2023-24 Manitoba Moose Season Preview:
As the Manitoba Moose are about to start the 2023-24 season tonight, I thought it would be a great time to take a quick look at the players who made the team this year. Management opted to keep 28 players at this point in time (no roster size limits in the AHL), but some of the extras may eventually find themselves heading to the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals. Currently, the Moose have 21 players on contracts with the Winnipeg Jets, 7 playing on AHL deals, and hockey players from 7 different countries. The team added two new rookies (Chibrikov & Zhilkin) to the forward group and also will see Lucius & Lambert getting in their first full seasons.
Here is the full Moose roster:
Forwards (17): Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Parker Ford, Henri Nikkanen, Jeffrey Viel, Jeff Malott, Kristian Reichel, Dominic Toninato, Wyatt Bongiovanni, Danny Zhilkin, Nicholas Jones*, Brad Lambert, Chaz Lucius, Nikita Chibrikov, C.J. Suess*, Daniel Torgersson, Carson Golder*, and Thomas Caron*.
Defence (9): Kyle Capobianco, Ashton Sautner, Tyrel Bauer, Dawson Barteaux*, Simon Lundmark, Artemi Knaizev, Jimmy Oligny*, Dean Stewart*, and Dmitry Kuzmin.
Goalies (2): Oskari Salminen and Collin Delia.
Yesterday's practice showed 6 players skating away from the main group and they won't be in play for tonight's opener: Nikkanen, Bongiovanni, Kuzmin, Golder*, Jones*, & Caron*. Not really sure why they were not with the main group, but Nikkanen has been banged up since Jets' training camp so they might all have some type of injury.
That leaves the following group to make up the lineup tonight against the Calgary Wranglers:
Forwards (12): Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Parker Ford, Jeffrey Viel, Jeff Malott, Kristian Reichel, Dominic Toninato, Danny Zhilkin, Brad Lambert, Chaz Lucius, Nikita Chibrikov, C.J. Suess*, and Daniel Torgersson.
Defence (8): Kyle Capobianco, Ashton Sautner, Tyrel Bauer, Dawson Barteaux*, Simon Lundmark, Artemi Knaizev, Jimmy Oligny*, and Dean Stewart*.
Goalies (2): Oskari Salminen and Collin Delia.
IllegalCurve had someone at today's Moose early day skate, but they weren't keeping a close eye on things as they only came away with the projected forward lines for tonight.
Malott / Lambert / AJF
Toninato / Lucius / Chibrikov
Torgersson / Zhilkin / Ford
Viel / Suess* / Reichel
But from the AHL's site, I can see that Capobianco, Lundmark, Sautner, Bauer, Stewart*, & Oligny* will be the six defenders dressed. It also appears that Salminen will getting the nod to start in goal.
Disappointed that defender Knaizev isn't in the lineup, as he was quite impressive at the Young Stars Classic this year. However, very excited that the Jets/Moose staffs have decided to try Lambert out at center this year. The speed on that top line should be something with him combining with Jonsson-Fjallby to hopefully set up goal scoring Malott. The 2nd line seems like it has a good mix of two talented prospects & a veteran. The 3rd line is filled with interesting Winnipeg prospects. The veteran 4th line very well could end up getting more ice-time than the youngsters on the 3rd, but should provide grit and a bit of scoring touch.
The Manitoba defense is definitely going through a re-haul this season, losing key players like Heinola, Chisholm, and Gawanke. Delia & Salminen both played well in their pre-season action with Winnipeg, so it appears that the team could get solid performances from their masked men.
Game time is 7 pm tonight in Winnipeg, MB. AHLTV is having a free weekend, so if you sign up you could watch the matchup tonight and the re-match vs Calgary on Sunday afternoon.
While the Manitoba Moose players might not be superstitious enough to be scared to play on Friday the 13th, they should probably be frightened to face one of best AHL (if not the best) goalies in the Wranglers' Dustin Wolf. Bet they were hoping some NHL team would trade for the Flames' Vladar by now.
I'm not sure how the season will play out for the Moose, but I am sure excited to watch some of the prospects on the squad. Word on the street is saying to expect Manitoba to be "young & fast" this season. Sounds good to me
