I'm not a golfer by any stretch of the imagination, but you certainly don't have to be a golfer to have an opinion on this. www.sportsnet.ca/golf/2012/08/20/females_augusta_british_open/What are your thoughts? I know that this is a male dominated forum, so the responses will be interesting. To me, it seems that the men should be allowed to have their club and the female golfers are free to create their own. There is, after all, the PGA and LPGA. I would not be offended if women started their own exclusive golf club. Your thoughts?

What is the world turning into! Girls in the Boys scout, but no boys in girl scouts. Girls have womens hockey, but girls get to play hockey with boys. "Shapes", Women only, guys just get to peak threw the windows.
My god next they will want to VOTE!

What part of Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden could those guys not understand lol. Couldn't help but notice they are both well known and politically powerful women in the US. Seems to me like a publicity stunt and not the Women's Rights initative the club wants it to look like.

Two thoughts:
- No problem with this (its not like the men are being forced to play golf with women) - Its perfectly okay for there to be all men and all women sports/clubs.
That ludicrous law suit a few years ago about those twin girls who sued to be allowed to play on the mens hockey team when they werent even good enough is a perfect example. Ofcourse, it was the coach that screwed up. He should have given them a try out and cut them rather then deny them a try out simply because they are girls.
Im generally of the believe that if a girl wants to try out for a boys team, let her. In the incredibly rare case that she is good enough to make the team, so be it. The problem becomes one of equality. Women who fight for girls' right to play on boys' teams scoff at the notion of boys playing on the girls' team. The reality is, its not about equality, it's about insecure women wanting to prove they're better than men and bringing that fight to youth sports. Silly.
In this case, its a golf club. I guess I dont really see the big deal. If I didnt want to play with women, I just wouldnt. Who cares if there are women in the bar or on the green?

Why is it so wrong to have things strictly for men, and when women have a women's only facility it is OK, and never challenged.
In my eyes all these people who fight these things are not doing society any favors. Boys belong in boy scouts Girls belong in girl scout, what in the hell is wrong with that. Why do people feel they need to challenge these things.

I agree with you Tim.
In this case though, I dont really see the big deal. I'm not a golfer so maybe thats why. But certainly if a man entered Shapes for Women and just started working out, what would happen?
Its perfectly okay to have boys and girls clubs but only if the intention is good. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have good intentions. A golf club is likely a hold over from when women were expected to shut up and clean the house while the men folk went out and had fun.

If we have women at golf courses it will change everything! I mean come on, Dad, we're men. That means a few things - we like to crap with the door open, we talk about pussy, we go on riverboat gambling trips, and we make our own beef jerky. That's what we do, and now that is all wrecked!

I am irritated at the idea that somehow everything "Gentlemen Only" is wrong, backwards and offensive... yet everything "Ladies Only" is cute, welcomed and seen as progressive.
There are "Ladies Only" sports establishments all over the place. You don't see men make a big stink about that because it's ladies' territory. Let them have it.
Men also want their territory. Augusta was one of them, and I don't see why people should see that as a problem.
Everything pro-male is not by definition anti-female, like a lot of women seem to think. It's just a place where guys can be guys.

That twin girls lawsuit was even more egregious than you're making it out to be. The two girls in question attended a high school that had both boys AND girls teams but they felt they were too good for the girls team and thus should be given the right to try out for the boys team. "The girls team is a joke" was the quote that got the most mileage. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2006/09/22/hockey-decision.htmlNauseating. But ladies at Augusta? I didn't even know they were barred in the first place. But then I didn't know August didn't allow non-whites until the 1990's or so I read. Meh. m.

Yes I remember that now. If only the coach had allowed them to try out. He would have cut them and that would have been it. In the end, thats what happened.
Those girls thought they were standing up for other girls but in reality, ther were hurting the girls program. Shameful.

Augusta is almost like a secret society. You don't apply to be a member, they ask you. So it may be years before there are a lot of women members. It doesn't really bother me but I agree with others that why can women have their exclusive groups and when men do women want to crash the party.

How I see this is one of the most famous "man caves" being turned into a co-ed cave. The fact that man caves exist tells us that women now rule the household and that men now have to have that "one room" where they can unwind. Why can't the Augusta chaps keep their man cave?
As I mentioned above, I would have absolutely no problems if top-notch female golfers started their own exclusive club. Heck, I would even support their "no men allowed" policy.
I disagree with women entering Augusta just like I disagree with men trying to enter Curves or Shapes, or whatever establishments are "women only".

I would not be offended if women started their own exclusive golf club. Would your opinion be the same if the issue was race or religion and not gender? After all, Augusta didn't allow memberships to African-Americans until 1990 and then it took another 22 years before a woman was allowed membership. As far as I'm concerned, discrimination is discrimination and it's wrong. If a boy wants to join the girl scouts, fine. If a man wants to join a women's only club, fine (although I'm hard pressed to even think of any clubs that are women's only).
