Only in the NHL can you be 4 points away from 8th place, yet 3 points away from 3rd place.
NOTE: This is a timely post...as of Feb 8, 2012 @ 5pm CST.
I think its time we end the madness and scrap the conference standings seeding. Even though I'm a proud Jet STH, it's friggin' ridiculous to try and comprehend that "maritime math".
EDITED: I.E. Keep the divisions but first in the division doesn't get playoff seed automatically (thx to roo604).
ps. side note: Hey guys -- if you forget to send your sweetie a Valentine's Gift this year, NO WORRIES. Tell her you thought it was cancelled this year --- blame it on "maritime math".
14 - 02 - 12 = 0 !!
(for those that don't get it, that's the date!).

You mean scrap the divisions in favor of one big conference?
Or
Do you mean keep the divisions but first in the division doesn't get playoff seed automatically?

Not unless you scrap the divisions altogether.

the issue will be travel and who you play. no point in playing 4 other teams 6 times unless there is incentive. without the divisions, teams would have to play each team in their conference equally, but we all know travel will then be the complaint...

This is tough for me. I agree that its weird that 3rd gets awarded to the worst of the division leaders. However, you can;t eliminate the top team getting an automatic spot in the playoffs either because each division plays their division rivals more then the other teams in the conference. This could be an unfair advantage. For the same reason its tough to just put them in 8th even if they are the 9th ranked team. Toronto might be ahead of them only because they got to play Ottawa 6 times instead of 4 for example.
Winning the Division should give you something though, some kind of advantage. I suppose if you lose the divisions it would work. Just not sure how you can get a somewhat balanced schedule that way though. You would need to play the same teams both home and away an equal amount of times in the conference and play all the other teams in the league in a way that makes it fair for all those in the conference.

Well if I'm a 9th place team that misses out because a team with less points gets in as first in its division, I can understand being hot about it. But I like it. It creates drama.
And has there ever been a time when that 3rd seed had less points than the 9th place team? You're being rewarded for winning your division by getting home ice advantage. I like it.
if the Jets finish 1st, I like it even more.

Ive seen this problem with baseball I cant remember what year it was but the division winner was just over .500 and there were like 4 wild card teams with way better records miss the playoffs, oh and the last season in the NFL New Orleans has a better record than Seattle but Seattle won the division and they get the home field and shock the Saints so it happens in other sports

I like things they way they are. I like the battle for the division and then having eight seeds in each conference.

I say back to Campbell and Wales conferences. Along with the Smythe, Patrick and other divisions that I can't remember.

In a perfect world I would like to see all teams play each other the same amount of games with the top 16 making the playoffs.
The reality is travel and fan interest in certain teams make this unlikely to happen.

When the CAPS beat the Panthers they jumped from 9th to 3rd while the Panthers fell from the 3rd to 9th.
If we start beating the CAPS and Panthers I think we've got a real shot.
