I'd love to see the Habs sign someone like Scotty Bowman.
I'm assuming he doesn't speak french... I would just love to see the reaction where you have a proven NHL coach that has loads of records come coach your team and see whether french is still a big deal.

Bowman was born in Montreal and could speak so-so French, although English was his first language. Bowman was the Habs' coach from 1972 to 1979. They won the Cup with him in 1973, then another 4 in a row from 1976 to 1979. Interestingly enough, though, Bowman replaced Al MacNeil as head coach. MacNeil, an anglophone, was fired because they thought he was favouring the English players on team too much. History repeating, eh? ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

I find it quite ironic that when Nordiques had Dave Chambers (who didn't speak a single word of French) and Marc Crawford (who barely could speak any at first) as head coaches, people didn't make as much of a huge thing about the matter as the Habs right now. And that's despite the fact Quebec City is much more French than Montreal and that back in the '90s, the separatist movement was still popular.
So why isn't it OK for the Habs? That said, today medias tend to play a big role in making things look bigger than they actually are, so that gotta have a large impact. I doubt that many French people care at all if their coach know their language or not, just as long as he manages to get their hockey team to win games.

Clearly the Habs' troubles are because of money and the ethnic coach.

Actually plenty of people don't care, as long as their team win, but in sports, it's always great that your favorite team has players from your region or state, so it's easier to identify yourself to your team.

No matter how many times the "nationalism" debate flares up, English Canada seemingly will never quite understand how the Quebec psyche operates. The seemingly self-evident reasons for the flare up in regards to whether the head coach of the Canadiens should speak French will never cease to fail to reach English Canadians. Wow the only reason French was recognized as one of Canada's national languages is because of the Squeaky Wheel Rule, and as long as some people " have no problem with it" the Squeaky Wheel Rule will always RULE. That's why the one thing I truly love about our US neighbors is there motto "AMERICA, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT" Canadians needs to take on that attitude. Quite frankly with this attitude Quebec would have never been a member of Canadian confederation, and thus Canada would have existed as a fragmented and weak series of minor provinces dominated by the core region, Ontario. If you thought Toronto-centric media bias was obnoxious, try not having Quebec in the mix. On point though, I have no issues with Habs fans taking issue with their head coach's inability to speak French. It's their choice to pressure the Canadiens organization.
