Players come and go... Bobby Hull played a handful of NHL games for the Jets. You're clinging to a defunct league and Phoenix Coyotes history... Actually, technically speaking the WHA and NHL 'merged'...hence, the WHA is not defunct but rather was absorbed into the NHL...

But when the 4 WHA teams joined the NHL it was characterized as a merger of the two leagues -- obviously not an equal merger and in name only. To me, none of this stuff matters. The professional hockey history of WPG belongs to WPG. No one owns 'history' strictly speaking. The Coyotes naturally held on the Jets records. All of this is really not much more than semantics.

Jets' Kane gets Hull’s blessing on No. 9 WINNIPEG — The blessing has come from one of the Winnipeg Jets’ original saints, an icon in Winnipeg and in hockey to this very day. Hockey Hall of Famer and Winnipeg Jets legend Bobby Hull has given his OK for forward Evander Kane will wear No. 9 for the reborn Jets this NHL season. The subject became a hot-button issue earlier this summer, when Kane suggested to a Vancouver reporter he would like to keep the number he wore as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers and in the junior ranks with the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants — with Hull’s blessing, of course. Immediately, fans began debating whether the Jets’ franchise could reclaim its previous history from the Phoenix Coyotes and if Hull’s No. 9 should be considered untouchable along with Dale Hawerchuk’s No. 10 and the No. 25 worn by Thomas Steen. When Kane originally inquired about the availability of Hull’s old number, he also offered to switch to No. 91. Jets director of corporate communications Scott Brown said the team strongly encouraged Kane to keep wearing No. 9. “It’s very cool to be able to wear No. 9,” Kane said Wednesday night. “Bobby was an outstanding player who represented the city and it’s definitely a real honour to be able to wear that number. You know, I was just checking about what the organization’s plans were for No. 9 and then this story seemed to become a lot bigger than I thought it would.” After Hull’s departure from the Jets, forward Doug Smail wore No. 9 for eight seasons. In 1989, the Jets retired the No. 9 and Smail switched to No. 12. Read more: www.globalwinnipeg.com/Jets+Kane+gets+Hull+blessing/5275212/story.html#ixzz1VRfJk3ug

Wonder what the outrage would be if Kane skated out onto the ice wearing Hull's creepy golden toupee...

I totally agree. At the end of the day, all Phoenix has are records anyway. They don't own the name, old logos and so on. Glad we have that much back. Because when the new Jets unveil a third jersey that features a vintage logo, are we now the Phoenix Coyotes?? Of course not. We are the Winnipeg Jets.
