Dave Bolland calls Sedins “Sisters” again. Here is why you shouldn’t care.
If you went to bed early last night, you’re going to wake up to a lot of chatter about Dave Bolland doing an interview where he calls the Sedins “Sisters” again. Please read further to get caught up. But go ahead and have a coffee first. This post is a bit long. No no, go ahead. I’ll wait….You could have offered to make me a cup. Fine, whatever.
David Kaplan hosts a popular radio show in Chicago on WGN radio 720, and recently they had a show with guests of honor Dave Bolland and Corey Crawford. Andrea Darlas is also present for the interview, another WGN reporter. And what was one of the topics that came up? Why the Canucks of course, in particular, the Sedin Sisters.
Before I get into my thoughts on this, I will let you have an unbiased listen to the comments. Feel free to listen to all 30 minutes of it HERE
If you want the comments relating just to the Canucks, I have saved you the pain of having to a bunch of Hawks fans and a lady who sounds like she is selling Avon products in Wisconsin, and I have typed them out below. They might be missing a few small words (ie sometimes the player repeated himself ‘they er….they er play hard”.) but the transcript below is done to the best of my ability to keep it as close to the original comments as possible.
Dave Bolland on how to be an effective pest: “It’s fun just jabbing at them, you know they’re going to snap once in a while if you just keep yanking at them and doing little things to them, they’re going to snap and I think you seen what happened to the Sedin Sisters and Thornton there.”

Crawford on whether or not players try to get into his head, like how Byfuglien and Bolland got into Luongo’s head: “Not much you know I don’t know maybe I just don’t hear them or listen to them, but…maybe there was one guy, Lapierre, who was trying to get at me in the playoffs, but I don’t know guys don’t really pick on goalies that much, maybe just other teams…I know our guys do…”

Dave Kaplan on teams they look forward to playing: There are certain games where you go “I’m ready to go”. Is it Vancouver or is it the Dead Wings? Which team excites you more?
Bolland: “Er I think it’s both of them. For sure Vancouver, I think you guys know how much hatred…we hate those guys.”
Dave Kaplan: “And the green men.”
Bolland: “Yeah they’re ugly. And the sisters. But for sure I think Vancouver is one of those teams that when they come to town or we go there, guys are pretty jacked and they are ready to go.”

Bolland: “I hate all of them.”

On what Bolland does with his spare time on the road away from the rink: ”There’s a lot of weirdos [In Vancouver], you don’t want to be out there too long.”

Andrea Darlas: “If the Sedins [ever] become Hawks, will they still be sisters?”
Bolland: “They’ll never become Hawks. They’ll never. I don’t think we’d let them on our team. That’s probably one thing. We’d be sure to not let them on our team. And yeah they probably still would be sisters. I think they might sleep in bunk beds. The older one has the bottom one, the younger one has the top.”
Those were the main comments that Bolland made about the Canucks. Now I know this is sure to cause a lot of drama in the Canuck fan world because Bolland is once again talking crap about the Canucks, and Dave Bolland isn’t exactly a favorite of ours here in Vancouver. But before you knee jerk into a “drawing Bolland’s face with your feces on the wall and punching it repeatedly with your fist covered in barbed wire” rage, here are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t care what Dave Bolland says.
1) It is small petty immature humour
Look, if anyone knows about humour pissing people off, it would be me. I do jokes all the time on twitter, and cross lines all the time. Sometimes people find me hilarious, sometimes people think I’m an immature jerk. It comes with the territory of trying to be funny. One person accused me of not understanding how humour works because I once asked if I should call child protection services because a parent had their kid in a Bruins shirt. You never know what will offend people. And Dave Bolland? He was just trying to be funny here. He is in front of his home crowd, he had fans in the audience giggling like crazy over the mere mention of the “Sedin Sisters”. He was playing it up for them. Remember when Kesler told David Backes that Kelly was a great gal? Or to give his balls a tug? We all laughed and thought it was an amusing side bar. I know Dave Bolland has a shorter leash because his jokes always seem to be the same, but seriously, it is a stupid joke not worth getting upset over.
2) It wasn’t malicious
Listen to the interview. If anyone was setting the tone, it was Dave Kaplan. That is the guy who kept feeding Dave the lines. The first minute of the interview has Kaplan calling the Sedins the “Sisters” and the crowd laughing like crazy. Bolland heard this and later on just played it up to the crowd. That’s all Bolland was doing this entire interview. He honestly spoke for 75% of the interview, Crawford barely said anything. Bolland likes to hear his own voice and he obviously enjoys being “the funny guy” so he went with it. Look at the interview, a kid asks him if he hates some or all of the Canucks. What does Bolland say? He deadpans it and says “All of them.” He is just spicing up an interview segment a bit for the home crowd. I once went to a season ticket event and someone asked Kevin Bieksa (This was before the Chicago rivalry) “Which team do you hate the most?” and Kevin responded “We hate Toronto” and the crowd went nuts. Bieksa was just playing it up there. Bolland is playing it up here. If Bolland had gone out of his way to call the Sedins Sisters I might have had an issue with it. Like if he was doing a car commercial and all of a sudden he said “The Sedin Sisters LOVE this Volkswagon” that might have made me pause for a second. But he just responded to what he was given on this one.
You want real anger? Try reading about how Mike Keenan tore Linden apart when he was on the Canucks and asked him “What have you ever done for this franchise?” That, my friend, is something to get angry about. Not this.
3) Pumping tires
Remember when Roberto Luongo mentioned pumping his tires? And mentioned how he might have stopped the game 2 OT winner? Remember how Luongo’s actual quote was cut in half so it made it far worse than it appears? We heard nothing but Luongo crap the rest of the finals. People jumped all over him and screamed at him for being an arrogant prick who was being such a jerk for talking bad about Thomas, and someone who was insecure because he needed his tires pumped. The media and fans ran with that ALL SERIES LONG. That is what will happen here. People will hear a sound byte of “The Sedin Sisters sleep in a bunk bed” and that is just going to explode in Canuck Nation. Don’t let it. It’s not worth it. Listen to the entire interview if you think Bolland is a jerk, and if after listening to it, you still think he was being a dick, then sure, go ahead, take your war public. But don’t jump to conclusions based on someone trying to get hits for their article who uses only one quote from this interview to try and rile people up. If you hated any of that ‘pump my tires’ business that went on last year, then you owe it yourself to listen to the entire interview before you form your opinion.
4) It makes for a great rivalry
Honestly, I hate Dave Bolland. I think he is an arrogant little ****. I know he is a good player, but I also dislike his arrogance. But there are two people in the world. The Trevor Linden’s of the world who always say the right thing but make for a boring interview, and then there are the Dave Bolland’s of the world who will speak their mind a bit more and go off track a bit. The Dave Bolland’s of the world help generate hate between the two teams. It makes us not like them. It makes them bond together over their hatred of us. This is exactly what keeps this rivalry going. We don’t need a Claude Lemieux cheap shot to spark this rivalry. We have players chirping off in the press to do it without anybody getting hurt. That’s awesome. Bring it on. You don’t think the Canucks will hear this and add it to the fire of hatred they have Chicago? Of course they will. That’s perfect. This kind of stuff is why when Todd Bertuzzi ran Chris Chelios almost through the boards in 2002 it was one of the loudest cheers I have ever heard. It’s simple wrestling logic. Make your bad guys bad, and your good guys good, and watch as the fans get emotionally swept away in all of it.
5) It’s Dave Bolland. Who cares what he says.
Even if you ignore my first four points, remember this. Dave Bolland calls himself a rat. He claims to love it. His job is to piss people off. Getting angry and annoyed is just feeding his ego and giving him what he wants. This isn’t the Simpsons. He won’t be crying on the ice like Daryl Strawberry did on the field in that Simpsons episode. He doesn’t care. So why should we? Don’t waste your time and energy on Dave Bolland. Simply make fun of him on twitter, and have fun with it. Don’t get angry about it. It’s not worth your time. Bolland is a troll and he does it well. Just package any resentment you have for him and put it into a tiny little rage ball that will explode into happiness the next time Hamhuis tries to ram his face into the ice.
That is my take on the Bolland interview. I am sorry for the long article, I expect many a “too long, didn’t read” responses, but for those that read through this, I hope Bolland doesn’t ruin your day or get you angry. I hope you just take in stride and use it to hate the Hawks just a tiny bit more than you did yesterday. Use it for the rivalry. Don’t focus on Bolland.
