November 26: BISONS EXPERIENCE FIRST SPLIT OF THE SEASON MANITOBA BISONS 3 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 4 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Huskies steal on in the third to split weekend with 4-3 win (with boxscore) ➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Win Earning Weekend Split (with boxscore) This was the Bisons‛ final series of the first semester, and was also their first split series. It was a pretty good one, fast-paced and hard hitting. The Bisons were down a man, missing Jackson Arpin from Friday‛s line-up. Quick SummaryMan: C. Behun (15:15 1st), B. Davis (08:01 2nd), D. Skoleski (19:48 2nd) Sask: J. Kaluski (07:25 1st), C. Petruic (13:35 1st), J. Dmytriw (14:56 1st), J. Kaluski (08:03 3rd) Goal: Man: Hawryluk (38 shots, 34 saves), Sask: Kooy (28 shots, 25 saves) The Banjo-Mutts built a 3-0 1st period lead, the final of which was a trickler between Hawryluk‛s pads which he wasn‛t quite able to reach. The Bisons were very unfortunate to be behind at that point. The goal-posts and crossbar were their enemy. By carrying the play the game was tied after the 2nd period, including a penalty shot goal by Brett Davis. The Mutts were out for real in the 3rd period, outshooting the Bisons 11-3 and scoring the only goal. The Bisons have now finished the 1st semester with a 7-9-0 record and seem to be ensconced in the 6th and final playoff berth. They now break for exams and Christmas. Their next game is a non-conference tilt away to St. Cloud State on Dec 30th, followed by a home series against Regina on Jan 6th & 7th, and an exhibition game against Ukraine on Jan 9th. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 2 REGINA COUGARS 4 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ TWU: JOSS, PENNER SCORE IN LOSS TO REGINA (with boxscore) ➤ UofR: Men's hockey completes weekend sweep over Trinity Western (with boxscore) Quick SummaryTWU: J. Penner (03:41 1st), M. Joss (14:56 2nd) Reg: J. Fletcher (05:06 1st), T. Adams (12:44 2nd), B. Pouteau (06:10 3rd), T. Heidt (17:32 3rd) Goal: TWU: LaBelle (44 shots, 40 saves), Reg: Evanoff (27 shots, 25 saves) I didn‛t see any of this matinee. Needless to say, the Banjo-Cats needed this sweep to keep at least one or two of their nine lives available for future use. At 3-9-1 a major winning streak is needed for the Puddy Tats. Holy Trinity was likely resigned to playing a spoiler role this season. MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 3 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MRU: Team Website ➤ UBC: Team Website Quick SummaryMRU: C. Blake (08:10 1st), M. Ladyman (06:32 2nd), C. Bouchard (13:05 2nd) UBC: J. Wismer (06:35 3rd), T. Rask (09:55 3rd) Goal: MRU: Berry (25 shots, 23 saves), UBC: Schwebius (29 shots, 26 saves) This matinee started at 5:00 CST so I was able to see a lot of it before the Bison game. A split series makes sense here. This win allowed the Bluegars to jump over the Evil Monkeys and into 2nd place. How crazy is that? The Bluegars held a 3-0 lead entering the 3rd and appeared to be cruising. The shots were 24-13 for MRU after two, and 12-5 for UBC in the 3rd, which accurately reflected the play. CALGARY DINOSAURS 3 ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofA: Team Website ➤ UofC: Team Website Quick SummaryCalg: N. King (04:20 1st), Z. Wytinck (17:44 1st), M. Patterson (01:46 2nd) Alta: D. Davidson (14:44 1st), J. Prokop (05:13 3rd) Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (27 shots, 25 saves), Alta: Schneider (22 shots, 19 saves) The 1st place Dinos have opened a 3-point lead over the Evil Monkeys, and a 2-point lead over MRU, atop the CW standings. The 3rd place Evil Monkeys doesn‛t happen this late in the season. I saw the 3rd period after the Bison game was over. The Dinos had a 3-1 lead and were playing kitty-bar-the-door kind of hockey. They had just 3 shots but that doesn‛t matter when you only give up 8. November 29: MAKE-UP GAME IN BANJOLANDOUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD REGINA COUGARS 3 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 4 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofR: Team Website ➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Come From Behind to Win 4-3 over Regina (with boxscore) Quick SummaryReg: R. Stebbings (14:09 3rd) Goal: Reg: Evanoff (33 shots, 29 saves), Sask: Kooy (20 shots, 17 saves) A bonus mid-week game in the CW arose due to postponement arising from a watermain break in Saskatown a couple weeks ago. So we got this game. I missed it because I worked late and watched the Jets annihilate the Colorado Avalanche 5-0. Looks like the Banjo-Mutts still drew 1,000+. The Banjo-Cats held a 3-1 lead entering the 3rd period before their hillbilly brethren rallied. Sask was 3-for-8 on the powerplay. Sask is now 10-4-2 and Regina falls to 3-10-1. The top four teams in the CW now range from 26 points to 22 points.

Preview: December 2-3: BISON BYE WEEK The Bisons get the bye this coming weekend, meaning no games until after Christmas when they make a trip to St. Cloud State on December 30th. Then comes a stretch of three home games in four days to start the new year. Regina Cougars will visit on January 6th and 7th, and Ukraine‛s World University Games team will visit on January 9th. Nevertheless, I have posted links for the Bisons‛ stories and the ones needed to follow along this weekend. They have uploaded a background story one new goaltender Ross Hawryluk, and another nice one about the campus efforts on mental health. By the way, there‛s fundraiser at the Bulldog Event Centre starting Saturday at 7:00 p.m. featuring a whole bunch of young local Winnipeg bands. The Dinos have vaulted into 1st place on the strength of an 11-game winning streak, yet have just a 4-point lead on the 4th place Mutts. I have linked the Huskie Fan site game stories on the Mutts‛ last two games. Max Patterson of Bedrock U received CW kudos for his efforts last weekend, as per the linked story. U.B.C. The Battle of Edmontown is a home-and-home series. The Family Guys shocked with an early season split with the Evil Monkeys. December 3: THREE O.T. GAMES, AND A BAKER‛S DOZEN FOR THE DINOS These games bring the first semester to a close, and three games went into overtime. Who bet on both Dalhousie and Holy Trinity getting their 2nd wins of the season on the same night? And Nipissing nearly joining them? OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD CALGARY DINOSAURS 3 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2 (in overtime)Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofC: Dinos ride into holidays with 13 straight wins (with boxscore) ➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Fall in Double Overtime for the Second Night Against Calgary (with boxscore) Quick SummaryCalg: Z. Tough luck for the Mutts, though. Both games went into double (i.e. 3-on-3) overtime. U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 3 REGINA COUGARS 2 (in overtime)Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UBC: UBC Strikes Early and Often in a 6-1 Victory In Regina (Friday late, with boxscore) ➤ UBC: Jake Lee?s OT winner gives UBC weekend sweep in Regina (Saturday, with boxscore) ➤ UofR: Cougars push UBC to overtime, but lose in extra session (with boxscore) Quick SummaryUBC: S. The one-point weekend is certainly not what the Banjo-Cats needed. If they want to make a serious charge for a playoff berth they will need a fabulous 2nd semester. ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 11 MACEWAN GRIFFINS 2 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofA: Speed kills as Bears top Griffins 4-1 (Friday late, with boxscore) ➤ MacU: Despite tough loss to Bears, Griffins head into break in contention, focused on getting healthy (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMacU: E. Volcan (18:14 3rd) Goal: MacU: Davis (L) (43 shots, 35 saves), Abel (14 shots, 11 saves), Alta: Kruger (23 shots, 21 saves) Once again, The Family Guys played two-men short. However, this was the most one-sided game of the entire CW season so far. Adam Hall of the Evil Monkeys had 9 shots on goal himself (one went in). It is strange that on a night when every other game went into overtime, the cross-town rivals came up with this stinker. MacEwan really needs a holiday break right now. TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 4 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 3 (in overtime)Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ TWU: SPARTANS FALL TO COUGARS (Friday late, with boxscore) ➤ TWU: FULLER SCORES OT WINNER IN 4-3 VICTORY OVER NO. 5 MOUNT ROYAL (Saturday, with boxscore) ➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: December 3, 2022 (with boxscore) Quick SummaryTWU: J. Yaremko (00:25 3rd) Goal: TWU: LaBelle (61 shots, 58 saves), MRU: Sims (19 shots, 15 saves) This is the upset of the season so far. The Bluegars probably had plans of coasting to a victory and prepping for a challenge for first place in the new year. Holy Trinity had other plans, backed up with a fabulous goaltending performance by Isaac LaBelle. Through two periods, it was tied 2-2 even though MRU led 40-16 on the shot clock. The 3rd period was very one-sided. MRU had 21 shots, TWU had 2. Each side scored once, though. Mitchell Joss had his 6th and 7th goals of the season to lead the Spartans, but it was Landon Fuller‛s 1st of the season which won it in OT. No doubt that Holy Trinity will have a joyous Christmas party when they get back home. December 16: CHRISTMAS BREAK NEWS USPORTS v TEAM CANADA TEAM CANADA 5 A.U.S. SELECTS 2
TEAM CANADA 3 A.U.S. SELECTS 2 Here's an oddity. The AUS Selects last played the TC Juniors in 2002. That time they lost 5-2 and 3-2, just like now 20 years later. In comparison, Canada West teams are 5-10-0, OUA teams are 2-13-1, and USports nation-wide teams are 6-5-0. Links: ➤ Hockey Canada: December 11th Summary ➤ Hockey Canada: December 12th Summary ➤ Fandom/Wikia: CWUAA Team Canada Juniors Segment UNIVERSIADE The complete TC roster is at the link. Canada's games start January 12th against Ukraine. The finals are on January 22nd. The Bisons' top player, Brett Davis, has been selected. There are no players from MRU or Alberta on the team. I suspect that invitations were declined. Missing four regular season games could be costly for those teams fighting it out for a top-two placing. Davis will be missed in their series against MRU and UBC. December 30: BISONS END 2022 WITH EXHIBITION LOSS MANITOBA BISONS 2 ST. CLOUD STATE HUSKIES 5 Links: ➤ SCSU: No. 4 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Upends Manitoba in Exhibition Play ➤ Boxscore: SCSU I listened to this game via on-line radio on Friday afternoon. The 1st period was rather hum-drum, the teams evidently suffering from turkey legs. SCSU scored the only goal. Action picked up in the 2nd, with 6 penalties. SCSU scored twice on the PP, and once shorthanded. The Bisons scored one on the PP, and once more just after a PP. The only 3rd period goal was an empty-netter by SCSU. The Bisons return home to play a CW conference series against Regina on January 6th and 7th, and then host Ukraine on January 9th. The Bisons are using their alternate 3rd jersey again.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD TEAM UKRAINE 0 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2 Links: ➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Welcome the Hockey Can't Stop Tour and the U25 Ukrainian National Team ➤ Huskie Fan: "Hockey Can't Stop Tour" begins at Merlis Belsher Place The Ukrainian team is dubbed the "U25 Ukrainian national team". I have not seen a boxscore or summary. However, I did watch the game on CanadaWest.tv, which is streaming the entire tour. Some Ukrainian players had black pants, while others had blue. January 2-3: MID-WEEK REPORT The Bisons are off until Friday, January 6th when they start the second semester at home against Regina with a double-header weekend. Then on Monday, January 9th they will face Team Ukraine at the Canada Life Centre to wrap up Ukraine's Hockey Can't Stop Tour. So in this report, all the news is from elsewhere. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD TEAM UKRAINE 1 CALGARY DINOSAURS 3 Links: ➤ UofC: Dinos open 2023 with Ukrainian U25 National Team ➤ UofC: Calgary packs rink for Ukrainian U25 National Team (with boxscore and video) ➤ YouTube: Dinos' Channel On January 2, 2023, Team Ukraine played game two of their tour. This was a fairly evenly played game, with the Dinos holding the edge in shots by 28-27. Ukraine scored the opener but thereafter were held off the scoresheet. The final goal was an empty-netter by the Dinos. This was the best game of the tour thus far. TEAM UKRAINE 1 ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 5 Links: ➤ UofA: Bears to host U25 Ukrainian National Team on Tuesday ➤ UofA: Full Clare Drake Arena sees Bears top U25 Ukrainian Team On January 3, 2023, Ukraine played game three of their tour. It produced their worst result. If this is an accurate preview of the Evil Monkeys' performance in the 2nd semester, the CW better be ready for them. Ukraine never got on the scoreboard until they were already down 4-0. Ukraine did rally to actually lead in shots, 28-25, by the end of the game. Where finishing touch is lacking from Team Ukraine, the Evil Monkeys have it in abundance. REGINA COUGARS 4 BRIERCREST CLIPPERS 3 (in overtime)Links: ➤ ACAC: Schedule/Results ➤ UofR: Men's hockey adds forward Logan Barlage The signing of Barlage should help the Banjo Cats. He's 6'5" and 210 lbs and peaked at 20 goals in his WHL career. They also lost Tyler Adams, a 5th year forward and WHL grad who had 4 goals and 6 assists in 15 games. He's off to Savannah of the ECHL. In the meantime, they had the one non-conference game on January 2nd, and eaked out on OTW over Briercrest College. This was the only non-conference game for an ACAC team this holiday season. At 5-6-1, the Clippers are much better than usual so far this year. NEWSLinks: ➤ MRU: MHKY: 2022 Mid-Season Review No games for the Bluegars but they have released the linked story on their mid-season outlook. That semester-ending loss to Holy Trinity could sting. It is always odd to wrap Christmas and New Years and suddenly see the end of the regular season closing in quickly. There are just six weeks left in the CW regular season. The Bisons hold the 6th and final playoff spot, while Regina sits in 8th place, 6 points behind. Neither team has any byes left, so each has 12 games left. So anything less than a sweep would pretty much dash the Cougars' hopes. GoBisons.ca has two linked stories on Brett Davis. One for being named to Canada‛s Universiade team and the other for being the WHL grad of the 1st semester. Davis is 3rd in conference scoring (16GP/10G/16A). Linemate Devon Skoleski is 11th (15GP/9G/12A). Defenceman Chase Hartje is 29th (16GP/5G/10A) and Colton Veloso is 33rd (16GP/5G/8A). The Banjo-Cats have three players in the Top 40: Tyler Heidt is 22nd (16GP/4G/13A), Brennan Riddle is 31st (16GP/1G/13A), and Matt Culling is 32nd (16GP/6G/7A). The Bisons will follow this series with a game against the Ukraine Under-25 National Team on Monday at the Canada Life Centre. This is the wrap-up game of their tour of the prairies. This is a home-and-home series. The Bluegars have been teetering on the brink of contender status for a few years now. In my opinion, this is a make-or-break season for them. This series could set the tone for the home stretch. A sweep by one team would boost their fortunes immensely. The Evil Monkeys have been inconsistent, and this is the closest they have come to being in danger of playing in the quarter-finals for a long time. Note that no players on either side are on the Universiade roster. Perhaps a sign that their focus is on the CW regular season. January 6-7: COMPLETE WEEKEND WRAP-UP A busy weekend both inside and outside the rink led me to do one ominbus post for the entire weekend. One team got four points in all four series. Here we go. Saturday‛s loss was more painful, however. It was a tight game all the way, 0-0 well into the 3rd period. When Hayden Ostir scored his 2nd of the night with less than 90 seconds left, it seemed victory was inevitable. However, Friday‛s bad habits resurfaced and two last minute goals by the Banjo-Cats forced OT, then a shoot-out. Ostir appeared to have the winner in OT but it was called off. Next up is Monday night‛s game against Ukraine‛s Under-25 National Team, which should be a lot of fun. Right now it looks like the Evil Monkeys are destined to the quarter-finals (perhaps against the Bisons) and would have to win that plus an away series in Calgary to qualify for the U-Cup. Friday was strange in that MRU had a 5-0 first period lead. Blowing that could have been distressing. I note that the Monkeys started Schneider in goal on Friday, but yanked him after giving up 3 goals in 6 minutes. Berlin finished and was tagged with the loss. On Saturday they were both benched in favour of Kruger. They all have starter-quality stats, but I don‛t think that a CW team can fit three goalies into a 28-game regular season and have a true #1 set for the playoffs. Skoleski (04:03 3rd) Goal: Ukr: D.*Kubrytskyi W (12 shots, 12 saves), B. Dyachenko (7 shots, 6 saves); Man: R. Hawryluk (13 shots, 12 saves), B. Murphy L (10 shots, 7 saves), S. Harkness (9 shots, 8 saves) What a night! I was shocked to see 8,000 people filling the lower bowl of the Canada Life Centre, most assuredly the biggest crowd the Bisons have drawn for a home game. It was clear from the preponderance of blue and yellow flags that most of the fans came from Manitoba's 200,000+ Ukrainian community. The crowd included 1,500 Ukrainian refugees, Dancin' Gabe, Bennie the Jet, Mickie Moose, and Billy the Bison. Everybody was in good spirits in a party atmosphere. The only drawback was that the last-minute ticket sales overwhelmed the arena staff resulting in long line-ups at the entry points. They held back the face-off. Which was good because Winnipeg's Hoosli Ukrainian Men's Chorus sang both national anthems. You have to check them out some time. The video I linked has the CWTV intro followed by Ukrainian play-by-play. The video starts at the national anthems. Team Ukraine is now off to the FISU Universiade in New York State. Bison leading scorer Brett Davis is off to play for Team Canada. (He was not in tonight's line-up.) Canada and Ukraine open against one another on January 12th. The group photo was an integral part of all four games on the tour. The crowd shot was what made the evening special.Lots of flags throughout the stands.

Any points they get are a bonus. They are missing leading scorer Brett Davis (off to the Universiade for two weeks) and dressed one short in last Saturday‛s game. They‛ll need hot goaltending and a couple strong individual performances. Meanwhile, the Bluegars‛ top players declined Universiade invites to participate in the push for a quarter-final bye. ELSEWHERE IN THE CW MACEWAN GRIFFINS (6-12-0, 7-17-1, OHT35 #27) REGINA COUGARS (5-11-2, 8-14-4, OHT35 #25) Links: ➤ MacU: Griffins head to Regina for a series between two teams rallying for a playoff spot ➤ UofR: Team Website These teams are tied for 7th, and are 3 points behind Manitoba for the final playoff berth. It seems unlikely that any of the teams in this race will make up much ground against the top 3 or 4 teams, so somebody needs a sweep of this series. U.B.C. However, the big test for Saudi Alberta will come in the following weeks when they have to face tougher opponents as they try to get back into the race for 1st and 2nd. January 13: BLUEGARS START WITH A WIN MANITOBA BISONS 1 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 5 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UofM: MHKY: Cougars knock off Bisons 5-1 at home (with boxscore) ➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: January 13, 2023 (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMan: J. Hooker (10:27 2nd) MRU: K. Morrisseau (08:01 1st), R. Sawchuk (14:56 2nd), N. Yaremko (04:12 3rd), E. Regnier (07:38 3rd), J. Power (16:37 3rd) Goal: Man: Harkness (38 shots, 33 saves), MRU: (15 shots, 14 saves) The Bisons gave this one the proverbial college try. It was 2-1 for the Bluegars after two periods, but the 3rd was no contest. For MRU, Sawchuk notched his 15th and Yaremko his 13th. In a statistical twist, neither side had a PP goal in the game. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD MACEWAN GRIFFINS 2 REGINA COUGARS 3 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ MacU: Griffins' losing streak stretches to eight after two late goals against leads to 3-2 loss in Regina (with boxscore) ➤ UofR: Cougars score come-from-behind win over MacEwan (with boxscore) Quick SummaryMac: D. Pouteau (16:41 3rd) Goal: Mac: Abel (28 shots, 25 saves), Reg: Evanoff (28 shots, 26 saves) This was the 8th straight loss for the Family Guys. It was basically even throughout all the stats, which would give the Mutants hope in Saturday‛s rematch. This allows The Banjo-Cats to move within a point of the Bisons. U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 1 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 0 Links: ➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW ➤ UBC: Lane earns first shutout as ‘Birds open 2023 with win over Huskies (with boxscore) ➤ UofS: MHKY: Saskatchewan Falls 1-0 to UBC (with boxscore) Quick SummaryUBC: J. Sandhu (13:49 1st) Sask: none Goal: UBC: Lane (27 shots, 27 saves), Sask: Kooy (29 shots, 28 saves) This is about as close as a game can get. With Jets and Bisons games on Friday night, I never got to see any of this one. UBC got the goaltending they haven‛t always had this year. The Evil Monkeys still look to be in search of a #1 goaltender.
