Jets season ticket holders able to sell ducats they can't use on secure website

WINNIPEG - For those NHL Winnipeg Jets fans who didn't get season tickets, there's still a chance to get to see a game or two.

The team is putting the finishing touches on an Internet portal for its winnipegjets.com website that will enable season ticket holders to sell ducats that they can’t use in a safe and secure manner.

Here’s how it works: the 13,000 season ticket holders can post tickets that they want to sell on the website, members of the public can peruse what’s up for grabs and then buy them online just like they would any concert or sporting event ticket.

The team will then reimburse the season ticket holder. A still-to-be determined processing fee will be charged, too.

Mitch Brennan, the newly hired director of ticket administration with True North Sports & Entertainment, said the service is offered league-wide and has proven very popular in hockey hotbeds such as Vancouver and Montreal.

The plan is to launch the website next month, around the same time as a limited number of game day tickets are put on sale.

The Jets’ first exhibition game is scheduled for Sept. 20, three days after training camp opens.

“The main goal is to provide a safe and authorized venue for people to resell their tickets on the secondary market. We know it’s happening, everybody knows it’s happening. We want to provide an avenue where they know the tickets are authentic, there’s no possibility of fraud and they’re adhering to the laws of the province,” Brennan said.

Those laws stipulate that event tickets can only be resold at face value. Scalpers who resell tickets for a markup are breaking the law.

That’s not to say scalping doesn’t or won’t happen. There are currently several dozen tickets for sale at www.stubhub.com for the team’s home opener on Oct. 9 against the Montreal Canadiens, ranging in price from $500 to $3,750 each.

Season tickets at the MTS Centre cost anywhere from $39 to $129 per seat per game.

Brennan said unregulated ticket sales on such sites lend themselves to fraudulent activity because there’s such a quick turnaround and no physical goods change hands. An invalid ticket can be sold the day before a game and when the buyer is refused entry at the arena with a fake, there’s no recourse.

According to the Jets, a number of would-be ticket buyers have been duped by fraudsters since the drive to 13,000 wrapped up in June.

To be honest, beyond my personal friends my first unused, unsold tickets will be offered here, especially to the ROTJ old school members. I plan to create a list of non-season ticket holders and contact them one at a time to see if they want them. Honestly I have no idea if there will be any for sale this year, but I will sell here as plan C...

Plan A being going to the game myself
Plan B my personal friends

If and when I cant sell here, then Ill maybe check out this option.

I don't see the TNSE plan working - where is the incentive? There are too many friends of STH wanting tickets.

Why would someone post their ST on the TNSE site, sell at face value and pay a fee to TNSE for a net LOSS?

Although this might be a popular choice in franchise years 4, 5, 6 etc etc (especially if the anti-ticket re-selling law is repealed)...but not this year.

Although the usage may or may not be high it pays to have the system in place. I think its a good idea.

in other cities like Vancouver and Montreal they're allowed to sell over face value. It cost me about $275 a seat, plus a $50 club fee for front row seats. Of course I would rather pay less, but if this service didn't exist, or if these markets had to sell at face value, I wouldn't get to see any games while traveling... I do realize that it means 1 less local guy will see the game, but that's just how things have developed in sports and entertainment. If I have to sell seats to someone I don't know next year I would like to say that I would sell them for what I paid, but that would probably be a lie. I wouldn't rape anyone, but I'm sure they would be somewhere in the neighborhood of walk up prices. ( My Karma value will probably drop to -16 for that I'm sure)

I think it's a great idea.

It may not be used very much in the first season, but after a while people will get tired of trying to track people down to sell their tickets, and will just post them online.

Yeah...I think it's a tough sell at this point for me to put my tickets on there. I have literally dozens of family and friends begging me for a ticket. Who knows what will happen to demand 3 or 5 years from now.

Are you talking about here, in Winnipeg?

NVM, I misread the post, you were taliking about getting tickets for $275 plus club fee in Mtl and Van, right?

It depends who pays the fee. If the buyer is paying the fee, I would
put my tickets on sale on the site. A buyer should not be upset
to pay a slight fee to get tickets.

Maybe not this year, but within 1-2 years I plan to fly to Winnipeg and experience a Jets home game one day. That site might be a great place to find tickets.

For this season I might just fly down to Florida and catch an away game. Tickets are practically given away down there, and the flight is dirt cheap.

But I am glad to hear of that site Might come in handy if I ever finally go to Wpg!

1. TN says there will be a fee for the service. Will this be added to the ticket price so the buyer absorbs it or will it be deducted from the amount paid to the STH, making him bear it.

2. What price will TN resell the ticket for? STH prices or walk-up prices, which are said to be 40% higher than STH prices. If it's the latter, it would be painfully inequitable. I, the purchaser of the ticket, cannot sell it for walk-up value, but TN can buy it off me and then do that which I'm not legally allowed to do? I'm virtually certain TN wouldn't go that route but I'd like someone in the media to ask the question.

I'd like some clarification on this also. My $80.00 ticket (season ticket price) gets sold to TN for $80.00 minus "fees" and they resell to someone at the walk up price for $100 +

This service is great for someone like me who has to fly in to see a game in Winnipeg.

However, this season will make it to get tickets so I may have to use StubHub.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that the ticket buyer would be covering the fee. Considering there will be a handful of walk up tickets available to every game at a premium over the season ticket price, selling on here would probably yield the season ticket holder the price they paid and TNSE the difference between that price and the walk up price.
