Looks like the Islanders may be leaving Long Island.
58% voting No on arena referendum. Just over half of the polls are reporting.
I guess you never know - it's theoretically possible for someone to step in to build the arena and save the team. But you have to wonder if the writing is now on the wall for this franchise with the early 80's dynasty.
Like everywhere in the NHL these days, I guess it's really up to the fans. If they were coming out to see the games, there would probably be more of a push to build the new arena. Still, it's sad to see a franchise with some significant hockey history moving.
I am sure there are lots of twists and turns to come. Sometime in the last few days I read on the net somewhere that the NHL is looking at a number of different options for this franchise location, including possibly other areas of New York.
The question is, if you build it, will they come?

Apparently only 5% of eligible voters turned out. Goes to show you how far they have fallen since their mighty days of long ago. Sad actually.

I can't see this team relocating anywhere. I believe that they have a big tv contract with msg network. They may be leaving nasaua county but will end up somewhere in the ny area. Nice to see some taxpayers stand up to millionaire owners. The fine folks of Glendale could take a lesson from these voters.

I could definitely see Brooklyn or Queens embracing the Islanders as their own. There is so much history to those NYC boroughs. Right now, they play in Uniondale, which is in the middle of suburbia.

Wang could always leverage his tv money to pay for an arena himself.

Looks like the Islanders may move even further away from NYC to Suffolk County: "The New York Islanders may still get a new arena on Long Island, but in a different county.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says he welcomes the idea of the hockey team moving to the eastern end of the island that he represents, as long as it's good for the team and for the community. He said on Saturday he called team owner Charles Wang last week to talk about the idea. Messages to an Islanders spokesman were not immediately returned.
Voters in neighbouring Nassau County rejected a plan Monday to borrow US$400 million for a new hockey arena. The Islanders' lease at Nassau Coliseum ends in 2015. Wong has said his goals for the team are to win the Stanley Cup and to stay on Long Island."Map of Suffolk County: www.co.suffolk.ny.us/upload/planning/pdfs2/maps/2010_pdf/general.pdfsource: www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/127075178.html?viewAllComments=y

I am really curious if a new arena will actually make a difference. Hockey has been struggling for a while in Long Island and its hard know for sure what it will take to get it going again.

Isles aren't gonne leave the NY area, it won't happen nor should it. I would be shocked if the Islanders left the New York area, but, with the US economy being what it is, I can not say they would never leave.

How much would you like to bet Bettman said the same thing 15+ years ago about the Nordiques and Jets? With all due respect to you, sir, that attitude HAS to change if the NHL is to make the transformation we'd all like to see, and adopt a policy that's the opposite of the Bettman Doctrine: "If they're old, let 'em move or fold, If they're new, they stay or I'll sue!" We have to fight for those golden oldies instead--no matter which side of the Border they're on--and hope for the relocation of the "never should've beens."
