Ex- Jet Randy Cunneyworth is the new interim head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. The Montreal people are killing him because he cant speak french and have gone so far as to call it an INSULT to have hired him. The Habs are my second fav team. have been for years, many many years. but this is just ridiculous. the French need to remeber that they still live in CANADA and freedom of SPEECH is in our consitution, regardless if its in Quebec or B.C. weak sauce montreal. its Crap like this that makes us hate you guys. grow up!

1) This has been the case in Montreal for the longest time. 2) While it USED to be the fans, now it's mainly the media in Montreal that does the complaining (or that creates the propaganda where the coach&captain need to speak French). The reasons behind the media's actions are quite simple: many reporters over there cannot speak English, and even if they did, they would have to translate a lot of the material.
I certainly do NOT agree with what they are doing, but simply pointing out their "logic". It's too bad for them, because they eliminate a large pool of great candidates who could be a great hockey coach. It's ridiculous, and unfortunate for Habs fans. But hey, it's always been that way, and will remain that way (at least in the near future).

I think the issue is that at the NHL level a HUGE part of the coaches job does not involve COACHING at all, but rather speaking to the MEDIA and through them to the FANS...since MANY if not MOST of the HABS fans are french speakers, it certainly makes sense that the HABS would normally hire a FRENCH speaking coach who could answer questions in French for the fans to hear via the media in their NATIVE language...
put yourself in their shoes...would you like a Jets coach that could not communicate in English at all...say a Russian speaking coach that would only speak to the media (and thus fans) via a translator??
Because there are plenty of good coaches that are bilingual, I think it makes sense for the Habs to have a bilingual coach...just my opinion...

while I agree to you to some degree.. the Canadian language is English. And besides, if a guy's there to coach, and he coaches well and gets his players to do what he wants, what's the problem? Habs fans/media throwing wobblys, it's getting old now

Well in my opinion if the Montreal media that lives in Canada can't speak English, and they don't understand Randy, then they should higher a interpreter or simply go out and take English lessons! Come on this is BullCrap, you can go anywhere in North America and easily get by speaking English, French not so much, and before you comment I'm French! One more thing how many players on the Habs can't speak French, and if they can't and choose not to learn French do you trade them? When will that province ever wake up and remember what country they live in!

Let's not lose sight of the real issue, here, though. While the Habs organization is notorious for hating on non-French-speaking coaches, they've ACTUALLY HIRED one in this case! Sure it's an interim coaching position, but it's a foot in the door nonetheless. Personally I think this gig is Cunneyworth's to lose. If he can rise above all the negative BS that's coming his way right now he just might find himself a permanent fixture in the Habs organization.
Also guys...French is one of Canada's national languages, whether the vast majority of Canadians speak it or not. Montreal fans' obsessing over their French Canadian-ness is nothing new. And as a non-Habs fan, I have no problem with the team putting self-limitations on their own talent pool. Have at it, Habs!

Wow the only reason French was recognized as one of Canada's national languages is because of the Squeaky Wheel Rule, and as long as some people " have no problem with it" the Squeaky Wheel Rule will always RULE. That's why the one thing I truly love about our US neighbors is there motto "AMERICA, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT" Canadians needs to take on that attitude.

oh God Tim! i hope Canada never takes on that "Love it or Leave It" attitude. but at the same time, sometimes we as a nation are a little too tolerant. Is Quebec a distinct society?.....yes they are. BUT....in my eyes anyway, their language laws is in direct violation of our constitution. this thread is gonna go off the tracks now!...lol c'mon Selanne....let me have it!
