Pretty sure someone spoke to this two years ago Yup! That's exactly what I said to my girlfriend when we saw this on the news last night... OLD STORY! Darren Ford broke this one 2 years before the major media!

5,000 sq. ft. 2 poker 4 blackjack tables? Way to think small once again Winnipeg. I hope there's room and laws to allow for expansion. Why the scorn phillymike? It's not a real casino. It's a "gaming" bar. There are hundreds of similar places in Britain and the US that I'm aware of. BTW, puckshmuck, Tavern United will lose their allotment of VLTs.

I think they could make it more of a downtown destination piece. I didn't draw up the business plan, so truthfully I don't realize the full risk/reward potentials involved.

Next task... rip down Portage Place and make it a Las Vegas style hotel/casino.

They do not want to take away from the other Casino's in Winnipeg. If True North made to much money on this venture there would be a out cry that we are loosing tax revenue to a hockey team. This gives them a small but steady revue steam that helps support the team.

It's probably not the best thing for downtown (a true large casino would do more than a mini one obviously) but it's the best thing for the Jets. And that's way more important! ;D

Pretty sure someone spoke to this two years ago Correct (as always....kudos to Jetsfan88)! Saw Jim Ludlow exit from the construction doors just the other day w/ a hard-hat on taking some "suits" on a tour...probably w/ the architects or the MLC people. If I recall, MLC committed a certain number of VLTs (ie. realocated from other venues that weren't as "profitable"), to help w/ the pseudo-funding of the return of the Jets. They were waiting for the previous lease holders' leases to expire (i.e. Ricki's, etc.). For those that haven't seen it, its on the 2nd floor of City Place between the food court and the skywalk leading to the level 300 entrance. I say, the more restaurants in the downtown area open for pre-game meals, the better b/c there's at least 30-40 min waits at all the current places....fastest (& cheapest) place to have a meal is in the food court (albeit, the food isn't always the best). Plus, I'm still hunting for the best place to watch an AWAY game....haven't found a permanent place other than my own living room.

The Crystal Casino was the first permanent government-owned casino in the Western Hemisphere.[1] It opened in 1990 on the seventh floor of Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was run by the Manitoba Lottery Foundation. Two new gaming centers, the McPhillips Street Station and the Regent Station, were opened in 1993 to replace Crystal's bingo halls. It was closed on May 22, 1997, with the two other Winnipeg casinos absorbing its operations. It opened Dec 29, 1989. 1.bp.blogspot.com/-7JAS-0aC0J4/Tu6d_YUnniI/AAAAAAAAHCo/qlp78W7SQ_I/s320/Crystal%2BCasino.bmpIt was a flop back then for various reason! The Downtown Casino thing has gone the way of the do-do bird! Although, this Casino, owned by the Jets (anything w/ the Jets logo makes money these days), will be a success. Plus, it'll be a lot less formal attire than the old Crystal.

I'm not saying a casina is what downtown needs necessarily, but IF a mini casino would work, a bigger one would have to do more for downtown. Too young to have been at Crystal, but the 2 casino's in town have a fairly steady amount of foot traffic. I can't see how one would not help downtown. Having said that, I'm glad to see the start of what will hopefully be a cool sports/gaming lounge with kickbacks to keep the Jets here forever!

I was just adding some historical info to the history of downtown Casino's in the Winnipeg area. Almost like a walk down memory lane....we used to sneak up to the Casino when we were at a wedding reception in the old Fort garry...and pretend like we were high-rollers....LOL!! The chicks were hot!! That's about it! Question out to anyone who may have some insider information on this (i.e. JetsFan88?): Is this Casino/Lounge going to replace the "Shark Club" idea? or is that still planned and on its way?

I would imagine Tavern can re-apply for more VLT's for themselves. Heard some whining about these VLT's being taken from other businesses. Well thats how it works. There are no new VLT's. Low performing machines are moved to new locations.

Pretty sure someone spoke to this two years ago I do remember info about a TN casino coinciding with a temporary meter reading of 100%. I remember the same thing, and also the Shark Club

I can't stand the people crying online about this. But what about the poor gambling addicts. Give me a break. Some people are alcoholics too so I guess we should ban bars from the city. This is great and something that is long overdue for downtown. A shame its so small. But its a good start and will be good for True North. The comments on the Freep site are for the most part uneducated. Its sad that anytime something is being done to improve downtown the same old fix the road crowd comes out. I think this is ideal for the SHED, coupled with the expansion of the convention centre, at least two new hotels if not more in the SHED. Think of all the extra people that can walk from the CC indoors to Cityplace that may use this gaming room, or the Shark Club, Tavern, or go to the refurbished Met finally some things happening again down town

The Freep story said it was going to be attached to a sports bar, so there will be a true sports bar to go with the casino.
