Is he worth a low paying 1 year deal? Hear a rumor Jets are interested in his services. Coming off a Torn MCL. Has been on the shelf since Nov. 24th. Should be fully healed and rehabbed by now. Could possibly contribute 15 goals for a cheap price?

i know the Jets want some depth, but they have plenty of cap space right now. we need a proven scorer, not Hunter.

I can't believe Lou and the Devils traded for him, then turned right around the next week and waived him.

I agree. Jets need scoring and Hunter hardly fits the bill. Would much rather see Dumont or Samsonov here.

I agree about getting an elite scorer. I've been saying to trade Bogo for that all summer. I have to disagree with our depth though. If you try putting together 4 lines, you'll see our 3rd line is weak compared to NHL standards and our 4th line is pretty much an AHL line. I'm just thinking for a low price we could bolster that 3rd line a bit.

True but if you bumped say Antropov, Kane, Wheeler, or someone like that down to the 3rd line (due to adding an elite scorer) then our 3rd is improved. 4th lines are always hit and miss in my opinion. Not saying they aren't important, but I think you look for guys to step up from the AHL into that role, and we have certainly signed a lot of players who are either bound for the 4th line or St. Johns.

www.winnipegjets.com has the following for their depth chart: Ladd / Little / Wheeler Kane / Burmistrov / Antropov Glass / Stapleton / Fehr Cormier / Slater / Thorburn I think Stapleton ain't worth a lick and I think we might see Maxwell, McArdle or Jaffray crack the lineup. I've heard Fehr is out till November and bringing down somebody from the 1st or 2nd line is too much of a loss up front. To me, Hunter would slide nicely into that 3rd line and give us a little boost in depth there with the idea of still going and getting a 20+ scorer.

^ That's right, Hunter is an excellent third-line guy. Right now they have Fehr and Glass in that role. I'm not so certain Glass belongs there, and Fehr is injured, so Hunter would probably fill a glaring gap in the line-up.
The other thing this team needs is a second-line centre. I think its a little early to put Burmistrov there this season.

I have a feeling this will be the year Jaffray becomes a full-time NHLer. He's got so much working for him in this situation. It's yet to be seen if he can handle the task, but I think he could de pretty well for himself. 10 goals if he plays enough games with the right linemates.

He has scored 15-20 goals on a chitty Islanders team, so I say give him a shot! 6ft, 210 lbs, shoots right.Couldn't hurt. Quite Moneyball if you ask me...

Given his injury history I think the Jets would be better served giving a young player the ice time to develope.

Isles (as well as Jets) fan here. I don't think Winnipeg wants any part of Trent Hunter at this stage of things. He just can't stay healthy enough to be relevant. Trust me, following the Islanders as a die-hard, I know. He had a wicked rookie season, but that's all he's had. He's too slow, and I'd rather see the Jets take a shot on a guy like JP Dumont instead. Maybe with Rypien's departure, Grier might be a nice gritty add?

I don't want to see Mike Grier anywhere near the Jets. He's older than a dinosaur. I have no problem with Dumont. He's 33 though but could be a good veteran presence who with a little luck could score 15. As for starting young guys to develop, that's what the end of the year is for if you're out of the race. You want to make a name for yourself to attract FA's? Make the playoffs!
