not finish the game, as Simon Harkness came on for Rosss Hawryluk to start the 3rd period. The Bisons also had a full roster, so no excuses there. There were three near-fights in the 3rd period in what was generally a cleanly-played game. This could lead to some fireworks in Saturday‛s rematch. Defenceman Evan Toth was scratched, and they played with only five blueliners. I listed the combinations they used. Hartje and Schioler always played LD, and Stewart and Malchuk always played RD. Gottfried was the one who switched. I don‛t know if Fawkes hit the ice as a 13th forward. Bedrock U made one switch (Quigly for Horning on defence). Ross Hawryluk played well in goal in the first two periods, backstopping the Bisons to a 2-1 lead with 34 saves on 35 shots. Unfortunately, the Dinos‛ 3rd period goals were tainted. The first was a slow trickler through the 5-hole, the second was a rebound on a dropped puck, and the 3rd was an empty-netter. The Bison offence was also limited, especially a powerplay with 5 minutes left when they trailed 3-2. The line shuffling was fairly effective. Veloso 's line switch made him play better and improved the first line. He was still on the PP, and that needs some work before next week's MacEwan series which could be for a playoff berth. The Bisons switched to their alternate gold/beige jerseys for this game. Those would be great if they had the logo, rather that the diagonal "BISONS" word-mark. November 18, 2022: BISONS EMPHATICALLY END SLUMP MACEWAN GRIFFINS 1 MANITOBA BISONS 7 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: Well-travelled forward Dylan Thiessen brings wealth of hockey experience to the Bisons ➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons snap six-game skid with dominant 7-1 win (with boxscore) ➤ Mac: Team Website This was a much-needed slump-buster for the Herd. Three players had two goals each to lead the way to a convincing win. Quick SummaryMacU: M. Pasemko (08:47 3rd) Man: L. McCorrister (01:09 1st) , D. Skoleski (16:14 1st) , D. The alleged combined 35 shots in the first period seemed excessive. Here‛s how they lined up: MANITOBA Goal 34 Hawryluk (1 Harkness) Defence 16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk 27 Gottfried- 2 Stewart 5 Schioler - 6 Dyck Forwards 10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 11 Ostir 26 McCorrister - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso 14 Keane - 28 Behun - 20 Apetagon 18 Hooker - 19 Arpin - 29 King Scratches 35 Murphy - 8 Toth - 12 Patrick 13 Sutter - 21 Basarab- 23 Fawkes MACEWAN Goal 1 Abel - 33 Davis Defence 25 Aston - 17 Roach 10 Salame - 13 Schaufler 3 Trott Forwards 23 Gable - 26 Taupert - 27 Oszytko 22 Pasemko - 9 Webb - 19 Kope 12 McLean - 5 Chorney - 18 Correale 24 Mohr - 8 Boyle - 15 Wood Scratches 2 Delorme - 4 Baker - 7 Comrie 11 Brown - 14 Smithies - 16 Strang 21 Appelt - 30 Parkinson The Bisons are largely healthy now. Linden McCorrister came back last week, and scored two goals in this one. Back from the infirmary this week are Mitch Dyck on defence and Dylan Thiessen at centre on the 2nd line. I am not sure how many of the scratches were healthy, but this was the strongest Bison line-up dressed so far this season. Colton Veloso‛s shift to the 2nd line has paid dividends, as he also scored twice. That makes it a 4-goal game for the 2nd line. The 1st line wasn‛t bad either, with Devon Skoleski scoring twice and Brett Davis once. Of note, the Bisons have now played twice in their alternate tan/gold jersey. There was also a very lively crowd, featuring the Engineers‛ Marching Band. They were at the hockey game from the mid-1st period and through the 2nd period. I am guessing they also graced the volleyball games with their presence. For some reason, they were razzing Abel and Davis about their water-drinking. "Abel‛s Thirsty, clap clap clap-clap clap" when he took a drink, and after each goal "Drink Some Water, clap clap clap-clap clap" followed by applause when he did so. I found it amusing. November 19: SWEEP VAULTS BISONS BACK INTO PLAYOFFS MACEWAN GRIFFINS 2 MANITOBA BISONS 7 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons score seven in second straight, sweep MacEwan (with boxscore) ➤ Mac: Team Website This big showdown for a playoff berth turned into a romp. The Bison 6-game losing streak is now tucked into the past, and no giggity giggity for The Family Guys as their streak of 6-consecutive splits comes to an end. Quick SummaryMacU: C. Roach (08:42 3rd) , D. Kope (17:07 3rd) Man: D. Thiessen (00:33 2nd) , H. Ostir (05:37 2nd) , M. Dyck (12:20 2nd) , B. Davis (05:27 3rd) , B. Davis (11:21 3rd) , L. McCorrister (15:30 3rd) , D. Thiessen (17:37 3rd) Goal: MacU: Abel (38 shots, 31 saves), Man: Hawryluk (29 shots, 27 saves) The line-ups were changed only slightly from Friday. The Bisons subbed-in Evan Toth for Sam Stewart on defence, and kept the lines and pairings the same otherwise. For the Mythical Mutants, centre Carter Chorney was injured on Friday and no replacement was available, so they had just 11 forwards and 5 defencemen. The defence had a 5-man rotation as they did on Friday. The forward lines were mixed and matched throughout the afternoon. This marks the mid-point of the regular season for both sides. This was the Bisons‛ final home series of the first semester. They face Saskatchewan next weekend, then have a bye, then it is the exam/Christmas break. The next home games are January 6th and 7th against Regina‛s Banjo-Cats. Of note, each CW team has two opponents they play just once. For the Bisons, those teams are MacEwan and Saskatchewan. This means that in the event of a tie with Mac in the final standings, the Bisons hold the head-on tie-breaker. Colton Veloso has 3 goals and 3 assists in the 3 games since the line shuffling.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD CALGARY DINOSAURS 5 TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofC: Joseph's CW record propels Dinos to ninth-straight win (with boxscore) ➤ TWU: Team Website Quick SummaryCal: C. First, there were two additional non-conference games for the Bisons. On December 30th they are off to Minnesota where they will face the St. Cloud State Huskies (currently 11-3-0). The Bisons split a pair of non-conference games in the Excited States in pre-season, but this should be a tough test. More interestingly, the Bisons and three other CW teams (Sask, Calgary, Alberta) will host Ukraine‛s Universiade team (dubbed "Ukraine U-25 National Team" at Ticketmaster). The schedule is: Dec 30th: Ukraine at Saskatchewan Jan 2nd: Ukraine at Calgary Jan 3rd: Ukraine at Alberta Jan 9th: Ukraine at Manitoba The other teams will be playing at their usual arenas. However, the Bisons will be at the Canada Life Centre (the renamed Jets‛ arena). The linked stories contain links to purchase tickets or make a donation. This series is a fund-raiser for Ukrainian hockey. In last season‛s October series, the Banjo-Mutts played better against the Bisons than any other team all year. They did fade throughout the year, ending with a quarter-final loss against Calgary. This year, they reached their apex against the Evil Monkeys on Oct 21st and 22nd, when they had a decisive 5-2 win and an OTL. Last weekend, they played down a man and were handled by the Bluegars. The Bisons won‛t have sympathy for those who play a man short, having just escaped such a stretch themselves. Have the Herd turned the corner? Last weekend they throughly whipped MacEwan, who split with Sask the weekend before. So we‛ll see. Of note, this is the only series between these teams this year. Holy Trinity led 2-1 after one, The Banjo-Cats scored four unanswered in the 2nd, and then TWU made it a nail-biter with a pair in the 3rd. Eight of the nine goals were therefore at one end of the ice. Do you think the ice was slanted? I tuned in to see the ending of this one after seeing Regina‛s win. The Dinos were really having their way with the Monkeys. Despite trailing entering the 3rd period, the Monkeys were decisively outplayed. The scene shifts to Edmontown for Saturday‛s rematch. Don‛t forget last weekend where a Friday loss was followed by a 9-1 Primate victory on Saturday. MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 3 U.B.C. Saturday Morning Links The later games had no game reports as I posted Friday night, and two (MRU and Alberta) still don't. Links: ➤ UofC: Dinos go top of the league with 10th win in a row (with boxscore and video) In Bedrock, it's yabba-dabba-doo time. They are justifiably happy at taking over first place. Will that still be the case on Sunday morning? Links: ➤ UBC: Clutch goaltending, solid PK key in T-Birds win over Cougars (with boxscore and video) The UBC story is worth a read. Their website appears to be tops in the CW this year. Their win denied the Bluegars a share of 1st place, moved the T-irds into a tie with Sask, and assured the T-irds that they would not be caught by the Bisons this weekend. OUT WEST Links: ➤ BCIHL: Box Score The Vikes scored one more to beat VIU 4-1. It was their first win over someboy other than Logan Lake. This game was in Victoria. Saturday's rematch is in Nanaimo, where they likely have great bars.
