How often do teams send offers to other teams' RFAs? I thought it was generally frowned upon around the league. I can't think of any, actually. The Shanahan one noted is the first example I've heard of. m.

I still remember the infamous Brendan Shannahan RFA signing by the Blues. The Devils got Scott Stevens in compensation, and he led them to three Stanley Cups, while the Blues were definitely a weaker franchise afterwards. Don't forget the Burke-Lowe feud of 2007-2008 with the war of words and the fist fight challenge. It was only when Burke's son died in 2010 that they patched things up. That is exactly why most GMs dont do offer sheets, as long as burke isnt involved it wouldnt normally go to that extreme, but the 2 GMs involved wont be doing any trades anytime soon, and a GM risks losing favour with the other GMs as well.

Reading between the lines, things look promising. Here's a quote from Chevy last night about signing Olli;
Cheveldayoff will not only look to Jokinen for leadership among the Jets' young roster, but to help increase production among the teams' established forwards like 30-goal scorer Evander Kane.
"Any time you can add a player of this stature, a player that has abilities to make plays and to score, it creates other opportunities for players like Evander," said Cheveldayoff.

Burke wanted to rent a barn to fight Lowe over this signing. Yep, how could I have forgotten that one? I remember the throwdown more than the signing, though. For everyone's information, here's what I found when I looked for the compensation the Jets would get if one of their RFA's was signed by another team: $1,110,249 or below - No Compensation
Over $1,110,249 to $1,682,194 - 3rd round pick
Over $1,682,194 to $3,364,391 - 2nd round pick
Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 - 1st round pick, 3rd
Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781 - 1st round pick, 2nd, 3rd
Over $6,728,781 To $8,410,976 - Two 1st Round Picks, 2nd, 3rd
Over $8,410,976 - Four 1st Round PicksAnd the maximum contract length considered is five years so here's hoping that Columbus offers Evander a ten year contract at $4.5 million a year. I'd be pleased if we received Columbus's next four first round draft picks in exchange for Evander Kane. ;D m.

Are you saying you get the corresponding pick for each yr of the contract? A 4 yr deal, gets you there 1st round pick, for the next 4 yrs?

Even if kane does sign an offer sheet, chevy will match it. we have a ton of cap space and I dont see him letting go of kane. 4 1st rounders would be nice... but depends on what team makes the offer

Are you saying you get the corresponding pick for each yr of the contract? A 4 yr deal, gets you there 1st round pick, for the next 4 yrs? As I understand it (CBA gurus please correct me if I'm wrong) but the compensation is based solely on the total dollar value of the contract divided by either the contract length or five years, whichever is shorter. So if Columbus signed Kane to a one year, $9 million dollar deal the Jets would get Columbus's next four first round draft picks. There's a caveat in all this - Columbus would have to have the picks available on their own. This means that they cannot offer to the Jets a first round pick that they received by way of a trade. If they've traded away any of their next four first round draft picks then they cannot fire off an offer sheet to begin with. And, for those pedantic ones out there who know how ridiculous my examples are (offering Kane a one year $9 million contract and such) I'll point out now, thereby saving time later, that I used those examples for illustrative purposes only. m.

Didnt Chicago do just that when Tkachuk was a RFA years ago? Front loaded a contract thinking the Jets didnt have the money to match. We did.

I don't think the rules were the same but yes, the 'Hawks did do just that, preying on the Jets' poverty at the time. Somehow, I can't see that same smoky backroom meeting happening today. "Hey, let's get Kane out of Winnipeg by getting into a money war with 'em. No way the Jets with that Thomson guy will be able to afford to match...". m.

I'm not the MOST patient person, so Kane not being signed is driving me wacky. I'd like to get him signed now and then fill in the pieces. Time to get this done Chevy!
