I'm not too sure. I am not around any 9 year olds, ever. My Daughter is turning 3, so not sure how the world works now for 9 year olds. Been 27 years since I was 9. Do you even let children that young surf the net on their own these days? I prob would not like it. This is a tough question, being a parent, I'd prob say no. But when is the right time? 13? 18?

If they don't lie about how old they are, fb security settings are pretty high. As long as they don't accept friend requests from strangers (it was candy back in my day) they'll be fine.

I voted 'not ok'. That said, I'd also vote it's not ok for my teenage kids to be fooling around with sex but I'm not so naive to think I can stop it.
The flip side is the social damage that my kid might suffer if he's the only one at school to not be on FB. I haven't really seen what kind of security FB has for kids but at the very least I'd review it. Plus I'd make sure that I can fully check out my kid's FB page whenever I wanted.

thats a tough one to answer Biff. i have two boys, 12 and 10 and both of them have facebook accounts. have had them for about two years making my youngest 8 when he got his account. but as parents, we teach them about the dangers of online and who you allow as friends. we have complete access to their accounts ( for now) and we monitor them daily. so far so good. the one neat thing that has come from this is that it has actually made it a little easier when screening their real life friends. you can tell which kids are good or bad just by how they post and what they say. so, if i could vote both ways i would. but i cant so i must abstain.

The reason i ask is my friends ex wife set up an account for their 9 year old daughter. She also has links on her page for kids modelling, Jon Benet Ramsay style. Am i the only one who thinks this is somewhat creepy?

I voted fine, personally I think its definitely something to consider because there is some stuff on facebook you might not want a 9 year old being exposed to.
BUT
Chances are your kids is going to go on facebook anyway, he can access it at a friends or school. Facebook was blocked in my high school but preety much everyone knew about this site that allowed you to get by whatever filter the system used.
Simply put I reccomend allowing them to use but talk to them about online safety. If you flat out say no your just gonna create tension and odds are the kid is gonna use it anyway without any advice on safety

I don't think kids should use the Internet, Facebook or otherwise, supervised. We keep our family computer where at least one of us can watch what they are doing. Not really a problem when they are really young and are just on pbskids.org but it's not hard to even inadvertently end up where you don't want to be.

I have an 8 year old girl. No FB for her. It's always a touchy subject to give parenting advice to other parents, but here i go. Kids that age shouldn't grow up in front of a tv, computer, or video games. My kids are limited to how much time they can spend with electronics.
They play outside with their friends every chance they get. They have more fun playing outside and face to face with their friends, then they do watching some mind numbing tv.

I've had facebook for 3 years....I've seen bad stuff, so I say no.
Kids these days are kinda spoiled - iPods, HDTVs, XBOX, etc. (I have all three, but not until recently)
When I was 9 I had Pokemon cards. :3
