Loved watching him with the Moose. Was excited when he signed with the Jets-you knew he was going to play his heart out every night.
Very, very sad-I hope they honour him some way this year. Unfortunate way to begin the franchise, but hopefully the players will try to rally around this (I know a lot of the guys didn't play directly with him, but some did).
RIP Rick

I watched Rypien play every single game he played as a Moose, even a few Canucks games (tried to stay away from those...) -- was really looking forward to watching him play as a Jet. He will be missed. Tragic, very tragic... My heart goes out to his friends and family.

Rest in peace Ripper. You will always fly with the Winnipeg Jets.

R.I.P So sad my thoughts are with his family. Hopefully this tragedy can further educate people on the dangers of mental health, it can affect anyone, I mean who would have thought a rich pro hockey player would be suffering. Sad day for the jets I hope they design a patch or decal for players to wear.

I'm very proud of this forum in the reaction to this. Sometimes you hear a lot of this macho talk about "manning up" when someone takes his life, but deep depression is often something that needs curing like any other disease. It's always a good time to remind yourself to listen to your friends if they have depression signs, and don't be afraid to step in and get help for them if they're on the brink. Depression strikes the young, the old, the poor, the rich, women, and men.
My condolences to his family and his fans.

Depression is a real illness that can claim lives -- either through overuse of prescription drugs to help contain it or one's mental state being severely damaged by the effects of depression. Its really sad Rip fell into an abyss when it seemed like he was pulling things together and excited to play for the Jets. Something happened in a short time span that he just could not recover from and it was too late.

So, what is the word on the cause of death?
Most points are leading towards suicide or even some kind of overdose.
Horrible.

So, what is the word on the cause of death? Most points are leading towards suicide or even some kind of overdose. Horrible. One of the first news sources in Vancouver to report it on Monday cited suicide as cause of death. It was changed to the "sudden, non-suspicious" version most other news outlets have been reporting later on. I assume they want to wait until the coroner confirms it and if the family wants the cause of death made known to the public. No matter what the cause of death, it just horribly tragic.
