What a gong show! Lame duck team next season. Kinda reminds of when Edmonton's farm team was stationed in Toronto of all places (Toronto Road Runners).

Isn't Houston one of the most financially successful teams in the AHL?

#NHLJets:
The Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Eagles mutually make the decision to end their ECHL affiliation.
Jets will have a new affiliate next season.

With only one franchise out in the Hockey crazy west you would think league officials would be trying like hell to get 3 or 4 teams to move there. There's a lot of potential sites of both sides of the border: Regina, Saskatoon, Red Deer, Victoria, Spokane, Tacoma, Boise, Billings, Portland, Fargo and Sioux Falls. Add Abbotsford and that's 12. Surely of those 12 you could find 4? (Sorry Fort Mac not quite enough)

Boise has ECHL
Regina, Sask, RD, Vic, Spokane, Portland all have WHL
Tacoma has no suitable arena
Billings is rebuilding their arena after it got smacked by a tornado

To grow the league you would purposefully target WHL cities precisely for the fact that they're proven hockey markets. Boise would benefit from a move "up" to the AHL

You also have to consider the AHL is a bus league. Other than Abbotsford and St. John's, there's usually two or three teams in a vicinity. The more isolated places such as the aformentioned Heat, IceCaps, and the Texas teams pay for the other teams' air travel if memory serves.

You hit it dead on with the travel issue being a major roadblock. To make it viable you would need at least 6 teams in the northwest. The schedule would have to be altered to have more divisional games, closer rivalries, and less cross conference games. Costs would rise but the increased exposure and stature may make for conditions to cover those costs and maybe more. Not the most relevant example but the CFL lives in the shadow of the NFL but still thrives as a nation wide league. Having the AHL move to a national instead of regional profile could make it work.

Fort Mac at the least should look to get an AHL team, its not like there's anything else to do in the city but drink. Will not happen. Fort McMurray has less than 80,000 residents, and the 35,000 camp workers in the area want to get the hell out of the region on their days off. Maybe a WHL team would work there.

I lived in Saskatchewan for 9 years. I can tell you there is no interest in replacing the WHL with the AHL. None, Zero. Zilch. Nada. That's one of those things that keeps coming up in media outside the Province that makes no sense to people inside the Province.

Actually, they started loving it in 1992 when they figured out how to use it... m.
