In recent years, MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) has been handing out rebate cheques because of a surplus of funds. This year my rebate cheque was just over $500... some got $800 back. Alcohol prices are ridiculous here. Just cuz some dude (god rest his soul) walked into a river over 10 years ago.

Try Edmonton.. or Alberta in general.. its one and a half the price of Winnipeg. Crazy.. but ya compared to USA.. its over double in some cases

Manitoba Liquor Control Commission controls the sale of liquor so liquor can only be bought from their outlets. Beer can be bought from the MLCC or authorized "vendors". I believe that recently changes were made to the law and wine may find its way into the grocery stores here in the future. I could be wrong on that however. You are correct. They will soon be selling booze at Safeways. I'm not sure about 7-11 though.

How much is the booze in Manitoba? I'm pretty sure around here in New Jersey a 6 pack is about $8-10. But kids here often overpay and overprice for it when dealing & buying it because for the buyers they want it really bad and for the sellers they know the buyers want it really bad and they take advantage of them.

I think a 6-pack goes for about $9 if I am not mistaken. A 24 of Bud goes for around $35

I love going to Happy Harry's in Grand Forks. I could buy that place out. You walk in and there's Handle's (Think that's what they call them) of Vodka for $9.99. In college all I drank was Natural Light. 12 pack for 7 bucks. Can't lose.

A handle is like 60oz. Alcohol is so cheap in Grand Forks. We don't even bother getting duty free anymore.

So if it's being sold at Safeway will it be even more overpriced like everything else in Safeway?

Hot in the summer, cold as blank in the winter. We have malls, theaters, big stores, and we're getting an IKEA here in a few years. However the North End is Winnipeg's answer to Stockton.

do you guys think this booze law is because of prohibition in usa causing crime in Mb back in the 20's ? Nope, just residue of the social stigma that the devil's drink carried back in the day. Liquor had to be controlled so that (and I'm not making this up) only white males could acquire it. It was almost like a compromise with the temperance crowd. Nowadays it's just an excuse to make big tax money off of a vice. Nice easy target. m.

Having travelled all over Canada and the world I can honestly say Winnipeg is one of the most under rated cities out there. People on here are correct the crime rate is way over senationalized. Winnipeg really isnt any safer or more dangerous then any city in Canada, simply put as long as you use common sense you'll be fine i.e dont go walking around an area with a bad rep at midnight with your wallet sticking out your pocket and your gonna be fine.
The weather here is a little rough especially in the winter but usually it only gets REALLY bad around January however with global warming the past 2 winters by comparison to the past havent been as bad. Summer time is usually preety great, and the fact that Winnipeg has hand fulls of beaches mostly within an hours drive doesnt hurt either.
If you ever visit here you should check out, the forks, the exchange district, and of course the jets!
We should remember this thread, DF always talked about the economic growth our NHL team would bring so in like 5 years it will be interesting to see the results. I cant wait.
